I loved hanging out at mangosbeachpv during my month in Puerto Vallarta!

It's in the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood which is a little less touristy than Centro and the Romantic Zone. The views are great, and the atmosphere is very chill and friendly.

Their minimum consumption requirement was 500 pesos, which I felt was really reasonable, and their menu offers a mix of Mexican fare and fusion items. I ordered the aguachile on several occasions! 😋

I had my nose in my book much of time I was there but I recommend scanning the horizon on occasion because I was lucky to enough to see dolphins and whales frolicking during my visits!

There are also guys running parasailing tours right in front of the beach club, which is fun to watch. One of my friends was daring enough to give it a go and he had fun (and arrived back on land safely)!

Looking for beaches that aren’t crowded?👇

Cozumel’s Punta Sur Eco Beach Park is the place to be.

Yes, there’s an entrance fee to get in, but based on these views I think we can agree that it’s worth it!

This footage was captured during high season. Even though there was a cruise ship in port that day, all I had to do was walk 5-10 minutes down El Cielo Beach and I had it all to myself.

While all the other travelers hung out by the food stand (fair), I had a dreamy little afternoon in my own.

Well… not quite. I did meet a ray in the water 😉

✨ As a solo traveler, safety is my top priority, and I willingly invest a little more for peace of mind during my solo adventures! Here are 3 things I happily pay extra for in the name of safety 👇

☀️Daytime Arrival ☀️
Opting for a daytime arrival is a game-changer! It helps me feel safe and comfortable when finding my way to my accommodation and getting the lay of the land, without the concerns of traveling late at night.

🚗 Airport Transportation 🚗
Secure airport transportation is a non-negotiable. I like to research my options and choose my mode of transportation BEFORE I arrive, so I’m not burdened by decision-fatigue at the end of a long travel day. Airport transportation ALWAYS costs more than other types of transport, but it’s money well spent for the peace of mind it offers. I build it into my travel budget.

🏡 A Safe Neighborhood: 🏡
Investing in accommodations in a safe and convenient neighborhood is key. It provides a sense of security, allowing me to explore and enjoy my destination with confidence. I like to be close to amenities and attractions so I can walk rather than using taxis or public transportation for every last foray.

✨Remember, your safety is worth every penny spent. What safety measures do you prioritize during your travels? Share your tips!

From anxious 👉🏼 to confidently traveling Mexico sola

Comment “TAKE ME” to for my free e-course on confident solo travel in Mexico!

I know what it’s like to have a dream trip in mind, only to let anxiety, fear, the weight of other peoples’ opinions, and your day-to-day responsibilities erode your confidence to the point where you opt to stay home.

But life is short NOT to do the things that really excite you. Whether it’s a dream vacay, a sabbatical, or a move to Mexico, we’re gonna make that trip happen.

HERE’S HOW:

Make a commitment to yourself and then build a plan around it.

Here’s how I did it, step-by-step.

1. Set a date. 📆 It’s never going to feel like a convenient time. I chose a date far enough in the future that I could budget for it but soon enough that it excited me! Waiting too long just enables you to make more excuses.

2. Research and plan💡 If you’re experiencing anxiety and nerves around taking a trip alone, knowing what to expect in Mexico will help reduce your overwhelm. Read up on your chosen destination, learn about the best neighborhoods, research cultural norms, and start brushing up on your Spanish.

3. Build a budget.💰 Calculate your expenses, set a budget, and start saving. Remember, solo travel can be affordable with smart planning. Keep in mind that prices fluctuate seasonally and that hotspots like Tulum or Los Cabos are inevitably more pricey than more off-the-beaten-path destinations.

4. Connect with Fellow Travelers 🌍 Join online communities, connect with other solo female travelers, and gain insights and inspiration from their experiences. This is key for staying safe and informed during your travels.

5. Book Accommodation and Flights. ✈️ Once you’re comfortable with your plans, book your accommodation and flights. Your adventure is officially happening!

Feeling nervous is natural, but taking these steps will help turn your dream into a reality. Embrace the excitement and the unknown, and Mexico will reward you with incredible experiences! Solo travel is endlessly challenging and enriching. It’s scary, but you’ll learn so much about yourself when you do it! 🇲🇽💃

Do you like quiet beaches? Lush jungles? Bird spotting? What about refreshing coconuts?

Just an hour south of Puerto Vallarta you’ll find the village of Boca de Tomatlán. From here, enjoy a moderate 2 hour hike along the coast to Playa Las Animas!

Enjoy the beach for a couple of hours and then catch a water taxi back to Boca and head home 🙃

This is one of the dreamiest parts of the coast that I’ve seen and my favorite thing I did on my last trip to Puerto Vallarta!

If you're on the hunt for a budget hotel in Puerto Vallarta, Hotel Posada de Roger is a solid option.

It's located right in the heart of the romantic zone, 2 blocks from the beach, and offers several wonderful outdoor spaces for reading and relaxing when you need a break from the beach. You might even be able to spot some rare birds from the rooftop terrace!

There's also a full kitchen available for guests to use!

But, if you don't feel like cooking, no worries because there are dozens of awesome restaurants within a 1-block radius of the hotel.

Playa Las Animas is a beautiful beach located south of Puerto Vallarta along the Bay of Banderas, and you can reach it by boat or hiking!

The hike takes about 2 hours (plus breaks for swimming!) and starts in the town of Boca de Tomatlán, an hour south of Puerto Vallarta.

📍CHOLULA, PUEBLA

Located 20 minutes from downtown Puebla, Cholula is a scenic pueblo mágico known as the home of the world’s largest pyramid (by volume).

The pyramid’s Nahuatl name, Tlachihualtepetl, means “man-made mountain.” Fitting, right? It looks like a mountain, too, given that it’s mostly underground. It is unclear how the structure became buried in soil, but the fact that the Spanish constructed a church on top of it only serves to conceal its true identity.

The pyramid is still an active archaeological site, and you can tour the labyrinth of underground passages (slide 5) that have been excavated within the structure. Afterward, head up the hill to the Our Lady of Remedies church to admire the architecture and the panoramic views of the area.

DRIVING IN MEXICO

While the traffic laws in Mexico are technically pretty similar to Canada or the US, the driving culture is very different. Namely, laws are more like suggestions in Mexico.

Also, topes.

Here are some of my top tips, but I’m sure you will all have more to add:

🚗 Watch for topes: These giant speed bumps are found in the most unexpected places and if you’re not prepared they can be very jarring.

🚗 Stick to the toll roads: Not only are they in better repair, toll roads (or cuotas) are also patrolled more frequently, so if you run into trouble you have a better chance of getting help.

🚗 Don’t drive at night: Between hidden topes, animals in the road, and potential road blocks, it’s not super safe. Plan to drive only during daylight hours.

🚗 Military check points are a thing: It’s not uncommon to be stopped by military when you’re on the road in Mexico. Usually they’ll just ask you a few questions about where you’re coming from and where you’re going, but sometimes they’ll want to search your car. It will be a big ordeal. All of them will be holding machine guns. As long as you don’t have drugs or weapons on board they’ll let you be on your way.

Are you starting to see why I’m such a big advocate for bus travel in Mexico?

Okay, now it’s your turn! Drop your advice in the comments.

Many of the tipping practices in Mexico are pretty similar to what you're used to in Canada or the US, but there are some you might not expect.

The main things to know are:

⭐️ tip 10-20% in restaurants
⭐️ it's not customary to tip taxi drivers unless they help with your bags
⭐️ tip grocery store baggers; they do not earn a salary
⭐️ tip gas station attendants as they also may not earn a salary

Cruising Cozumel in a jeep is a fun mini-road trip you can enjoy in Mexico. mr_lemune and I did this for my birthday a couple of years ago and it was SO. MUCH. FUN.

☀️🌴 Our favorite stop was Punta Sur Eco Park because at the very tip of the park we found El Cielo beach, which is totally undeveloped except for a small restaurant selling snacks, beers & renting snorkel gear.

It's the perfect place for a chill beach day. 🏖 The area next to the snack booth can get crowded, but if you walk down the beach a few meters you'll have plenty of open space.

Chichen Itza was once one of the most significant cities in the Mayan empire. It was built sometime before the 5th Century and at one point had as many as 50,000 inhabitants.

🇲🇽 Now, Chichen Itza is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. The site is famous for its impressive El Castillo pyramid, which features one step for each day of the year.

There are tons of other cool structures on-site as well, including a huge pelota ball court.

Chichen makes a great day trip from the Riviera Maya or Merida, as it’s just a couple of hours away. You can get there by bus, as part of a tour, or rent a car and drive. ☀️ Just be sure to get there early to skip the crowds and avoid the sun.
