Fantastic new addition icavallinibk from the fourhorsemenbk team located right across the street has been open for the last month and a half or so. It’s great. And nickcurtola’s bright, simple (but also genius 🤯) and product driven cooking with an Italian bend (plus possibly the best pastas in nyc- or at least the best I’ve had in a long time; and a tribute to what must have been inspired by evanfunke’s iconic “focaccia” at Felix in LA) carries over perfectly. It’s a more restaurant-y 4H (bigger + a full cocktail program! lots of bitters-based drinks), but just as hard to get in! Slated to open on Sept 10 comes the Sushi Ichimura reconcept, now restaurantmuku.nyc—a 10-seat, kaiseki-inspired restaurant helmed by Ichimura’s very talented right hand, Manabu Asanuma. Within a new dark wood–paneled dining room, Asanuma will present a 10-course omakase ($295) showcasing peak seasonal ingredients in preparations that range from raw to grilled, simmered, steamed, and fried. Highlights include a delicious foie gras chawanmushi (egg custard) with gingko nut sauce, and this a5 wagyu nabe. 🔥

I can’t believe we’re nearing 🍁fall. And while I am excited about apple picking, pumpkin carving, and all the Halloween festivities, it’s hard to say goodbye to summer and all the beautiful ingredients it produces. So in tribute to these final warm days, I stopped by FreshDirect’s Southampton shop (I also scored some items online) to stock up on the summer’s bounty while I still can. The store sources from local Long Island farms, and I picked up alllllll the heirloom tomatoes, peaches, melons (PSA: this is not in my video but the melons that FreshDirect is currently selling areas sweet and juicy as the $150 Japanese melsons I’ve purchased in the past!!), corn, purple cauliflower and much much more. 

The final menu:

Here’s a tribute to my Czech grandmother - the person who taught me to love food, in particular baking. My grandmother lived in Prague, but would visit my family annually for several months around the holidays. I would be in the kitchen with her baking, every single day. She made many Czech pastries, including  koláče, which she often topped with a fresh white cheese called farmer’s cheese. 
In the recipe below, I put a summery spin on this traditional pastry using ultra-sweet peak-season berries and stone fruit from FreshDirect, along with Isigny Sainte-Mère butter (high-quality butter makes all the difference!), A2 milk, and more.

This is the cake of all cakes! Rich and flakey with a meringue-like top and gooey center - this gooey ghee cake is enriched with a generous dose of cultured ghee from TwoBrothersOrganicFarms.

I’m love restaurants that specialize in one thing, which is why I had to check out dubuhaus.nyc, a new house-made tofu spot in Ktown from the same team behind howoo.nyc (awesome spot, I highly recommend), a premium Korean BBQ place I also recently tried and loved. The space is clean, minimalist, and softly glowing. The star here is tofu, made in-house from non-GMO soybeans grown from seeds sourced in South Korea, and it shows up in everything from dumplings to stews. Another standout is the makgeolli, a traditional Korean rice wine that’s cloudy and lightly fizzy; here it’s frozen into a slushy and blended with flavors like white peach or chestnut. The most underground Italian spot in NYC?
I almost don’t want to tell you about Lucciola, which is hiding in plain sight. 
It has just 18 seats. No menu (ok there are different menu options, no menu is one of the choices- go for the pasta!). No wine by the glass. No walk-in fridge. And 80% of the guests? Regulars.
📍 Tucked away on the Upper West Side, Lucciola feels like a secret passed down in whispers (it’s been open for five years, have you heard of it?). The Consul General of NY’s Italian Consulate told my cousin it’s the best pasta restaurant in New York. That’s all I needed to hear.
I drove from Brooklyn, not knowing what to expect. What I found? 
A tiny jewel box of a restaurant—wine lining every wall, a kitchen barely big enough to stand in.
🍝  michelecasadeimassari calls the shots each morning—building the day’s menu around what’s freshest. It’s modern, rustic, deeply Bolognese... and totally unforgettable.
This is the kind of place that reminds you why you fell in love with restaurants in the first place. Intimate, ingredient-obsessed.

Everything is an ACE at newbie kiko.newyork, a totally under the radar, mostly Japanese (and mildly Thai-ish) modern bistro that couldn’t be more chic. New York City offers a ton of matcha cafes - most of which rely on low quality brown-toned matcha powders. In addition to kettl and teadealers, here’s a new one that I will actually drink at: 12.matcha –– a stunning new cafe bi-level cafe on Bond Street (the space you seen in the video is their lower level tasting counter which will eventually be open for public booking). 12 Matcha aims to redefine the modern matcha experience via design and also talent. They’ve tapped former Modernist Cuisine chef Francisco Migoya + Dr. Christopher Loss from Cornell University’s Department of Food Science to help develop their flavors. Right now there are only two drinks on offer with more to come, including other green tea beverages like iced gyokuro.
