First sign - spotted during a walk around near Golconda Fort. What caught my attention was the variety of typefaces and seeing a store with only a single type of product for sale.

Second sign - a sports store that sells laboratory equipment? Definitely a callback from a different time.

Third sign - just in case you didn’t know that this shop did DTP, they made sure they have it painted in enough spots.

Fourth sign - the fact that this board features four languages truly showcases the multicultural nature of our city. 2025-08-28 18:58:30 First sign - spotted du.. 83 -97% 0 -100%
The first sign in this carousel particularly piqued my interest. With the dual painted signs, the archway & pillar framing the lower sign, and the vibrant yellow colour against the blue door - it is one of most striking signs of the entire series.

The second sign with its weather worn texture and multiple languages along with the choice of wording for the English sign subtitle - oculist - really betrays its age.

The third sign with the multiple quirky fonts and illustrations is quite detailed but the subtle colours make it easy to miss when walking past. However, I noticed it in my hunt for signs, in Secunderabad. 2025-08-24 20:00:09 The first sign in this ca.. 194 -92% 0 -100%
I spent a lot of time exploring Hyderabad to hunt down hand painted signs. They are dying breed, in this world of LED signs, and printed flex boards.

Majority of these were in the older parts of the city, and mainly for older establishments. I found the choice of typography, colour, placement of text, all quite beautiful in their own unique way.

I made the conscious choice to remove the backgrounds digitally since the locations tend to be rather cluttered, and often have other boards in the way. By applying a uniform colour to the backdrop, I was able to isolate each sign and draw the viewers attention to the nuances of each sign. 2025-08-23 12:49:56 I spent a lot of time exp.. 116 -95% 1 -93%

Let’s paint the town red.

Photographing jeevankumar.a was great experience. I know he looks menacing at the outset but he’s an absolute laugh and great person to spend time with. He was ready to experiment with the photos, and also great host - feeding us all with super food too!

Contd 2/2.

Prana made a few wedding films, some corporate videos, and we got busy with lots of different kind of video work. But it was not in the direction of feature films. I wanted to make Cinema, so I stopped. It was a hard decision to stop doing work that was making money. People told me to work on a feature film parallelly, but I felt that if I don't jump fully into it, I won't be able to give it my best.

Somewhere in 2012, during Prana days, I had met Priyanka. We initially worked together on an Ad film and then went on to work on a few more projects. We had a great sync. We made a short film called ‘Yaadon ki baraat’, which went to Cannes, and gave us the confidence that we could pull off something really good.

The Prana gang came together for Yevade with Priyanka and Swapna. We made that film with all heart and it in turn launched a lot of careers.

I had always wanted to tell the story of Savitri garu, being a fan of her from a young age. I came across her books, and realized there is so much more to her story that nobody really knew about. It was a leap to make ‘Mahanati’ as my 2nd film. Honestly, I had zero idea if it was even going to break even. The producers took a huge risk, since there is normally not a culture of biopic in India. And ours was a tragedy, but it somehow came together really well. I think the audience knew that we had no ulterior motives and were honest about what we wanted to do. More than the satisfaction of making the film, it was a big relief that people felt we did justice to her story.

Right now, I just wrapped up a short film for Netflix, in 5 days, bang in the middle of the pandemic. Currently, producing a comedy film with Anudeep, whose short film really brought us many laughs in the earlier days.

Next year, I am doing a Prabhas film. I wrote down the gist of it and am slowly starting to unwrap the finer details. It's a huge project and feels impossible in its own way. It's a film that I wanted to watch as a kid with fun, good imaginative action.

When I was in Manipal, the idea to make a film and release it in a theatre was a distant dream. Now that it has come real, I want to better myself every time.

I took this photo of Nagi, back in Oct 2020. We spent a quiet afternoon, chatting about our school HPS Begumpet, and his passion for films. The below caption is written as per our discussion back then. It is quite interesting to re-read this text, 5 years later.

Caption 1/2 -
When I was younger, I wanted to become a businessman. I started an unofficial magazine when I was in school at HPS Begumpet and sold it for Rs.20. I also started a lending library and gave out books in free periods but eventually got caught by teachers. Finally in 12th, I was made the editor for the school newsletter and I discovered I enjoyed writing more than anything else.

I didn't want to do medicine or engineering, and wrote all sorts of entrance exams. I got into Manipal Institute of Mass Communication and thought I'll become a journalist. In the video course, they gave us a camera and told us to go shoot and make a story. I liked editing and made a video year book of my batch which everyone loved. At this point, I came to the conclusion that I should become a filmmaker.

Then I got into advertising, but soon realised that it wasn't my thing to sell random products. I left that after 6 months and needed some pocket money. So I ended up working in an Amazon Email customer service. I enjoyed being able to give out 20 dollar coupons to people who had issues with their orders.

Amritha Chandra Mam.

An absolute stalwart at what she does, and it’s so good to see her still at school, running the place in her role as the Vice Principal!

My first interaction with her was when I was the editor for the school newsletter. I recall her attention to detail and meticulousness in ensuring that everything was double checked and always above board. I think those little behavioural traits are imprinted in us as students and play a role in the way that we work today as adults.

It’s a great experience to continue working with her today, and still see her practical decision making process prove successful! 2025-06-09 13:11:33 Amritha Chandra Mam. .. 952 -63% 9 -38%

Our Art Teacher Geetha Mam.

She sowed the seeds of creativity when we were young and I continued to stay in touch with her over the years since she’s the mother of my friend tharunbhascker. Being Marredpally boys, we used to spend time at each other’s places often and Geetha Mam was always supportive of our creative endeavours, even as we grew older and were perhaps expected by the wider world to pursue regular careers.

Needless to say, I am glad our school provided us with an environment where we could spend time in experimenting with extra curricular activities, as well as teachers who supported and allowed us to think freely.

And the best part of meeting her was that she cooked a fabulous authentic school food for us - right from the bread and sambar, to the aloo cutlets and chicken curry, and bagara rice and coconut burfi !

Reconnecting, reminiscing, and spending time with my childhood class teacher Durga Mam, was such a blessing!

I was particularly moved by her answer when I asked the question “what do you miss the most from school?”, and she replied without a second thought “everything”.

Durga Mam was my class teacher in 5th class - that’s more than 25 years ago.

But her memory of her students, our individual personality traits, and all the things that we got upto in class; remains as sharp as ever.

As class teacher, she was responsible for teaching us all the subjects - but she added her own twist to each subject to ensure we actually learnt the meaning of the lessons, and didn’t just memorise the words. For Math, she held a makeshift shop in class to help us understand how numbers translate into real life situations. For Geography, she took us on imaginary world tours to help us understood the vastness of the globe. And so on.

Her passion for her students and a sense of duty to inculcate strong learning foundations undoubtedly helped everyone of who were in her class.

Our Art teacher, Subhash Babu Sir was instrumental in making several art installations that are still standing strong across the school today. The sculpture of the three sports players in the backfield, the sculpture of the thinking boy in the frontfield, the exquisite abstract sand casted art patterns in front of the art room, and a large Ajanta painting in the boardroom - all of these were personally done by Mr.Subhash Babu with an intention to beautify the school premises.

I personally remember him very well because there was a summer art camp once, sometime in the early 2000s, where I was the only student who had signed up. I turned up on the scheduled date to the art room and Mr.Subhash Babu asked me “are you the only student?”. I turned and looked around at an empty classroom and replied “yes”. I half expected him to cancel the art camp but he wasn’t deterred. He nthusiastically spent an entire month teaching me several interesting art techniques and mentoring me on a one-to-one basis. His passion for art went far beyond what most of us were able to comprehend and its amazing to see him still making new paintings today.

I was nervous before I met Emmanuel Sir. It had been a long time and needless to say, memories from school were still fresh in my mind, even though it’s been a couple of decades.

But he welcomed me with a big smile and so much warmth, all those nerves instantly melted away. We sat together for a good amount of time, went through the school centenary coffee table book, and it was great to see him fondly recall all his achievements and landmarks from school.

Emmanuel Sir was always the tough one at school. Our Physical Education teacher - he was strict, he expected punctuality, and didn’t accept any nonsense.

Needless to say, all of us were dead scared of him. The sound of his motorbike used to keep us on our toes, the sight of him walking towards you from a distance used to makes your knees shake, and every interaction, however brief, was very calculated to ensure we didn’t accidentally say the wrong thing.

After I passed out of school, I only had the opportunity for very quick interactions with him at some events but being able to sit down with him, talk at length, and laughing together is something I would have never dreamt of. Incredibly grateful to my profession that allows me to reconnect with my teachers, and create a timeless memory.

Dr.A.K.Prabhakar - my Class Teacher at the Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet in 6th & 7th class.

5 years ago, I took it upon myself to make great portraits of my teachers so I went to school and took photos of a few teachers. However, that series came to a rapid halt upon the start of the pandemic, and like many things in life, it slowly fizzled out. Recently, I thought I should start it again and reconnected with my old teachers, many of whom had retired by now.

It was super nostalgic to visit the houses of my teachers, meeting them after a decade or two, and reminisce about all the good days at school.

Prabhakar Sir was a meticulous and sharp class teacher - and constantly kept us engaged with his jokes and interesting little nuggets of information. He played a pivotal role in our lives during those formative years, and ensured that our minds were pushed in the right direction. Meeting him after such a long time made me feel like a young student again, transported back in time to the days of simple joys.
