Try this upper body sculpt sequence! 

I teach pilates and sculpt. I love teaching sculpt because I can combine my exercise physiology background with pilates to add more weight training moves. 

I taught this in my Pilates sculpt class to start off and it was a great burn. Do 5-10 reps of each exercise.

The other day I went into a pilates class with lower back pain and left with it relieved. 

That’s the power of Pilates! It’s strengthening and rehabilitative. 

Pilates taught me that strength and softness can coexist. That you can be grounded and fluid at the same time.

Shoulder bridge is one of my favorite to get spicy and add several variations. 

The block helps if you have tight hamstrings and helps with proper alignment. 

Although I am using the block to take some tension off my hamstring, it doesn’t take away from the burn of this sequence. 

That heel raise had me 😅 at the end!

Do you use the yoga block in your sequences? 

I did and this one was a burner 🔥

This sequence is sped up, but holding the block between your thighs or valves engages the inner thighs AND the core for a full body activation. 

This is a more advanced sequence that I didn’t fully teach to my students but added on extra for myself.

Why do you have trouble staying consistent with fitness? 

Because, it’s not a priority for you 🤷🏽‍♀️ 

People make the time to do everything else but when it comes to moving your body there is always an obstacle. 

This isn’t about money either. Moving your body can be as simple as walking outside for 10 minutes, doing seated arm raises, doing a quick circuit with household items….anything that you have the ability to do right at home. 

Also, there are so many free things in your city available! 

If you want to be better, make it a priority.

Why do you like Pilates? 

I fell in love with Pilates many years back in my bachelor’s degree program. We had to take a course on how to teach certain modalities and I chose pilates & yoga because of my dancing background. 

That ignited a love that I practiced off and on for years until I decided to make it official and become an instructor.

I shared this on ⏰ but it’s worth bringing it here. 

I am not really a fan of the over use of ankle weights in a true mat pilates class.

I have them and I use them for certain movements more so in a sculpt based class but I honestly hated wearing them for pilates. 

To me, unless you have truly mastered that move you shouldn’t be wearing them. It leads to bad movement patterns, and unnecessary joint pressure. 

As always this is just my opinion, but do what works best for you and your body.

A lot of things are being called Pilates these days, but as a certified instructor here is what I personally look for in the classes I take. 

1. Is the instructor actually certified in Pilates? This is #1  for me. You can really mess up peoples spine! There are several different certifications out there too. As long as the certification is centered in the Joseph Pilates base I am good. 

2. Is the class is mostly pilates based? So with mat pilates you can mix it up and add sculpt. If I go to a class labeled pilates I prefer it to be mostly pilates movement. 

3. The teacher queues breathing and focuses on the spine alignment/ form. Breathwork is a BIG part of Pilates. So is form and spine alignment. It’s important to me the class focuses on that. 

4. Does the class offer variations and progressions? Meaning the class takes a classical move offering different ways to do it and helps you progress to the more difficult move. 

5. Does the class have burpees and squat jumps? For ME I don’t want to see this is a mat pilates class. Pilates is not cardio. I do that separately. Cardio elements are added in sculpt but that’s a different workout. So call it that 🫠

These are the things I personally look for in a true mat Pilates class. I think it’s something that others should look for as well if they really want to learn the method but do what makes you happy!

5 Pilates Myths I’m Tired of Hearing (and the real facts behind them!)

1. “Pilates is just stretching.”

Fact: Pilates builds deep muscular strength, stability, and control. It’s as much strength training as it is mobility work.

2. “You have to be flexible to do Pilates.”

Fact: You might become more flexible by doing Pilates but you don’t need to be flexible to start.

3. “It’s not a real workout.”

Fact: Pilates activates stabilizer muscles most people neglect. It improves core strength, posture, and endurance. You’ll feel the burn!

4. “Pilates is only for women.”

Fact: Pilates was created by a man (Joseph Pilates) and was originally used to train soldiers. It’s for every body.

5. “It’s not effective for weight loss.”

Fact: Yes, Pilates isn’t high-impact cardio, but it builds lean muscle and supports metabolic function, posture, and stress reduction. These are all key for sustainable fat loss.

Here is some deep core work I taught in class today. 

Using the roll up with variations to begin, adding in pre-pilates c-curve,chest lifts, seating leg lifts,criss-cross, modified corkscrew, jackknife, and double straight leg stretch. 

My students felt the burn 🔥 

The ball helps you get deeper in your core muscles and activating those pelvic floor muscles.
