This Artist Retreat planned by popgeekout and deb0nair and the team through muralarts for my cohort, The Fellowship of Black Artists cohort of 2025 was everything I needed. There was journaling, intention setting, breath work, herbal tea blending w/ aurawellnessatelier , sound baths w/ thelunamaye , and a view of the work by jamesturell that took me back to memories of my time massmocastudios and the friends that I made in that experience. It was so nice to do that with my growing framily in this program. You know that this year has been a bit wild for me and still is. We know that with the wild comes the good and the bad the ups and the downs, as has been my experience. When life presents such newness sometimes you shift in order to place yourself or to find your footing. I didn’t quite realize how far I’d gotten away from myself. This past weekend was a way of returning to self that was quite unexpected and I’m so thankful and pleased with muralarts contribution to that. I was able to breeeeathe and stretch and recalibrate and return inward. I’m really looking forward to the remaining time on this journey in fellowship.. and sharing this experience with all of you. Today in my Art Appreciation lecture, I watched eyes light up over brushstrokes, texture, and color, the same way mine did when I first fell in love with art (shoutout vincentvangogh_arty ) Balancing being both an artist and an educator has become one of the most meaningful parts of my journey. Creating is deeply personal for me, but sharing the why behind art, and helping others see instead of just look, that’s just something else entirely. There’s a quiet magic in returning to the roots, in revisiting the work of those who came before us, and guiding others as they find their voice in it too. It’s interesting to come across this audio as “How is your heart?” is a question I often find myself asking my closest friends and relatives periodically. The first few times I notice a jolting.. which I think stems from us not often checking in with ourselves or each other so deeply. Society has hardened us… hardened us to love… hardened us to expression of love… hardened us to vulnerability… hardened us to feeling deeply. I’d like to exist in softness… Softness is not weakness; it’s strength. It’s a show of confidence and stability of self, and acceptance of capability and security. I laugh when I say this but the saying is “big dogs don’t bark”. If you know that everything will work out in your favor, what are you hardened to? What are you protecting yourself from with those walls? What if we can be soft and also know that we are protected and cared for? What if we are so soft that we either repel or change others who offer anything that conflicts with that? If my softness frustrates you, if my kindness infuriates you, if my smile irritates your spirit, what is that really a reflection of? This piece is a self-portrait of my own resilience… A pondering of my own inner and outer strength… The strength to purge and rebuild… A strength to recognize when people, places, and things are no longer healthy for me and a strength to walk away… I’ve been a firsthand witness to myself withering away physically, having an existential crisis, almost quitting entirely… to having to build myself up, often with the support of my closest loved ones, and sometimes alone and scared. I had to keep going… and did. If not for the creator, the echos of the ancestors who kept going before me, if not for so many of you and your resilience letting me know that this too shall pass… so seriously thankful to all of you who’ve been rocking with me thus far.. and not just with your presence but in spirit ✨ This is the start of a new body of work with many tales of resilience… as I find that the trials that I face and learn of from others in life closely mirror the greater struggles of the collective. The pushing on through the pain… the standing up in the face of oppression… the loving through the hurt… the fighting through adversity. Resilience is a treasured part of the healing. I took my first ever cohort of my passion baby, The Diaspora Exchange Artist Residency Program, over to the jewel to my heart casanailhaart in the beautiful Ilhabela, São Paulo, Brazil. The Diaspora Exchange Artist Residency is a residency program created by me via the trust, sponsorship, and support of camdenfireworks in collaboration with artist communities around the globe, specifically throughout the African Diaspora. Thanks again casanailhaart for being our collaborative partner for this go around!!! It was an incredible experience supporting a couple of rising artists on their artist journey and opening their minds and their worlds up with this transformative experience. I always love it when collectors send images to me of my work hung in their homes but when we have a get together and I actually get to see it in person for the first time.. man oh man… it always does something to me! She even got a collage cake, like say you love me without saying you love me! Honestly, this weekend was just about everything I needed right now. Life has been very rough; I couldn’t even begin to scratch the surface of the big feelings I’ve been having lately about our world and the humans in it. We all need something better and we all need to be the something better for each other. I’m so thankful for all of my friends and loved ones who everyday are striving to be the something better for everyone around you. Thank you to those who make the extra effort to be inclusive, to be kind, to be loving, and to be soft. You never know what the next person is reeeeally going through and your kindness may very well be what it takes to save a life, or heal a wounded vessel. You are enough! Ever need that reminder?? Lately I’ve been meditating on the fact that I really am enough.. just the way I am. I don’t need to work harder, I don’t need to rush, I don’t need to stress more, I don’t need to do more. I just need to be. Sometimes even in all of our learning and accomplishments we feel that we need to do so much more. We fail to even appreciate how far we’ve come. We don’t even give credit to all those around us who love us just the way we are and those who meet us where we are. Lately I’ve just been full of mind blowing gratitude for the people who have come into my life to bless it.. bless it with love, and friendship, and nurturing and care.. gratitude for all of the new growth and opportunity… gratitude for the ways that dreams become realities and for the ways that realities feel like dreams. Today I’m touching up this large scale installation at ROOTS Dispensary in Willingboro, NJ! ROOTS is now open for both medical and recreational use and offers a drive thru for convenience! May is Lupus Awareness Month and you know I always try to make a special post! I thought I’d use this post to close the loop as so many of you have checked in on me after my recent 5 day stay in the hospital. Yeah… 5 days.. and my first time ever being admitted. I can’t really do enough to describe the feeling. Thank you to everyone who sent love, gifts, and encouraging words, they truly truly lifted my spirits, eased some of my worry, and helped in my healing process. I know many of you have been wondering how the heck I’ve been so active attending openings, award ceremonies, showing up to support friends and framily.. well let me say it’s not without the support of my solid team (shout out!). The shippers shipped my work, the drivers drove me, the nurses nursed me, the advisors advised me, the doctors medicated me, and I have been working most vulnerably with the most amazing gallery and museum teams across the board who have been just so great! All in all, I’ve been leaning into the spirit of the great ancestor Frida Kahlo.. iykyk… and all of the other artists and warriors battling chronic illnesses everyday! So while I have been resting, I’ve also still been working. Because as much as this is my passion, this is also my job and my career and these bills don’t pay themselves! Haha! I’m a Mural Arts Black Artist Fellow 2025!!! Words cannot express how thankful I am to be selected amongst this 2025 cohort. I really do see great things to come for all of us and am looking so forward to what’s next! The Philadelphia Fellowship for Black Artists was designed in 2020 to fund, foster, and elevate the important work of emerging Black artists living in Philadelphia. It is presented by TD Bank. The goal of the Fellowship is to build a long term community and creative connections among Fellows by fostering a spirit of practical, complimentary teamwork. Mural Arts will facilitate the development of skill building by providing equitable exposure to public and private art projects. I was so honored to have my work included in this exhibition rush_arts and to be apart of the 30th anniversary of the Simmons brother’s great dream of putting art where art is not ie. black and brown communities! The room was full of so so many of my friends, some who I haven’t seen in a long time!! This was such a historic exhibition and I am so proud of dannysimmonsjr for his work in this space. Rush Arts was founded with the intention of supporting emerging artists and artists fresh out of school and they have worked tirelessly to make it happen!
