Sad news from the world of elegance and fashion. Giorgio Armani has passed. Michelle Pfeiffer wrote a heartfelt remembrance for Mr. Armani on her social media, as these two incredibly talented people shared a deep friendship and artistic relationship. When I photographed Michelle with many elements of the United States gem collection, I proposed to her that I actually turn her into a jewelry display. She was immediately onboard with the idea and said, “Yes, and I can be wearing black Armani!” I had this case commissioned, and it was made of gilded wood and optically clear glass. Shot with an 8x10 Sinar camera at the Smithsonian. Shooting 8x10 on location is fascinating, rewarding thing to have done, given the lustrous quality of the final images. It has its difficulties, too! More of the story of this to come. But for now, just a fond remembrance of this shoot, and the elegant partnership between Giorgio Armani and Michelle Pfeiffer, two of the great talents of our time. 2025-09-06 18:57:58 Sad news from the wor.. 385 -77% 10 -81%
Elite athlete Lisa Chulich churns through the surf in Brooklyn. Early am, soft light. Shot with Nikon Z 9 and the newly updated and redefined NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II lens, which is a thing of beauty.

The AF grabbed Lisa’s face and eyes easily and tracked her approach.

Camera settings: ISO 640, 1/800, f5.
Lens racked out to 24mm. This is a storytelling lens. I worked with Lisa all day, detailing her amazing physicality, energy and determination. One lens, all day. I worked tight and close at 70mm (this new 24-70 focuses phenomenally close), wide for setting the scene, and mid-range for details.

It’s a necessary lens for covering life happening around us.

Hot slashing light, sweat and the city. This was shot in the blazing sun of early afternoon, underneath the Brooklyn elevated subway, where the steel girders and tracks make for hard, edgy, defined patches of light.

The light at this time of day is as loud and blaring as the screech of the overhead trains. Elite athlete lisa_chulich stands off with the camera, her amazing physical presence etched by the hard sun. The lens is the new NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II. The “II” is significant, as it is an updated version of a lens that has been with us for years, from film cameras, to early digital, to mirrorless.

But to refer to the adaptation of this venerable set of millimeters as an update would be a misnomer. It is a complete, sleek, and elegant overhaul. The focus is faster and hyper-accurate, the zoom is internal. It is lighter, smaller and focuses closer than any predecessor. A 24-70 has been a go-to staple lens for me for many years. It’s always on the job, always part of my kit.

And this new lens is a gift. It’s rugged, but light. I can attest to this as is I was sitting in the Brooklyn surf with it in the early am, dodging the occasional wave. (More on that at a later date!) The 24-70 has always been essential to my field pack. This new version makes it not just essential but it becomes indispensable.

As can happen on a summertime shoot, we started at 4:30am and went to 9pm that night. A sunrise to sunset shoot!

Thanks to Nikon, who continues to improve camera and lens tech beyond my wildest dreams and for an incredible assignment.

Celebrating World Photography Day!

A long and exciting road with a camera in hand, and that road continues to unwind into paths yet untaken and unknown.

The beauty and privilege of being a photographer is that you are often sent to photograph excellence, or uniqueness, or history unfolding, You can be dropped into circumstances you cannot control but must observe lucidly, with calm demeanor and absolute diligence at the camera.

The things you see will not come around again. There is pressure at the lens to do well, to not miss, to hang in there even when things go sideways. It’s a burden we readily accept because pictures have enduring power and inform and influence the lives of those who could not be there at that moment.

Pictures are the basis of our memory, the truth of our collective times, and our humanity. It’s been the mission of the camera since its invention to witness the world. The mission continues, and I remain thrilled and energized by all the possibilities yet to come.

In front of Huaca Pucllana, a pre-Columbian pyramid located, oddly, in the heart of one of the most modern districts of Lima, Peru, the amazing Fefa poses in ritual makeup, done by a talented Peruvian makeup artist, evoking the past. It was historically a place of rituals, and human sacrifice.

Shot with a NIKKOR 300mm, compressing the background, and rendering it as context. Flash assist at sunset, raw light.

Many thanks to La Casa Films and their stalwart crew for introducing me to Fefa, and doing superb production for us in Lima and the surrounding deserts. A great memory. Peru is magic!

For #mondaymotivation out of the gate with a bike shot! The bike is not moving, and the water is being thrown. Did this in Dubai, one of my all-time, favorite, strange places on earth.

The city looms up at the edge of the eternal desert, glass and steel, improbable and vast. Been there many times. This was a lighting demo during a workshop, Nikon Speedlights only, in front and in back of the bike, edging out the rider’s form with light, while the water does its thing. Fun, simple thing to do with light and a bike!

In Raleigh, NC this weekend for the 100th Anniversary gathering of the PPNC, the Professional Photographers of North Carolina. Wonderful event, great gathering of kindred photo spirits.

Raleigh is currently being seized by a heat wave, bringing daytime temps to about 100! Made me think of this youngster, photographed in Cookeville, Tennessee, at Cream City Ice Cream & Coffee, an emporium of wonderful, cooling delights. I think her contented expression says it all. All of us here in Raleigh are due for some ice cream!

At the workbench for #wednesdaywisdom. The background window is raw daylight, pouring through the window glass and a little smoke drift back there gives that sunlight shape and character.

The light for our subject at the desk is old school Nikon Speedlights, triggered line of sight. Three SB-910 units on a tri-flash, hitting a Manfrotto 3x3 diffuser. Instant soft light that has character and offers good detail for the subject and the work desk, but falls off naturally, and gradually.

This, for me, is a time honored approach. A face in a place. Environmental portraiture. The way you light a space like this offers clues to the life at hand, and actually entertains the eye of the viewer, letting them roam around a bit looking at details, and perhaps making some guesses as to what some of those details might be. Engagement, to use a word of our times. Spending more than one or two seconds, hopefully, with an image. Fun to create by using the light that’s available, and supplementing in a way that doesn’t squash the initial feel of the workplace.

The game of lighting ratios! What’s already there, and what do you supply that complements what you have found?

Closing time! I was assigned to make pictures that corresponded to lyrics of well known songs. “You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.” The singer in the bar, last set finished, packs up and heads into the lonely night, maybe to their car, to the motel, and some sleep, before pushing on the next day to a new gig, a different bar, a different city. I’ve always been interested in/fascinated by the itinerant life in pursuit of art, or excellence, or hope.

The gig life. Singers and songwriters, perhaps. Rodeo folks, shuttling here and there on the circuit. Minor league athletes, far from the lavish perks of “the show,” grinding it out on a bus, heading for another game, another town. The nomadic aspects of being an artist chasing a dream.

My lights in this pic are all outside, gelled blue, filtering through the haze I introduced near the door. Beer bottles strewn about, chairs upside down. A decidedly non-glamourous scene. Things to remember! Putting your lights on a public sidewalk can require a permit, and a crew member to watch them, depending on how busy the location is. This was shot in daylight, as I recall, pretty full sun outside. An array of profoto B10X Plus strobes altered the time of day and plunged the scene closer to late night and lonely.

Cool, late night tonalities. Banking on angle of incidence, angle of reflection highlights off the walls to render a bit of the details of the place, but also letting them settle into obscurity, providing an alleyway for the eye to go to the guitarist. Bullseye composition, which breaks the rules a bit. A fun memory of a shoot in Memphis, Tennessee.

Shot this in LA where the high hard sun can cut like a knife and your pixels scream for mercy and shade! But there is a time and place for hard, clean, angled light, unadorned, unbaffled, unshaped, bent or softened. Especially when you have a subject like dlimathais to work with!
Her beautifully angular looks make the most of the hard light, and the light returns the favor. We did this out on the porch of the studio owned by my friend Gianluca Bertone of bertonevisuals after having spent the whole day inside, crafting light with strobes. But, just outside the door - sunlight!

Fantastic makeup by clairepiao. Edgy, dark eyes match the look of the wardrobe. Hard gray wall offers no distraction. You can concentrate on just the face, the body language and that amazing freight train of light rushing at her. Shot with Nikon Z 7 and the NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct lens.

It’s not green and it’s not Daisy’s dock, but it sure is pretty. Pre-dawn scene on the lake. Summer is here. Early sunrises, late sunsets mean long days for a photographer to reach the nirvana of good light.

The blasting light of the middle daylight hours of summer is brutal indeed, and must be worked with, but the early and late light is smooth and forgiving and puts a glow on everything. Light….it transforms. Come out on this dock at noon, you don’t even bring your cameras, and chances are, you can’t wait to get back to shade, or the luxury of air conditioning. But the golden hours of this time of year, the race to make photos is desperate and fevered, as the light shifts moment to moment.

At sunrise you work quickly as the light is rapidly morphing into a monster. At sunset, working equally quick as light plunges to darkness. It is at the edges of the day that the advanced digital cameras we have are a fervent blessing. They actually see better than we do, and the chip finds colors our eyes are unaware of.

In film days, when the dusk grew heavy, it was over, time to pack up. Digital extends your time on location. It carves out color and detail. It often forgives your sins at camera. A beautiful thing! Like the light on the dock.

July 4th - the absolute, full-blown declaration that it is summer! Hot dogs and heat. Ball games and beach. Shot this in ’86 for the Statue of Liberty 100th Anniversary. I was on assignment for People Magazine, which in its day was a vital, resonant publication to work for as a photographer. What it lacked in depth of coverage it compensated for in the variety of coverage, and the ability to jump on the news, personalities and issues of the day in quick turnaround time.

Shot on Kodachrome 25! I doubted my memory, so I went into my film archive and used scissors to cut the slide mount. And there it was. PKM 5034. Beautiful film with utterly no forgiveness.

Important tip for fireworks. Scout. Get there early. I mean early. We built a scaffold on the NJ dock and roped off our location. Poor Gabe Palacio, a wonderful photographer, was my assistant on this and between the two of us we roughly spent all night on the dock the night before the actual celebration event. Us and the rats. It was a big deal, this celebration in 1986. The Statue is the anchor for the whole photograph, in terms of both exposure and subject matter.

Stay safe everyone!

Summer. The colors, the heat, time by the water. Or in the water. I once described Deidre Dean as a “one woman Cirque du Soleil,” in reference to her endlessly creative posing and willingness to take risks in front of the lens.

One light pic, at sunset, in the chilly waters of Abiquiu Lake, New Mexico. She was always undaunted by the conditions of the location, and she was fearless in terms of expressing herself in front of the camera. Wonderful qualities to get in sync with when, as a photographer, you are imagining your way into a photo, and unsure of where or when that photo might come about!

Being on location is not like solving a math problem, which has a relative degree of certainty of outcome. It’s more like the game Jenga. Pull the wrong block, make the wrong move, choose an angle badly, don’t bring the right light, don’t have that spare battery, get to location late, talent doesn’t show up, authorities interfere…..and it all falls or crumbles.

Ahh, the uncertainty of the photographic endeavor. Which is one reason I always relied on Deidre, who I photographed many, many times. I knew she would always bring her game, and that was one worry off my mind. Given that certainty, I could then go on to worry about other stuff, like my own inadequacies at the camera. The creative life. Always fraught, always anxious, always wondering if anything will ever be good enough. And I wouldn’t have it any other way!

We’re breaking out of the blocks for summer, and the upcoming holiday weekend is gettin’ big in the windshield. At every Olympics there is a story that dominates, and in Rio, the story was, relentlessly, Usain Bolt. He spun the news cycle with the bigness of his speed, talent, size and ebullient personality.

Bolt was a star in every way imaginable. Hence, Sports Illustrated assigned like, seven of us to cover aspects of his 100 meter race. My responsibility was the start, which seems easy enough at first glance. However, it ain’t, especially for someone like me, who does not shoot track and field on a regular basis.

I remember thinking I was going to throw up in the stands prior to the race, ‘cause if SI didn’t have the start, the whole team effort would be damaged. I had shot and studied Bolt in his prelim heats, and, being bigger than the other sprinters, he broke late out of the blocks.

The smaller runners, like the American Justin Gatlin, were quicker at the start. Hence the problem with camera mechanics. I was shooting a Nikon D5 with a 200-400mm lens, and the AF on a D5 is astonishingly good. But, if Bolt got swallowed up by the other runners on either side of his lane, there was a substantial chance the AF of the camera would seek a foreground runner in a split second. No givebacks or do-overs, so I really couldn’t take that chance.

I sat there and watched Bolt practice and practice, warming up. He would break and I’d be on him with the AF active time and again. Got used to his rhythm and moves, and on the last practice break, I drew focus and shut off AF. Put a little stitch of gaffer tape on my zoom throw, just to make sure I didn’t bump it. All AF shut down, both at lens and camera. I sat there, keyed up and teed up, waiting for the gun. Boom. Sure enough, he was behind everyone out of the gate, but there was gold at the end for him. Seeing him run was like watching an airplane take off, going faster and faster down the runway. Gatlin led for most of the race, but Bolt overtook him in the last few meters.

Usain Bolt is an amazing athlete. It was a gift to witness his prowess.

A favorite pic for #musicmonday, and now that summer is in full swing, a fun summertime memory of shooting outdoors in fields down in Cookeville, TN. Some of the tallest sunflowers I’d ever seen!

The ever-talented country rocker Stephanie Quayle posed amidst the sunflowers, and with a big, soft light source. Stephanie now has her own label, Big Sky Music Group. She’s a musician, an author and a podcaster.

Made this portrait a few years back with Nikon Speedlights. Grateful for a patient subject and a great crew as I did battle with the fierce sun equipped with small flashes.

The bhphoto BILD Expo 2025! Nonstop buzz and excitement for two days at the Javits Center in NYC. Actually more days than that as the photo faithful gathered early to enjoy community, news, food, wine, energy, teaching and sharing.

There was gear galore, of course, and seminars, workshops, panel discussions covering many genres and interests, but the thing I remember most about it now was really the congenial feel of the whole event.

A big-time photo show is back in NYC! Time for all to be up close and personal, talking about this thing we do and that we love so dearly. I saw so many faces, near and dear, from the past, from mutual classes and workshops. I did a couple of demos, one at the nikonusa booth and one at the bhphoto lighting stage that were wonderfully raucous and fun, and, honestly, jam packed. (Thank you to all who came!)

Wonderful to spend some time with fellow Nikon Ambassadors, and listen in on their talks, absorbing voluminous wisdom and energy.

Thrilled to have been able to accomplish a long held goal: Make a portrait of the legendary Cliff Hausner of profoto and celebrate our long history and dear friendship. It’s the thing we can give as photographers. Anyone can send a gift card. But a well crafted, personal photo session is more like a love letter, a way of honoring friendship and the long road traveled. It was wonderful also to see so many new photographers, videographers, content creators of all kind who are bringing such energy to this field, and who are pursuing knowledge of craft with passion and diligence, and letting the siren call of likes stay in the background. And selfies galore!

Great to see life and joy, and folks together again to celebrate the importance of supporting creative endeavors.

The NEW Profoto B20 & B30 in the studio! Profoto hits keep coming…very exciting. Just worked with the new B20 and B30 at a terrific local studio - space67studios. The lights are of predictable Profoto quality, but there are significant upgrades.

The B20 and B30 are updates and replacements for the B10X and B10X Plus, and similarly rated. B20 is 250ws, and B30 is 500ws. And B20 and B30 is sure easier to type than B10X and B10X Plus! 😉 The rubberized exterior is an excellent evolution for handling and durability, especially if you throw these lights into the hold of an airplane on a regular basis. And…a hard wire sync port! Faster charging, bi-color LED, user-replaceable flash tube, 11 stop range, lots of ramp ups👍🏻

Our dancer was the formidable aballeticenigma, aka, Carlee Beth Wood. She is a wonderful, rangy, eloquent presence in front of the lens.

The flying silk scenarios were shot on a Nikon Z 9 with the 35mm f/1.4 lens at f4.0 at 1/5th of a second.
The darkened studio let the fast flashes freeze the motion of Carlee’s upper body, while the rest of the scene is governed with small continuous light sources.

The background is a Profoto B20 firing through a couple of cookies (cuculoris) to make some shadow play. Specs for the shots with the Wings: Nikon Z 9, 70-200mm lens at 1/250 f4.

Charging into the weekend! Energy for the heat of summer, now upon us. These amazing obstacle endurance athletes, photographed some time ago, have the grit, the guts and the endurance we all aspire to! This was shot with the Nikon D850, an amazing camera, and certainly a revelation when it debuted.

Big production! Not every day you get to light up (safely, under supervision) a massive bonfire and have athletes charging at you in a muddy trench. The heavy lifting, light-wise, was done with Profoto flash, with the main light being a boomed, overhead beauty dish.

All the trees in the background are also lit up, lest they go way dark and the photo loses a sense of place. In the mid-range area of the photo, the runners literally ran through a gauntlet of Nikon Speedlights on either side, giving the athletes a rim light and some depth and texture. In a lineup like this, every athlete has their own look of determination, and striving, so you don’t want to just light up the lead runner.

The obstacle course we worked at, courtesy of wonderful production by northorchard was a great place and they were able to divert pond water into this gully and flood it to make drama and mud. And, speaking of the muddy athletes, they were all styled by samanthabrownstyle, who we usually call on to make people look polished and elegant - so this was a bit of a twist!

All shot in one day. The powerful athletes charged the camera at least 20-30 times in the early part of the day, then posed for portraits in the late light. Great memory and a great day in the field.

Very fun BTS from the obstacle course on our YouTube channel shot by the intrepid and super talented t.omasino

When you move them close and work like this the light, even from a smaller source, can be easy going and soft, draping easily on your subject’s face. I made this picture years ago, when I was assigned to find and photograph individuals who had been the subject of a Pulitzer Prize photograph. Pictured here is “The Napalm Girl,” Kim Phuc, nursing her baby Thomas. She was horribly burned during the Vietnam War, and photographed by Nick Ut as she ran in agony away from her village. The photograph effectively changed American attitudes towards the war and became one of the most notable images of that or any other time. Doing that Pulitzer story and meeting Kim impressed upon me all over again how powerful pictures are, and how they can indelibly affect people’s lives. Kim’s life in many ways has spun on that fraction of a second Nick captured many years ago. She survived her burns and went on to dedicate her life to speaking of peace and reconciliation amongst the people of the earth. She and Nick remain friends to this day. Nick, for his part, has always been a stalwart member of the photo community. His life, his pictures and his story are a wonderful enrichment and lesson to us all. Together, Kim and Nick have lifted us all up, and have turned a tragedy on its head into a positive lesson for the world.

It is a shame that all these years later, doubt is being cast on the veracity of Nick’s authorship of that photograph. It’s even more disturbing that an organization such as the World Press is listening to those doubts, and has “suspended” Nick’s credit for making the photo. Powerful, rational and experienced voices such as David Burnett, Yunghi Kim, and Jim Colton have spoken in defense of Nick’s authorship of this photo. They should be listened to. 2025-05-25 12:22:11 I mad.. 4,361 +161% 76 +46%
Kat and Wayne, partners on stage and in life, two marvelous athletes and performers, are now in the process of closing a chapter in Las Vegas.

Between the two of them they have been onstage as a mainstay, a beautifully acrobatic, sensual hand to hand act for some 16 or so years. Their presence has graced two shows, Zumanity and Absinthe, and thousands have been awestruck at their virtuoso athleticism and stage presence. I have been privileged to work with them on a number of occasions, and they have always captivated the camera. They can create seemingly impossible human architecture, reflecting superhuman strength and agility, thanks to thousands and thousands of hours of practice.

May is a time of year for horse racing. The Kentucky Derby is happening today May 3, and I have lots of friends at Churchill Downs covering it. I was only able to witness the race of races once, and I was enthralled. Though, me being me, I have to admit I was just as fascinated by the human behavior in the stands as I was the equine excellence out on the track. Storytelling!

Color, tradition, finery and the art of hat making are on bold display. Yes, the milliners work overtime getting these hats in order for the big races! Some are wonderful, some are monstrous, but all are fun to photograph. Being there was a very cool thing, and harked me back to my early wire service days, covering races like the Belmont.
