The meeting room at the venerable hiiragiya_ryokan (photo theirs) in #Kyoto is beautiful, I love the vaulted bamboo ceiling flourish, and the earthen walls have been built in the “Ki-Otsu” style, which used to be quite common, using a kind of yellow clay originally sourced from the Otsu area of Shiga (next to Kyoto), which is mixed with lime and hemp fibre. There’s also a technique called Otsu-migaki to give it a golden luminescent finish. You can also see some karakami (I think) handprinted paper in show at the back which is particular to Kyoto too.
Apparently Hiiragiya is accepting donations of books in English (possibly other languages too) on Japan for its library📚

Simply serene view over the mystical Lake Biwa from fukudaya_oumi (photo theirs) which was also a hatago (inn) serving travellers during the Edo Period, when this area was part of a route linking the likes of Kyoto with the remote and snowy Hokuriku region of northwestern Honshu—much less known compared to the Gokaido, the five sanctioned highways that led to Edo (now Tokyo), passing by the eastern side of Biwa, but no less fascinating. 2025-07-22 23:26:49 Simply serene view over.. 1,715 +61% 9 +295%
Kansai-based architects kisaburo.co.ltd built the Minna no Toshoshitsu (photo: keishiro.y) a library in Asuka, Nara Pref, where anyone can freely come and exchange books. It is part of forest-based learning initiative morilabo2017

I think some of the walls might since have been filled with clay and some of the interior left exposed like this, but it looks pretty!

yohaku_japanesetea_cafe is an organic Japanese tea establishment offering wholesome meals including gluten free options in Kawasaki. They also have workshops now and again. I like this old house ambience very much, as you can probably tell, and the gentle light filtered through the shoji.

The wrong season I know, but I was dreaming a little of my first autumn in Japan fifteen years ago when there were nowhere near the numbers of tourists we have now and I’d often have gardens to myself in the mornings—this lovely shot from the Kadan Aoi Suite of gorakadan (photo theirs) evoked that a little bit for me. The ryokan in the popular onsen resort area of Hakone has a history dating to the 30s as a private villa and is planning to open some new locations soon I believe, including one with Fuji views. If I can find out out more about who designed the garden I shall add it later🍂

The craftsmanship in this new residential project by nanba_kenchiku_official (photo theirs) in Okayama is astonishing. The house has been built in the typical minka farmhouse style around a central pillar called a daikokubashira which usually separates the doma earthen floor area from the rest of the house (that is usually raised)—not that you can quite see it here I think. Here in this room you can see they have laid the floor in the chosenbari style (I dont know if it really originates from Korea as implied) with multiple sections of shorter floorboards separated from each other which is really dynamic and interesting. Another unusual feature is that the clay wall reveals the nuki cross beams that are keeping together the “weave” that’s hidden beneath the clay. But the star is arguably the table, the top of which can actually be removed to reveal a functional charcoal hearth beneath. Simply beautiful 👏

Bringing you this beautiful image from the talented Sakagami Rie akodantsu_mutsuki, one of the few makers of akodantsu, a variety of woven cotton carpet that takes its name after the sleepy town of Ako on the Inland Sea but originated on the Asian continent and the techniques of which were passed on to a Japanese researcher in the late Edo/early Meiji periods—a fascinating story!—and thanks to Sakagami-san’s efforts has been revived, having almost disappeared completely in the modern era👏

This photo was from a recent exhibition in one of my favourite towns, at a gallery called sen_paku, but the artist will be opening her atelier in June (I’m afraid I don’t know details or if there is foreign language provision, so please kindly see her page) which would surely be a privilege to visit, and is exhibiting in Kyoto next.

Oh, and thank you so much, I noticed that as of today there are 120k of you following this page🥹🌸🙏 2025-06-07 16:49:52 Bri.. 948 -11% 1 -56%

ryosokuin temple in Kyoto (photo theirs) is now open for their special summer opening until July 13th featuring an exhibition of sumptuous aizome natural indigo dyed works by artist duo buaisou_i based in Tokushima💙 It is also possible to book an early morning viewing of the garden, and there are meditation sessions held once a month. The garden is famous for having Chinese Lizard Tail plant, an unusual medicinal herb, in bloom at this time of year, and as friend and Japan garden expert Mark Hovane notes: its “leaves only turn and remain white for the short period when the plant is trying to attract various “pollinators” [to] the subtle and delicate white flowers that are blooming at this time. After pollination has been achieved, the leaves return to their all green color.” He also notes that its blooming also marks the end of the annual rice planting season 🌾

Details in English about the special opening can be found on their page. 2025-06-02 23:39:07 ryosokuin t.. 1,093 +3% 2 -12%
Happy Saturday! Feeling inspired by one of the creations of takashi_okuno_and_associates (photo theirs) based on the island of Shikoku and whose beautiful residential tearooms have been appreciated on this page before. Some features of tearooms you might notice are the different types of ceiling which indicate where guests and host sit (in this case an ajiro woven ceiling, of which there are several possible patterns, and hira “flat” panelled ceiling) which may be from bamboo, reed or timber and is usually higher where the guests sit; that the tokobashira post of the tokonoma alcove is of a wood distinct from other types in use in the room and may be chosen for its peculiar shape (this one is not so avant garde but elegant, and I feel the stately calligraphy on the scroll matches with it perfectly), smaller shoji-covered windows to let in measured amounts of light on key areas (I believe this one near the floor is a window and not a nijiriguchi, so the entrance is from inside the house and not the garden). 🍵

A stunning 2022 residential renovation project by Toshihito Yokouchi Architect & Associates (yokouchi_t_portfolio; photo shot by Ogawa Shigeo and property of the architect) at a property built in the side of Yoshidayama in #Kyoto with privileged views of Mt Daimonji (maybe you can’t see very well the mountain opposite with the clearing which has a big 大 character on it). Indeed the renovation took into account the annual gatherings here to enjoy the August okuribi “sending-off” fires that take place on the mountain (in addition to four others in the city) at the end of the obon festival. It must be incredible to watch it from here🔥😍 The karakami design on the gold fusuma screens in the living space look so intricate and I would love to know who the artist is who painted the lotus pieces in the dining area…

comion_kyoto (photo theirs) designed by Day Inc and their parent staple__inc is a new coworking space in #Kyoto that is part of a growing ecosystem around Japan. The site in Kyoto is also home to a restaurant, cafe and ceramics studio. It’s along the Shirakawa canal and very close to the Namikawa Cloissoné Museum, which is one of my favourites. A hot desk starts at about 110USD for a month excluding a one-off membership fee.

Have you travelled to Japan for remote workation yet and what was your experience?👩‍💻👨‍💻

I don’t often see new residential projects (compared to heritage home renovations) in Japan that really inspire me as much as this incredible project appropriately named the Grove Strolling Corridor by kohei_taniguchi_andto Architects (photo theirs, shot by Koji Fujii), that is one with the lush old forest in Karuizawa. The structure is raised for protection against the humid conditions at the forest floor, and built around a grand, 26m tall kihada (Amur cork) tree in the centre that also provides shade. Apparently there are even leaves pressed into the floorboards 🍃 The furniture here is all custom. On a practical note, I was impressed to learn that the owner spent the winter here comfortably with just one wall heating unit on—winters up here can get very cold indeed and Japanese buildings are not best known for insulation! I hope it can become more viable to live with nature and in carbon footprint-light way like this! See lots more photos of the property at the architect’s page ✨

This kominka renovation by hishidakoumuten in Nagano (photo theirs) exudes quiet simplicity. Also, although Scandi furniture features a lot in Japanese interior design these days, I’m happy when I spot custom pieces like these, especially the stool, the maker of which has decided to work with nature’s asymmetry! Teru Kensetsu Architects in Higashi Osaka (teru_ishikirivillage, photo theirs) undertook a renovation of a kominka house over 100 years old. They explain that part of that process here was to reveal some of the original features again, like the doma (earthen floor) and clay walls, as it became common practice to cover these up, especially with plywood, in more recent times. The result looks super!🤩 See more pics of this project on their page.

kitokito_life (photos theirs) in Fukuyama renovated a 80 year-old kominka in the countryside. Its genkan entrance hall is quite spacious and has a grand gotenjo grid pattern ceiling that you more often find in temples these days (and not uncommonly with squares painted with seasonal flowers and motifs—I would be so tempted to do that!) yet doesn’t feel imposing at all. I like the idea of having these more modern internal glass sliding doors between rooms (though I loved the glass shoji in my old house which had antique patterned glass panels in them), which also create the illusion of spaciousness too here. You can find more pics on their website and see how the couple who own the property now are enjoying their inaka-gurashi (life in the country)!
