✨ The season is here ✨

October in Mexico is arguably the most beautiful time of year. The country is painted in gold and crimson, with marigolds (cempasúchil) and cockscomb (terciopelo) filling fields, markets, streets and homes all month long. It’s the true beginning of Día de Muertos season. 🧡

FUN FACTS:

🏵️ Mexico produces more than 2 million marigold stems every year just for October and November!

🏵️ In states like Puebla, Morelos, and Oaxaca, fields are planted as early as August so they peak perfectly in October.

🏵️ Atlixco, Puebla, known as the “capital of marigolds,” celebrates with the Festival Valle de Catrinas, where giant catrina sculptures and floral displays fill the town.

Would you take a day trip out of CDMX to find a marigold flower field? 😁 2025-10-01 23:30:47 .. 0 - 27 +24%
🇲🇽 Tonight, Mexico celebrates Independence Day with El Grito, which translates to “the cry” or “the shout of Dolores.”

The historic Grito happened at dawn on September 16, 1810, when Father Miguel Hidalgo rang the church bell in the town of Dolores and called for freedom from Spanish rule. That cry marked the beginning of Mexico’s fight for independence.

The tradition now takes place the night before Independence Day, on September 15 at 11 pm, and the President reenacts El Grito from the National Palace. Plazas across the country echo with ¡Viva México! ¡Viva la Independencia! 🎉

💡Fun fact: Many outside of Mexico confuse this holiday with Cinco de Mayo. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, while September 15 and 16 mark the true birth of a nation.

Did you know that Cinco de Mayo is not the same as Mexican Independence Day? 2025-09-15 20:23:52 .. 0 - 18 -18%
📌 Save this for your future Mexico City visit!

Did you know Castillo de Chapultepec is the only castle in North America that has ever been used as a royal residence? 👑

From 1864 to 1867, Emperor Maximilian I and Empress Carlota lived here, bringing European grandeur to Mexico and leaving behind details like the elegant rooftop garden. In the middle of that garden stands the Caballero Alto tower, first built in 1842 and once used as an observatory for military cadets and early meteorologists.

💡Pro tip: visit right when the castle opens. If you head straight to the 2nd-floor terrace, you’ll usually catch a magical 20-minute window with no crowds (while everyone else is still downstairs). For me, it’s the prettiest part of the entire castle—the tiled floors, the trees of Bosque de Chapultepec framing the terrace, and that perfect view of Altar a la Patria and Paseo de la Reforma in the distance. 🤌🏼

🗓️ Open Tues–Sun, 9am–5pm (closed Mondays)

🎟️ 100 pesos admission (as of Sept 2025). FREE on Sundays for Mexican nationals and foreign residents.

👟 Wear comfy shoes—the walk up the hill to the castle entrance takes about 10 minutes!

Send this to a friend who needs to see Mexico City during Día de Muertos! 🏵️

To experience Mercado Jamaica like this, plan a visit in the final week of October. That’s when the flower trucks from Atlixco, Puebla take over the main parking lot, bringing a special energy to this already magical market.

Cempasúchil (marigolds) guide spirits back with their bright color and scent, while terciopelo rojo (cockscomb) symbolizes love and the blood of life. Together, they’re the heart of the ofrendas created for Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), which is why you’ll see them everywhere throughout this October.

If you visit earlier in the month, you’ll still find plenty of blooms, just without the trucks. Either way, don’t skip this unforgettable market if you’re visiting CDMX during this most beautiful season! ✨

I spent $1,000 for ONE night at bluelagoonis. 🩵 Was it worth it??

I stayed at the Silica Hotel, one of two official on-site hotels. Here’s exactly what I got:

✨ Unlimited access to the hotel’s private lagoon (for guests only), even after checkout. I either had it to myself or shared it with just a few others the whole time.

✨ Showers stocked with Blue Lagoon bath products and hairdryers. This came in clutch after checkout when I still had time for a final soak before heading to the airport.

✨ One premium admission to the Blue Lagoon (includes a robe, 3 face masks and 2 drinks) with no reservation needed.

✨ A spacious hotel room (rare in Iceland) with a private terrace, heated bathroom floors, and more Blue Lagoon skincare in the bathroom.

✨ Free on-demand shuttle to/from main lagoon if you don’t want to walk
✨ Cozy lounge areas, complete with fuzzy blankets
✨ One welcome drink (red, white or sparkling wine)
✨ A delicious breakfast buffet
✨ On-site bluelagoonskincare store with 15% discount
✨ The sweetest staff, they left me a birthday treat in my room!

Was it an over-the-top splurge? Absolutely.
Was it worth it? For me 💯

Would you ever splurge to stay at the Blue Lagoon?

I absolutely LOVED this famous waterfall in Iceland, and that’s saying something because I hate getting wet!

Meet Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall you can actually walk behind. I hope everyone gets a chance to see and do this in their lifetime because it was so incredible. Yes, you’ll get absolutely soaked, but you’ll leave with the biggest smile on your face!

💦 My packing list for Iceland included:
• Waterproof (not resistant!) pants & jacket
• Waterproof boots
• Waterproof gloves
• Travel microfiber towel (to dry off lol)
• Water resistant camera gear (my iPhone and insta360 X3 did great, gopro is another fab choice)

🚫 Leave your umbrella at home! (The wind will destroy it immediately.)

Would you brave a second shower for this waterfall experience? 😁

La Paz is absolutely better with friends! 🥰 Enjoy this better-late-than-never photo dump… and some tips and recs.

🐚 PLAYA BALANDRA
What a dream during low season! The 2 entrance times are still 8am-12pm and 1-5pm, with a limit of 450 visitors at one time. We arrived at 7:40am and nabbed the last free palapa on the beach! (During high season, I had to line up by 6:45am to guarantee my spot, and those free palapas were snatched up quick.) Pack snacks and water, there’s no food vendors here. And if you’re lucky, you might see a puffer fish like we did—say hi to Puff Puff! 🐡

🥾MIRADOR BALANDRA
Bless my girls for hiking 1 hour round trip in 90°F/32°C and suffering through a 500 ft/ 150 m elevation gain to take that drone shot! You know your real friends when. 🥲 If we could do it over, we would have done this hike before Playa Balandra since low season is crazy hot.

⛱️ PLAYA EL TECOLOTE
Head here—specifically to Club De Playa El Tecolote—for lunch after Playa Balandra! They’re the best restaurant on that whole beach, and the servers were top notch. They’ve also got sun loungers and umbrellas to enjoy, so we lounged here for several more hours before calling it a day.

😋 LA PAZ FOOD:
Make sure you grab lunch at vidahbistrolapaz and dinner olivaalmare and azotea_hrp! You won’t regret any of these.

I exhaled the biggest breath and I’m now completely at peace 😌

amomoxtli in Tepoztlán is the kind of hotel you never want to leave. Nestled at the base of Tepozteco Mountain and surrounded by lush greenery, clear air and the sounds of nature, you’ll forget the rest of the world exists. Every corner of the property feels intentional and beautifully designed. It was the perfect escape from CDMX, and it’s definitely going on my “must return ASAP” list! Would you stay here? 🌿

Send this to someone you want to stay at amomoxtli with!

Tucked away in beautiful Tepoztlán, it was like I was staying in heaven on earth. I couldn’t get enough of the seeing the beautiful mountains while laying poolside! There is really something magical and healing about the energy and vibes of this pueblo mágico, and it’s just 1.5 hours outside of Mexico City.

Each morning, the staff dropped off a basket of coffee, tea and cookies, so we didn’t have to rush out of the room for anything. 🥲 When we were ready for real food, complimentary breakfast was waiting for us at the onsite restaurant mesadeorigen —and man oh man, they told us we could pick anything and everything we wanted on the menu!! It was incredible.

By 9am, my friend and I were poolside. It was just us and that magical pool until 11am, when a few other hotel guests finally came to enjoy the sun too. By noon, all the guests were out, but since we went from Sunday-Tuesday (the cheaper days lol) it wasn’t full at all. I only left the pool to enjoy a spa treatment, and though it was quite pricey, it was worth every penny for the splurgey vibe I was going for. 🧖🏻‍♀️

But back to the food: the pool menu was small and absolutely delicious. Always a sucker for guacamole and tuna tostadas, I ordered both and was not disappointed. Dinner back at the restaurant was equally yummy. You could really taste the freshness of all the ingredients!

From check in to check out, the service of Amomoxtli’s staff was top tier. They left little daily gifts for us in the room (chocolates, cookies), did a nightly turn-down service and even had a schedule of free onsite activities (like yoga, meditation and walking tours) to participate in. My friend and I felt properly pampered and cared for the entire time, so much so that we never left the property like we originally planned, lol! I absolutely would return!

So, have I done enough to convince you to add this hotel to your bucket list? 😉

Can jacaranda season please last forever? 🥺🪻

Finally took the photo I imagined for the last 2 years! And for kicks, I’m sharing the behind-the-scenes look at how I got the shot. 🏃🏻‍♀️

You can find this jacaranda-lined street in Bosque de Chapultepec Secc 2. (If you’re Ubering there, set your drop-off location to “Anita’s Burgers.”) There are tons of jacaranda views by the lake, too, so make an afternoon of it. Be sure to also stop by lago_algo for a bite while you’re there!

🧘🏻‍♀️ So grateful to my past self who took care of me, her future self.

If I hadn’t planned ahead for a worst-case scenario, I would have been absolutely panicked when my bag was stolen. (See my last post if you somehow missed that story.)

But because I had planned ahead, all I needed to get through the stressful scenario was in a safe place, waiting for me. I’m copy/pasting my tips because it’s REALLY important to be ready for anything:

👉🏼 Have a backup phone at home *just* in case! I was so glad I didn’t sell my old iPhone 14 after upgraded to the 16 Pro last year. I was able to charge it up and get AT&T to move my e-sim off my stolen phone and back onto the old 14 model. This saved me SO much stress knowing I still had access to my primary phone number and a fully funcional smartphone while I wait for my replacement 16 Pro to be delivered.

👉🏼 Always buy a phone protection plan that includes theft & loss! (If you’re a frequent traveler or live in a big city, that is.) I was so happy I paid extra for this coverage. It cost me $129 to replace stolen 16 Pro, and all I had to do was describe in detail what happened. Didn’t even need to show a police report or anything! It took 5 minutes to file a claim.

👉🏼 Keep a spare credit card at home. I was lucky that I had this backup card since my stolen ones were immediately locked after the outrageous fraud attempts the thieves made.

Thank you, again, for all the support when I shared my original story. 🩷 There will be no further follow-ups about this. My only agenda was to remind everyone to stay alert and make smart choices, no matter where you live and travel to, and I think I’ve done that.

#theftprevention 2025-04-03 03:08:48 .. 0 - 10 -54%
⚠️ My bag got stolen, don’t let it happen to you!

❗️UPDATE 4/5: The thief was arrested! But please continue to make smart choices and learn from my experience.❗️

———
I’ve lived in Mexico City for 3 years and other big cities before this, and I KNOW better than to make myself an easy target. But yesterday, I was too complacent and made some bad judgement calls that led to my purse being taken.

Inside my stolen bag were my phone, credit cards, some cash, Mexican ID, sunglasses, and other small material things. Everything was replaceable, but it was a definite headache trying to sort it all out.

My biggest tips:

👉🏼 Don’t hang your bag on the back of your chair, especially if you’re seated outside. Better to keep wearing it crossbody or have it in your lap.

👉🏼 If you have a choice of outdoor tables, try to pick one that isn’t close to the street, where anyone can walk up/stand behind you without you knowing.

👉🏼 Be aware of your surroundings, don’t get so immersed in your laptop (or phone) like I was!

👉🏼 Have a backup phone at home *just* in case! I was so glad I didn’t sell my old iPhone 14 after upgraded to the 16 Pro last year. I was able to charge it up and get AT&T to move my e-sim off my stolen phone and back onto the old 14 model. To be clear, this kind of theft can happen anywhere, not just CDMX. And I still adore this city! But I wanted to share my experience for awareness. Don’t make the mistakes I did!

Meet Chimalistac, the most peaceful and beautiful colonia of Mexico City that you’ve never heard of. 🪻🌺🌿

Tucked in between San Ángel and Coyoacán, this quiet neighborhood is a true hidden gem that should not be missed if you have a few hours to spare. The area actually has a rich history dating back to the Aztec era, and 12 of its buildings (built between the 17th and 19th centuries) are recognized as historical monuments by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). In 2012, the City declared the neighborhood a part of the city’s heritage.

I highly recommend a photo walk here: Start at Parque de La Bombilla to see Monumento a Álvaro Obregón (built in 1935), then walk west or south into the quiet residential neighborhood. As you weave through the cobbled streets and alleys, your jaw will drop at the stunning stately mansions, fountains, parks, flowering vines and bridges of yesteryear. There used to be a river here (called Magdalena River), but it was piped in 1935. Even still, the bridges remain in tact, a lovely nod to its history.

Aside from the beauty of this colonia, the thing that struck me the most was the *quiet*. If you’ve ever been to CDMX, you know that it is an incredibly loud city. But being in Chimalistac was like being transported to a whole other world, one of absolute serenity. Leave your headphones at home, perhaps even pack a picnic lunch, and enjoy the sounds of the birds chirping and leaves rustling in the wind.

With all the jacarandas blooming, now (March) is the prettiest time to visit this colonia! Will you be adding Chimalistac to your CDMX itinerary?

How lucky am I to call Mexico City my home? 💜✨

I’ve said it hundreds of times already, but you HAVE to visit CDMX in March to see the city covered with jacaranda blooms! The first sightings of purple sprigs usually come mid-February, and the trees hit peak bloom by mid-March—aka NOW! If you’re coming in the first half of April, you’ll catch the tail end of the season.
