In other news, I’m battling Tokyo’s spittin’ Brit stoaties in one of the biggest nights in the history of English comedy in Tokyo... I mean look at that list of comedians that’s not me and the list of networks I’ve never been featured on! The Tokyo International Comedy Festival is coming up, bigger than last year. People in the Tokyo scene, especially the TCB staff are all running around, exhausted, stressed, but we’re hoping this pays off. ################## To get a lil nostalgic — some years back I was a Japanese college student in Tokyo religiously listening to Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, finally feeling like I found what I want to do with my life… while also dreading the fact that I’m from a country where performing English comedy should surely be a pipe dream. Now I get to be part of a comedy festival, performing stand-up, roast battles, improv, sharing the stage with top comedians in the span of 2 weeks! This could be the start of a new international comedy hub in Asia, and anyone could help it happen! Back in September 2024, I was a rookie comic making his roast debut, stripping in front of comedy greats like Pat Barker, Keith Carey, and Kim Congdon. I was hopeful of what would come in the future. One cold Tokyo spring day, I got off an old rusty commuter train that smelled like sadness and leftover salarymen musk, walked past a run-down snack bar whose name was a terrible pun on “Evangelion”, buzzed the entrance of what looked like a secret spy base. A raspy, vibrant voice welcomed me through the speakerphone as the heavy metallic door unlocked with a clang. I went through the entrance to ride an old elevator with a rectangular window on the door, like the thing that was in “The Grudge”. You know, the one where the lady gets on, and it goes up, but the ghost boy is looking through the window? Did you watch “The Grudge”? I didn’t. I couldn’t sleep alone for 8 months after I watched “The Ring”. Anyways, I was welcomed by a tall, blonde lady to a room filled with things way too artistic for my writing skills. There were plants. Weird ‘80s music that went bleep bloop. Pictures. She took photos of me while laughing hysterically. She laughed harder when I danced so I danced around a lot. She gave me some tea as well. It tasted good. About an hour and a half later, I got pooped back onto a weird Tokyo neighborhood and had some Chinese food. It was great, but I shouldn’t have ordered rice on top of noodles. And after all of that, alextthomas gave me these professional headshots!
