- I'm going for my MA in Theology at loyolamarymount starting this fall! My relationship to LMU goes all the way back to 2011, hearing about this graduate program, meeting my Jesuit spiritual director, and joining a CLC group of LMU alumni as the rogue non-alum ("she doesn't even go here!"). And it seems fitting even after all these years and time spent on this campus that I'll finally be a student there! Proud to become a Lion! (Still also always a Reedie too reedcollege.) I received my acceptance letter on Apr 24 (a date of significance for me, refer to my song "Sighing Dove") and figured May 1, May Day and the first day of Mary's month, would be a good day to share the news, along with a few beautiful Marys on LMU's campus. The last photo is from the feast of the Immaculate Conception a few years ago, when I met my spiritual director on campus during my 19th annotation journey. After our meeting I wandered the campus and spent time in front of the statue in the second to last photo. As I stood there with Mary, this little moth or butterfly landed on my shoulder three different times. It felt deeply mystical and meaningful. I feel grateful to begin this new chapter in my education as I continue teaching theology at Immaculate Heart HS ihpandas. I hope to deepen my understanding of how Catholic theology can inform my social action, working towards greater solidarity with and liberation for all, as well as how it can inspire my art making, songwriting, and ministry. Immaculate Mary, pray for us. ❤️🔥🌹 🗡️🙏 St Ignatius of Loyola, pray for us. - Celebrating 5 years together!
- A week ago today I started my graduate program for my MA in Theology at LMU! I didn't post this picture then because that night I came home crying feeling pretty overwhelmed and not sure I could do the program. Being a second year full time high school teacher plus going to school full time was just feeling too overwhelming with the other circumstances of my life. So, I decided to drop a course and just start with one. While I have faith that God can provide and support me in all things, I think God also gives us wisdom to discern our capacity and limitations, and not to try to do it all. While I'd love to finish the program in 3 years, I'm letting go of a sense of urgency and trusting that God will guide me through it at my own pace, that there is no rush. One thing at a time, one day at a time. In the meantime, dipping my toes into the water of grad school more gradually will help me be a better teacher, student, spouse, friend, and artist. Maybe next semester I'll feel ready to be challenged more by two courses. Or maybe I'll do more courses in the summer when I'm off. In any case, this has definitely been a week of being humbled and learning to recognize my limits. On this Labor Day, may we recognize ourselves as human beings not human doings, and know that our worth is not tied to our productivity, no matter what late stage capitalism and ableism say. Rest, set boundaries, be gentle with yourself and others, and listen to your needs. May the work of our hands be done with love, not toil and resentment.
