It’s been a while since I promised a life update… and what a whirlwind this past year has been. I met Dan mid last year, and life has been full — of love, joy, challenges, and change — all while juggling busy jobs. Social media had to take a back seat as we focused on what mattered most: family and each other. Breakfast drama in the wild! 🦜🦋 In the heart of Wilpattu National Park in Sri Lanka, we caught this vibrant bee-eater with its breakfast heist… the unsuspecting butterfly, alas, did not RSVP to this meal. Nature, as ever, is both beautiful and slightly savage. Most people never stop to appreciate the birds whilst on safari, charging around trying to find bigger animals - but there is so much beauty in these small moments that often go unnoticed. A lunar eclipse and the northern lights — one of nature’s rarest duets. Clouds over London only gave us a fleeting glimpse of last night’s partial lunar eclipse 🌙☁️ … but it reminded me of a night in Arctic Canada back in November 2022 that I’ll never forget. A full lunar eclipse unfolding beneath the northern lights — an impossibly rare sight, and worth every frozen minute! Neither the photo nor the words will ever do this moment justice. It might not look that dramatic, but the probabilty of the events being seen together is so low - which is what makes it so special. This first photo is a composite — it was nearly impossible to capture the aurora, foreground, and a zoomed-in moon all in one frame, so I blended a close-up of the moon with the landscape to show you what it truly looked like to our naked eye. The moon was massive to the eye. Photo 2 shows what a single exposure on the camera actually looked like - trying to fit it all in. Photo 3 is a close up of the moon during the lunar eclipse. I stood outside for over 3 hours in -32°C for these shots (turned into an icicle by the end 🥶 — see photo 4 for proof!). A Blood Moon over Tower Bridge in London Some call it luck, but moments like these take careful planning (and a lot of patience!). I’ve mapped out the moonrise over London five times now—four of those ended in cloudy flops. The perfect ending to our mini-moon in Iceland - the northern lights appeared whilst we were in the Sky Lagoon skylagooniceland and carried on with this incredible show that nignt! It is a great year to see the northern lights given the solar optimum - so if you're considering a winter holiday, I highly recommend heading to Iceland or somewhere in the arctic circle. I always get asked how to see them or photograph them, so here are some tips for viewing the aurora: - try to find a dark place like a field or park with less obstruction - allow your eyes to get used to the dark and you will see the lights better. 50 shades of Blue - an Iceland special!😉❄️🥶 A glacier hike is a must in Iceland —available year-round, along with ice climbing for the brave! But if you're visiting Iceland in winter, don’t miss the chance to step inside an ice cave (only accessible in the colder months). We had an incredible day on the glacier with glacieradventure Can you see spot the tiny humans on the glacier in slide 4, and any guesses to what our guide is upto in slide 6? guillermo_mimar And do you know why the ice so blue? 🩵 Snow fall on a glacier ends up getting compressed into ice. As it’s compressed into ice, all air bubbles are squeezed out and ice crystals enlarge, which makes the ice appear blue. Water is very good at absorbing light. Glacier ice is blue because the red (long wavelengths) part of white light is absorbed by ice and the blue (short wavelengths) light is transmitted and scattered. The longer the path light travels in ice, the more blue it appears. Iceland may be known for its unique geography and beautiful landscapes, but it is equally carving out a vibrant food and art scene. We made a quick stop in Reykjavik to check out this unique art installation called Chromo Sapiens at Höfuðstöðin. It is designed by an artist called Shoplifter shoplifterart , and is a multi-sensory, large-scale installation consisting of three caves made from synthetic hair extensions. We loved the art installation and spent a good 30 mins in there enjoying this sensory overload of colours. I highly recommend stopping off there if you're in reykjavik.
