  • I made this picture years ago, when I was assigned to find and photograph individuals who had been the subject of a Pulitzer Prize photograph. Pictured here is “The Napalm Girl,” Kim Phuc, nursing her baby Thomas. She was horribly burned during the Vietnam War, and photographed by Nick Ut as she ran in agony away from her village. The photograph effectively changed American attitudes towards the war and became one of the most notable images of that or any other time. Doing that Pulitzer story and meeting Kim impressed upon me all over again how powerful pictures are, and how they can indelibly affect people’s lives. Kim’s life in many ways has spun on that fraction of a second Nick captured many years ago. She survived her burns and went on to dedicate her life to speaking of peace and reconciliation amongst the people of the earth. She and Nick remain friends to this day. Nick, for his part, has always been a stalwart member of the photo community. His life, his pictures and his story are a wonderful enrichment and lesson to us all. Together, Kim and Nick have lifted us all up, and have turned a tragedy on its head into a positive lesson for the world. It is a shame that all these years later, doubt is being cast on the veracity of Nick’s authorship of that photograph. It’s even more disturbing that an organization such as the World Press is listening to those doubts, and has “suspended” Nick’s credit for making the photo. Powerful, rational and experienced voices such as David Burnett, Yunghi Kim, and Jim Colton have spoken in defense of Nick’s authorship of this photo. They should be listened to.
  • A favorite shot from a lonely highway. Francesca strikes a lively note in an otherwise desolate landscape (which by the way deserted landscapes are among my favorite places to shoot!) Super simple lighting. One shoot-thru umbrella- big, soft, easy light. Lovely for our talent and easy to manage at camera because that kind of soft flash light blends easily with light that already exists. Spring colors and fashion! #throwbackthursday #thursdaythoughts #nikonambassador #nikonpro # nikond810 #nikon200mm fvilogron nikonusa #fashionphotography lacasa_films
  • Charging into the weekend! Energy for the heat of summer, now upon us. These amazing obstacle endurance athletes, photographed some time ago, have the grit, the guts and the endurance we all aspire to! This was shot with the Nikon D850, an amazing camera, and certainly a revelation when it debuted. Big production! Not every day you get to light up (safely, under supervision) a massive bonfire and have athletes charging at you in a muddy trench. The heavy lifting, light-wise, was done with Profoto flash, with the main light being a boomed, overhead beauty dish. All the trees in the background are also lit up, lest they go way dark and the photo loses a sense of place. In the mid-range area of the photo, the runners literally ran through a gauntlet of Nikon Speedlights on either side, giving the athletes a rim light and some depth and texture. In a lineup like this, every athlete has their own look of determination, and striving, so you don’t want to just light up the lead runner. The obstacle course we worked at, courtesy of wonderful production by northorchard was a great place and they were able to divert pond water into this gully and flood it to make drama and mud. And, speaking of the muddy athletes, they were all styled by samanthabrownstyle, who we usually call on to make people look polished and elegant - so this was a bit of a twist! All shot in one day. The powerful athletes charged the camera at least 20-30 times in the early part of the day, then posed for portraits in the late light. Great memory and a great day in the field. Very fun BTS from the obstacle course on our YouTube channel shot by the intrepid and super talented t.omasino ➡️https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTv8wtQ4ZNk #FlashbackFriday #FridayFeeling #FitnessFriday #picoftheday #sportsphotography #nikkor200_400mm #enduranceathletes #NikonAmbassador NikonUSA #NikonPro #NikonD850
