Repeat after me: “I, do solemnly swear, that I will ignore all unsolicited comments, reviews and feedback on my yoga classes, unless it’s provided by a trusted source and based on specific, objective parameters. I will take in the nice feeling that accompanies positive feedback, but I will also let it go because it positive feedback can be as misleading as negative feedback.”

The simple answer: some online yoga trainings are great and some are not. But, the exact thing should be said about in-person trainings: some are great and some are not. So, the real question is: what makes any training legit, regardless of medium and whatever are the criteria for making this choice? I’ve taught in-person trainings for over 20 years and online for 12. These are the factors that I would assess when choosing if a training is legit.

Teaching yoga is even more important in times of accuse uncertainty and instability. You don’t have to fix everything or say the perfect thing. Don’t put that pressure on yourself. Just teach a good class, be kind in your interactions and provide students an environment to practice, process, and have their own experience. It’s not on you always know what to say or to heal all wounds. 2025-09-13 20:18:33 Teaching yoga is ev.. 1,032 -4% 25 -37%
There was no social-media fomo or half-baked info, no garbage class-pass reviews, and only one type of yoga mat (green or blue, take your choice). Huge yoga classes consisted of 20 students and at least 17 of them wore biker shorts (black or grey, take your choice). And, if you went to yoga class in the 90’s (in the US) you were part of a subculture—you had to WANT to be THERE because it wasn’t EVERYWHERE.

It wasn’t better and it wasn’t worse—it was just different. Andrea and I reminisce about our experience practicing in the 90’s newest episode of Yagi-sh and we’d love for you to listen. And, if you were there, we’d love for you to share a 90’s practice story below. 2025-09-09 20:08:44 There.. 2,127 +98% 125 +213%
As yoga teachers, we’ve all been there: we want to stop last-minute sequencing and move beyond ONLY teaching drop-in classes. We want to expand our repertoire and teach in other formats including workshops, series’, and online to complement our studio work. We also want to create curriculums and be more consistent in order to motivate our students to continue practicing with us. BUT, you we don’t know how to begin—or, worse, we don’t have the confidence.

This training has you covered. Let me help you with the next phase of your teaching career.

Tell me if I’m on to something about our yoga practice. I think we’re less harsh and judgmental about our twists than other families of poses. I’m not saying they’re everyone’s favorite family. But they don’t seem to trigger our aspirations or insecurities as much as our backbends, arm balances, inversions or forward bends. What do you think? Same? This one thing every yoga student should hear: Your yoga teachers care about you and your yoga practice, but I promise they’re not thinking about that amazing crow pose you finally nailed once class is over—neither are the other students in class. 30 years of yoga has taught me this:
The real progress comes from what you let go of, not what you collect.

These 5 shifts have brought me more strength, adaptability, and joy in my practice — and more authenticity in my teaching.

In the last 30 years, I’ve let go of practicing in biker shorts, sporting long side-burns, pushing every backbend beyond my limit, and thinking that strength doesn’t matter. I’ve even let go of the belief that there’s one true way of doing each posture, exalting my teachers (of course, I still love and respect them), and dozens of cringey cues. I haven’t, however, let go of this practice that I love, this partner that I love andreaferretti, or using the words, “right” and “good” way, way too much.

It’s easy to lose your way when you’re trying to make everyone happy or fit into what’s trending.
But, trying to please everyone or follow trends will pull you away from your true voice. It’s natural to want validation - but lasting fulfillment comes from teaching what feels real to you. When you stay rooted in your own values and passions, you build a voice that connects more deeply - and endures far longer than any quick trend.

Being a yoga teacher can be overwhelming. While no single piece of advice can solve every challenge you’ll face, there are essential insights I’ve learned along the way that can help you feel grounded, confident, and connected—especially in your early years.

In our latest Yogaland episode, Andrea and I share four key strategies to support you in your first five years of teaching:

-Focus on genuine connection and soft skills
-Savor your own practice and remove unnecessary pressure
-Accept your inevitable mistakes and teach from authenticity
-Create consistency for your students to build trust and engagement

These strategies won’t erase the complexity of teaching, but they can help you embrace it with greater ease, clarity, and joy.

I’d love to hear your thoughts! What have you found most challenging—or most rewarding—about your yoga teaching journey? Let me know in the comments!

Students don’t know how introverted their teachers are. Most of us just have situational extroversion: when it’s’ time to stand in front of a group or teach into a camera, we have a switch that we can flip. It turns on action mode.

It’s a weird dichotomy, because most of us that became teachers did so because we fell in love with the quiet, internal experience of the practice. It’s nothing that we can’t manage, but, for most of us, learning to navigate the social landscape of teaching is the trickiest part of the job.

Getting stuck in Triangle—before you’re EVEN IN TRIANGLE—feels awful. Here, we change the order of operations to avoid this common problem: Instead of rotating our hips away from our front leg BEFORE we transition into the pose, we rotate them AFTER we transition. You’ll still do the exact same pelvic movements, but you’ll do them in the opposite order. Your students will love it, the crowd will go wild. Let me know how it goes.

Every cue on this list-even the ones I suggest to replace-is technically correct in the right situation. BUT, I also think that each common cue can be phrased in a simpler, clearer way.

So, give these options a try. Even if you don’t want to fully replace the common phrasing, consider using these to vary your repertoire!

Transitions are everywhere in yoga, but they’re often overlooked. I’m invoking the power of Paranjali, yet again, to make a pose decree that will save you and your students countless hours of unnecessary suffering: YOU DON’T HAVE TO SQUARE YOUR HIPS IN WARRIOR ONE. Instead, rotate your hips forward until they stop. That’s right: just turn them until they stop—that’s far enough. Once they’re no longer turning, stop trying to turn them further and focus on rotating your torso.

There you go. It’s time to live a little and enjoy the pose while saving your lower-back and sacrum (not to mention saving yourself from the embarrassment of an unnecessarily sad and short stride). The link in my bio has a full breakdown of the hips in Warrior 1, so please feel free to take a deeper dive.

The internal clock that looks forward and says, “by so and so date, I need to be able to do XY or Z pose” is almost guaranteed to cause you trouble. But, that’s nothing compared to the turmoil of looking backward and thinking, “I USED TO BE able to…” or “I USED TO LOOK like….”

If you’re fortunate and sensible enough to practice for a long time, your body and priorities will change. You’ll encounter life with all its obstacles, beauty and complexity. In doing so, you might fall away from your practice for a while. You might have children. You might get injured. And, you most definitely will age.

When you hear this voice, tell it to stfu (with loving kindness) and meet yourself where you are. Get on your mat and savor it. Even more so if you’re a teacher. I’ll take my maturity (what little there is) and my life experiences in my role as student and teacher any day over what I used to be able to do.
