- Here’s a transcript for those who are somehow still confused on the ACTUAL ISSUE: I’m going to spell it out really simply for anyone still struggling to see why e.l.f. working with Matt Rife is an issue. e.l.f. has spent years building a reputation for empowering women. They’ve run empowerment campaigns, partnered with women’s charities, and even platformed survivors’ rights activists in their ‘Show Your(s)e.l.f.’ series. Matt Rife is the comedian who opened his Netflix special with a domestic violence joke about a woman with a black eye implying she ‘wouldn’t have it if she could cook. As well as making several other derogatory comments about women’s body and how his comedy isn’t for women. He describes this as ‘dark comedy’. People can like dark comedy. People can find it funny. That’s fine. This isn’t about “banning joke”. It’s about brand alignment. If your whole thing is uplifting women, choosing someone whose most viral moment is making light of abuse sends a completely different message. To survivors and advocates, who have chosen to spend their money on elf because of their values, it says those values aren’t as important as a viral campaign. That the empowerment talk is just marketing. We don’t truely care, we just want your money. And that’s what makes this such a bad move. It doesn’t just clash with their image, it undermines it. And all of their alleged values. Dark comedy can live in its lane. Comedians can make jokes about whatever they think their audience may find funny. But if your brand promise is empowering women, Matt Rife isn’t the guy you choose to put in your ads. So disappointed in elfcosmetics #skincare #elfcosmetics
