- Sometimes, viral cafés can be underwhelming … but not this one. We visited RURU Café, which recently opened in Shibuya (the original is in Kamakura), and we enjoyed it! Known for its unique “water table” concept, in RURU drinks are served on clear platters that blend seamlessly with the water, creating a cool “floating” effect. The design incorporates traditional Japanese aesthetics, flowing water features, and lava stones, making it a tranquil escape in the heart of the city. 🇯🇵 Want access to all our recommendations? Comment ‘JLAL’ to get our comprehensive guide and pinned map 🙌🏼 🍵 The menu offers matcha-based desserts, a lava cheesecake, and specialty lattes, with most items priced around ¥1,000 (~$6–7). Everything we tried was tasty, though not necessarily groundbreaking. It’s a charming spot where you’re paying a bit more for the experience and ambiance, but the wow factor makes it worthwhile. Save it to your map - if you’re in Shibuya and looking for something unique, then check it out. With only 15 seats and no reservations, expect a queue, especially as it continues to gain popularity. #japanlikealocal #japanguide #japanfood #tokyofood #tokyodessert #🇯🇵
- This is Japan’s cutest Shinkansen and it runs from Osaka to Hakata (& back) 🚄😍 You can book the Hello Kitty Shinkansen via klooktravel & use code “JAPANLL” for extra $$ off 🙌🏼 The train numbers for Hello Kitty are Kodama 840 (Hakata to Shin-Osaka) and Kodama 851 (Shin-Osaka to Hakata). Make sure to double check the train schedule because this Shinkansen operates once daily in each direction and may not run every day. On its route, the train will stop in popular destinations like Kobe, Okayama, and Hiroshima. The shortest route is about 12 min from Shin-Osaka to Shin-Kobe and the longest is about 4.5 hours from Osaka to Hakata. This is a regular Shinkansen so there is no additional fee 🙌🏼 From Osaka to Hakata its about ~$100 for the ordinary cart. For JR Pass holders the ride is included at no extra cost. 🚃 Car 1: HELLO! PLAZA: a shop with local specialties, exclusive merch, photo opp location. 🚃Car 2: KAWAII! ROOM: Features Hello Kitty-themed interiors & non-reserved seating; arrive early to secure a spot. - This train from Kyoto to Osaka costs less than $3 and has a Japanese garden onboard 😍🚂👇🏼 If you’re traveling between Osaka and Kyoto, forget the regular commuter trains and take the Kyo-train Garaku, a train that feels like stepping into a traditional ryokan. This unique train features six distinct cars, each themed after a different Kyoto season, complete with tatami-style seating, wooden interiors, and even a miniature Japanese Zen garden onboard! 🌿🏯 Car 2 has a Winter/ bamboo theme with a traditional tsubo-niwa (garden). Car 3 is a Spring / cherry blossom theme with seats arranged to face the windows, and picturesque views. Car 5 (Autumn) also has a garden and car 6 has tatimi-style box seating. The train runs from Kyoto-kawaramachi to Osaka-umeda station (and return) only on weekends and holidays. It’s a regular train that doesn’t require any special reservations or additional payments. A one way ticket is about $2.75 for a 43 minute ride. When you arrive at the station, you just have to make sure you take the Hankyu Railways entrance and check the scheduled times of departure.
