📍Yanagawa, Fukuoka

About 2,200 years ago, this area used to be a swamp near the sea. People dug canals so they could live here.

Later, when Yanagawa Castle was built in the 1500s, the canals also helped protect the castle. That’s how the town got its network of waterways.

And that’s the beginning of the beautiful scenery you can still enjoy in Yanagawa today🍃

A Day at Japanese Maid Cafe🎀

Photo 4: Birthday cake🎂
Photo 5-6: hitomi-san, standing in the center, has 20 years of maid experience! She’s actually a mom of two… 😮

At-Home Cafe was filled with magic, from Moe Moe Kyun spells to pink curry, and even a birthday celebration—it was a day packed with fun! 🌸💕🎂🎀

This time, I returned home to two adorable maids. Mizukin was as friendly and cute as ever, and it was my first time meeting Kumori-chan, who was also incredibly sweet🥰

After the cafe experience, I also joined a maid performance show! The maids sparkled like idols on stage, and the Masters and Princesses were cheering, dancing, and completely immersed in the energy. It truly felt like a different world—a one-of-a-kind experience!

Spectacular Ocean View Onsen on the Coast in Japan ♨️

We stayed at an onsen hotel in Minamisanriku. The sea stretched out endlessly, with mountains in the distance, creating a breathtaking view ✨

As expected from a seaside hotel, the seafood for dinner was so fresh and delicious. Truly grateful for the blessings of the sea🌊

Wild seagulls visit the rooms, and guests can feed them snacks sold at the hotel shop, which draws them in. (The hotel has verified with experts that this has no negative impact on the birds' health or the sea.) They were a bit noisy haha, but so cute😍😍😍

Minamisanriku is also an area that was heavily affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The homes around the hotel were mostly destroyed, and the hotel itself was damaged by the tsunami.

Luckily, the hotel had strong earthquake resistance, preventing any damage from the quake's shaking, and it even served as an evacuation center at the time. The staff mentioned that 2024-05-08 17:30:00 Spe.. 190 +69% 4 -16%
A Beautiful Blue Hot Spring in Japan, Like a Painting

The Takayu Onsen, with about 400 years of history, boasts a beautiful blue color. The Adachiya Ryokan's large communal bath features a massive open-air bath like a river, and even a cave, making it truly unique. The blue hue is due to its sulfur content: the source water is clear, but exposure to air turns it into a milky blue. The strong sulfur smell is very characteristic of hot springs, which might surprise beginners.

We visited in late March, and I was shocked to find it still snowing. While it felt like spring in Tokyo, snowfall can continue in Japan's Tohoku region until April. The white snow beautifully complemented the blue hot spring, creating a more mystical and stunning scene.

The Adachiya Ryokan is in the countryside of Fukushima, surrounded by a few other hot spring inns, but with no restaurants or souvenir shops nearby. Takayu Onsen has long been used as a therapeutic spring, and local rules historically prohibited leisure activities and noise-making items.

The lack of nightlife allows for a peaceful, natural setting, offering a different charm compared to other hot spring towns. It's perfect for those seeking relaxation over a noisy environment☺️

Inside, the ryokan blends historical elements with a touch of Western style, creating a chic ambiance. Complimentary drinks and local dishes are also available, making for a high-quality stay. The Tohoku-accented, slow manner of speech from the staff was soothing too. It's uncertain if they speak fluent English, but they welcome non-Japanese guests, likely with translation devices.

Hidden gems where you can enjoy Japan's traditional scenery

On January 1st this year, Ishikawa Prefecture was hit by an earthquake. The Noto region in the north is still undergoing reconstruction efforts. Meanwhile, the Kanazawa and Kaga regions in the south suffered less damage but have seen a decline in tourists, leading to a need for economic support across Ishikawa.

Kanazawa boasts traditional streetscapes and delicious seafood, making it a fulfilling tourist destination. Plus, the must-visit areas are relatively compact, making it easy to explore by bus or on foot.

Often referred to as 'Little Kyoto,' Kanazawa offers a quieter, more laid-back experience than Kyoto.

We encountered delicious sushi and Japanese sweets, geishas walking through the tea district at night, beautiful flute sounds echoing through the streets, and cute stray cats... It felt like we were the only ones privy to this world.

We stayed in a private lodging near Higashi Chaya District, located in a quiet area perfect for sightseeing and experiencing the essence of Kanazawa with its Japanese-style interior.

To be honest, I love Kanazawa so much that I secretly dread it becoming crowded with people😂 lol But it's definitely a place I want everyone to know about!

We're praying for the people in Ishikawa Prefecture to return to their normal lives as soon as possible.

Japan's Maid Cafes 🎀

Maid cafes are a uniquely Japanese concept where female staff dress up as maids to serve customers. Fun fact: staff who aren't dressed as maids are referred to as 'fairies' 🧚

Following my visit to Mizukin last year, this time I met Chimu-chan! She was incredibly cute and the experience was both fun and soothing💓 Although all maids claim to be 'eternally 17,' Mizukin and Chimu-chan stand out with over a decade of experience each😳

Visiting a maid cafe might feel similar to enjoying Disneyland. It's lighter in spirit since it's ultimately a place to dine, but it's definitely a mood booster. I love the happy and bright atmosphere inside☺️

At the @Home Cafe, about 30% of the customers are women (as princesses), and many people visit alone, which might be surprising.

Curious about what we talked about or the menu? Check out my YouTube video for a virtual experience of a maid cafe 🎀

Finding Peace in Bustling Kyoto

We stayed at Nazuna Kyoto Tsubaki Street, a hotel that has renovated an entire L-shaped alley with over 110 years of history, turning each traditional townhouse into guest rooms.

It's fascinating to have the whole alley as part of the hotel!

It was so beautifully preserved, it felt like a movie set, and I half-expected a maiko (apprentice geisha) to appear😂

The hotel combines modern comforts like beautiful baths and underfloor heating with its historic charm. The dinner featuring Wagyu beef was incredibly delicious!

Kyoto has been quite crowded with tourists lately. Choosing a hotel that allows you to immerse yourself in Kyoto's ambiance, not just through sightseeing but also by simply staying there, seems like a great option.

Interestingly, most of the guests here are international travelers. The staff are fluent in English.

There's a tram station near the hotel, which I recommend over the city bus. It's perfect for exploring places like the bamboo groves of Arashiyama and enjoying some local snacks!

An onsen ryokan in Japan's snow village for those in the know☃️

We stayed at Satoyama Jujo in the countryside of Niigata Prefecture. Despite this year's warm winter and less snow, we still enjoyed the beautiful snowy landscape.

The open-air onsen bath surrounded by nature was truly exceptional. Not only were the views of snow-covered mountains breathtaking, but the hot spring water was of good quality. It was odorless and silky like a serum, heated just right for a perfect soak. I might have had the longest bath of my life here.

Though the ryokan opened in 2014 and might seem relatively new, the building itself carries a 150-year history. The ryokan is produced by the editor-in-chief of a popular magazine. The mix of traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern art creates an exquisitely balanced atmosphere with excellent taste.

Thanks to special insulation materials, the inside stays warm enough to make heating almost unnecessary, despite being in a snowy region. Just like in a typical Japanese home, we spent our time comfortably in just socks without shoes or slippers.

The peak snow season here is from January to February. Last year, they had up to 4 meters of snow! While other seasons must be beautiful too, I'm glad we could stay during winter☺️

Hokkaido, the northernmost prefecture of Japan, is a stunning winter wonderland.

At Hoshino Resorts TOMAMU in Hokkaido, temperatures can plummet to as low as -30°C(-22°F) in the coldest months. We had the unique opportunity to stay at their annual, seasonal ice hotel for the first time!

The Ice hotel is a private dome made entirely of ice and snow. It features an ice bed, sofas, and even an open-air bath surrounded by ice, transporting you to another world.

But worry not! With electric outlets, warm sleeping bags, fluffy pajamas, books, delicious food, and drinks, it truly serves as a 'hotel'. The clam chowder served as a midnight snack was unforgettable, showcasing Hokkaido's rich seafood🥹💖

The inside of the Ice Hotel is maintained at -7°C(19.4℉). Not being used to the snow, I was cold throughout, but it was manageable😂

Nearby, there's also an ice convenience store and ice ramen shop open till 9:30 pm, where not just the ice hotel guests, but other guests can enjoy as well.

If you're keen on staying in the ice hotel, be aware that reservations start in the previous fall, and you need to book a regular indoor room on the premises at the same time.

With many non-Japanese staff, you don't need to know Japanese to enjoy your stay🙆‍♀️ Being part of Hoshino Resorts, a major hotel group in Japan, the service is, of course, excellent!

A library hotel with 1500 books in Tokyo.

This one-of-a-kind hotel is directed by the renowned Japanese bookstore, 'Tsutaya Shoten.' It's home to an array of rare books that you wouldn't typically find in regular bookstores. From detailed works on Kabuki culture to sci-fi comics, large hardcover photo albums, and more, it's a treasure trove for book lovers.

They offer multilingual service, and 60% of the books are written in foreign languages, mainly English. I heard that more than half of the guests are travelers from overseas.

It's a long-established hotel with a 75-year history, known for its very polite and kind service. They even found my scarf that I had lost😵‍💫🙏haha

You can easily access it from Tokyo Station, Haneda Airport, or Narita Airport, and with just a short walk, you can reach Tokyo Tower and Zojoji Temple, making it perfect for sightseeing. But the hotel itself is situated in a tranquil area, which I really appreciated for a peaceful stay.

A Hot Spring Ryokan Straight Out of an Anime

This secluded hot spring ryokan is located in Fukushima Prefecture.

Right at the entrance, you're greeted with an awe-inspiring floating stage in an atrium where shamisen performances are held from 4 to 6 pm.

The stage gained fame for resembling the headquarters of the archenemy in the popular anime 'Demon Slayer'. Its unreal beauty is truly moving!

The meals, the onsen, and the staff's hospitality were all wonderful, making for a truly memorable stay. The ryokan also showcases traditional crafts, dolls, and mochi-making stage from Aizu in Fukushima, allowing guests to immerse in Japanese culture.

Located in the countryside, getting there can be a bit tricky and not many people speak English. However, the staff are so kind that i think the stay isn't too difficult. With a translation app, you'll be just fine. The pricing is reasonable, offering great value for your money.

I recommend using the nearby Ashinomaki Onsen Station. The station is home to a cat stationmaster! Although not always present, we were lucky to meet the sleeping Sakura, the current stationmaster. (Note: All photography, including videos, is prohibited due to a previous cat stationmaster, Basu, suffering eye problems from camera flashes.)

Lovely Japanese Dog, Shiba Inu (Mameshiba) Cafe🐶

Mameshiba isn't an official breed but refers to smaller-sized Shiba Inu Dogs.

There's something truly charming about the friendly vibe of Mameshibas🤣🤣

These petite and chubby pups were so adorable. They're generally calm and quiet, expressing their feelings through a variety of cute facial expressions. It was heartwarming when they came to sit on our laps or cuddled up close.

At this Mameshiba cafe, it was fun to see the staff calling the dogs 'cute' more than the customers. The place was relaxed yet lively and vibrant.

There are several Mameshiba cafes around Japan, mostly located near tourist spots. With limited entry to ensure the dogs have space to roam, a 30-minute stay per ticket is the norm, so it's best to plan some sightseeing around your visit👍

We visited the cafe in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, known for its numerous temples. We planned to enjoy some street food but ended up taking an impromptu rickshaw ride. Don't miss our vlog on YouTube!

A Historic Onsen Ryokan with Beautiful Autumn Leaves

We stayed at a ryokan in Izu, Shizuoka Prefecture, where the 'Yoshina Onsen', one of the oldest hot springs in Izu, flows.

While it's gorgeous in every season, the autumn foliage here is truly exceptional! Although famous tourist spots tend to get crowded due to the pleasant climate (Kyoto was packed this fall), this ryokan offers a secluded, private atmosphere.

The building itself was renovated in 2010, blending historic Japanese elements with a modern touch for a comfortable stay. Surrounded by nature, with well-paved roads for safe strolls.

The hospitality of the ryokan staff, especially the landlady, was remarkable, making for a heartwarming experience!

An interesting note: bathing in Yoshina Onsen is said to bring good fortune in childbirth👶

Ginzan Onsen town is a charming and nostalgic hot spring destination in Japan♨️

Everywhere I walked was like a scene from a postcard, and I never got bored of it.

Among several ryokans lined along the river, we stayed at 'Kozankan', a historic inn with its own deep history.

The meals featured local Japanese cuisine, including some famous street foods from the onsen town.

Not only are there separate large public baths for men and women, but also two private onsen baths you can enjoy with your family. The slightly sulfuric hot springs are known for their skin-beautifying properties. It was so relaxing😚

The ryokan retains a traditional feel with very few English signs, but don't worry, the staff's warm hospitality makes up for it. They even use translation devices to help with language barriers.

While the town gets lively with day-trippers during the day, the evenings and mornings are serene and reserved for the staying guests.

Though it's a small town, a day trip can be fulfilling, but staying overnight offers a special experience.

Known for heavy snowfall, Ginzan Onsen is especially popular during the peak snow months of January and February. If you're planning to visit, it's wise to check the ryokan availability and shop timings in advance🫡

Sweets-themed love hotel in Tokyo🍪🍬

The exterior, adorned with delicious-looking cookies and candies, is like a house straight out of a fairy tale!

Not just the exterior, but the rooms too are themed around sweets. We stayed in the largest one, and it was an experience to remember.

Check out our YouTube video for the full experience – it was fun, unique, chaotic, and adorable😂

From the merry-go-round to the candy trees and the sweet-themed benches... everything was so well-crafted, it felt like being in an amusement park.

The bed was huge, meals could be ordered, and there were even karaoke and smart mirrors.

The only downside was having to make a phone call to order meals, but the food was decent and satisfying. The bed was huge, and there were even karaoke and smart mirrors available!

Though you can stay for just a few hours, the facilities are more than enough for a comfortable overnight stay.

It might not be for those seeking a calm or high-quality stay, but perfect for those looking for a unique experience.

Please note, as a love hotel, its primary purpose is for couples to spend romantic time together. Therefore, it's not accessible to those under 18. If you're an adult, you can enter alone, with friends, or in a group. (There's no staff at the reception, but cameras are monitoring.)

A Playful, Private Japanese-Style House Hotel🍡

Located just about 45 minutes from Narita Airport, it's also under an hour to Tokyo Disney Resort. Nestled in a typical residential area, not in the countryside, it might surprise you at first.

The house, over 130 years old, offers more than just a sense of history. The real charm lies in the props that let you transform into a samurai or an oiran. You'll find kimono, replica Japanese swords, and traditional umbrellas, all free for you to touch and take photos with. (But remember, no breaking or taking them home!) Adding the element of 'play' to an ordinary stay makes it an unexpectedly fun experience.

While retaining its Japanese architectural essence, the building is beautifully renovated for comfort. The Japanese-style interior, an open-air cypress bath and sauna, local cuisine, and fluffy futons are just perfect👌. Special touches like underfloor heating, a fire pit, and an irori (traditional hearth) make it a great choice even in colder months.
