I became a coach because having my own coach was the only thing that helped me get my health back and lose and sustain an 80lbs weight loss naturally.

Karen is a powerhouse, no doubt, but she wasn’t without her share of life altering challenges.

Her husband died unexpectedly a few years ago.
She was diagnosed with cancer and she suffered a debilitating back injury that required back fusion surgery.

On top of that, she had to relocate her entire life while going through all of this.

If you want to hear the entire story, her episode is now live.

Drop ‘POWERHOUSE’ in the comments and I’ll send you the full YouTube video.

This is a story that should inspire you and motivate you to see you are not alone.

And that it is possible to get through very difficult times and still persevere.

Much Love and gratitude to straightenyour.crown for choosing me as her coach over 2 years ago and letting me share her story 🙏

FUN FACT: Did you know I was born in the country that invented the dreaded Bulgarian Split Squat? 🤪

I’m 50% Armenian and 50% Bulgarian.

The country also borders on another highly dreaded move called the Turkish Get Up! 🤣

And the neighbors to the North invented the Romanian Deadlifts! 😘

And I recently found out that Armenia’s most popular sport is weight lifting. They actually came up with the Armenian Sitting Press. We call it a seated shoulder press. 🫶

So it’s safe to say - this runs in my blood!

And - I FEEL IT! Nothing feels better than being exactly where you belong! 🫶🙏

Thank you Universe!

The amount of noise and nonsense out there has exponentially exploded. So many distractions. Oh my goodness. Do this. Do that. Buy this. Buy that.

We have so much ‘stuff’ nowadays.
We buy products and never use them.
If we don’t get on the latest ‘trend’ - we feel out of the loop.

But you know what, my favorite clothing brand is a tiny little country general store in the middle of a hike that has unbranded unknown t-shirts and sweatshirts.

I have 1 pair of sneakers. Unknown brand of leggings I can’t even pronounce. I don’t remember the last time I bought a purse. I wear the same one all the time. Can’t remember the last time I bought shoes. I mostly walk around barefoot. And my favorite brand is IDGAF. lol
I like not wearing makeup the majority of the week.
Even my nails are bare most of the time.

And I don’t feel ‘any less’

I’m quite happy not doing these things. lol

So if you are here for the latest Amazon haul or some other product or injectable miracle solution you want me to ‘share’/ sell you - move along. I’m not into that. I don’t even take advil and my worst nightmare of ‘having fun’ is a shopping mall. 🤷‍♀️

I’m busy living life.
Growing as a human being.
Hanging out with my kids.
Playing with my dog.
Practicing my craft and encouraging you to stop spending your money on plastic landfill shit that you won’t use or wear. Or worse, something that can give you life threatening side effects.

And it’s not because I don’t receive the solicitations from companies to do so. There are at least 3-4 new offers in my inbox every day. And they all promise ‘big bucks’. 🙄

It’s because I’m here to breathe with you.
Hold your hand.
Inspire you to move your body.
Eat better.
Get stronger.
And embrace the stage of life you are in.
And I’m not a big fan of the internet. 🤷‍♀️

People often ask me WHY?

Why do you work so hard?
Because I know poverty. There were times all I could afford was hot dogs and Ramen noodles.

Why do you train so hard?
Because I know obesity.

Why do you avoid alcohol?
Because I know alcoholism. As a victim and as a user.

Why do you study so much?
Because I know the result of ignorance.

Why do you protect your boundaries and heart?
Because I know grief and betrayal intimately.

Why do you never take a day off?
Because I know failure.

Why are you always dancing & being goofy?
Because I know mental illness and every happy moment counts.

How do you stay consistent in all this?
Because I never want to know all these things again if I can avoid them.

But they will show up again and again. That is life.

And that’s why I keep showing up.

So I can be strong enough to face them.

Keep fighting friends!

Never in a million years would I have believed it was possible when I first started.

When I felt hopeless.
Desperate.
Out of control.

Nothing seemed possible.

Only thing that kept me going was relentless ‘knowing’ the younger version of me at 31 - wasn’t right.

It wasn’t how it was supposed to be.

No matter how many times I was told to get used to it.
That it was my genetics, that aging does ‘this’, that it’s normal.

A part of me knew it wasn’t true.

My intuition always knew.

I listened.

Sometimes unwillingly and resentfully.

But I did.

Thank you to that inner knowing.

Thank you for showing me the way.

You were right.

Lifters: want more PRs with fewer aches?

Add yoga + Pilates.

Strong muscles need mobile joints and rock-solid control.

Here’s why these two are non-negotiable for strength athletes:

Usable mobility:

Yoga builds end-range flexibility so squats, presses, and pulls hit depth without compensations.

Tendon + fascial health:

Slow, controlled stretches and loaded lengthening improve tissue glide and reduce “sticky” ranges.

Core + breath mechanics:

Pilates drills 360° breathing and deep core (diaphragm, TA, pelvic floor) → better bracing, safer heavies.

Balance & proprioception:

Single-leg + rotational control improves bar path, landing mechanics, and change of direction.

Recovery nervous system:

Downshifts you into parasympathetic mode so you actually absorb your training.

Ideally, you want a mix because each type of movement offers unique benefits.

- Resistance Training: Builds and preserves lean muscle, boosts metabolism, strengthens bones, and supports hormone balance (especially important in midlife).

- Cardio: Improves heart health, endurance and helps with mental clarity.

- Walking: Low-impact, restorative, and great for daily movement plus it supports fat metabolism and recovery from tougher workouts.

- Yoga: Enhances flexibility, mobility, balance, and nervous system regulation; reduces stress hormones.

- Pilates: Strengthens deep core muscles, improves posture, and helps with joint stability.

Bottom line:

If your goal is strength, longevity, and overall health — resistance training should be your foundation (2–4x/week), complemented by walking daily, cardio 1–2x/week and yoga or Pilates for mobility and recovery.

The right balance will depend on your goals, schedule, and current fitness level, but no single method replaces the benefits of the others. 🤷‍♀️

No dumbbells? Use a water jug or water bottles.

No barbell? Use a backpack filled with water bottles.

No shoes? Go barefoot.

No athletic wear? Do it in work clothes or pajamas.

No cardio equipment? Jump around for 10 mins.

None of it matters.

What matters is that you do it despite things not being perfect.

There is a magical component to consistency:

Both in movement, mindset and nutrition.

The body & mind both like predictability.

They like boring routines. Structure.

And they like to be challenged physically and nourished properly with a simple strategy.

We complicate it all by overthinking it all. By falling for all the commercialism and over consumption of the modern world.

How do we change this?

We start by saying ‘no’.

Because simplicity is the magic we are truly looking for.

And freedom is the reward.

Not gonna lie. The road hasn’t been easy. There’ve been lots of bogeyman on the path to this freedom of IDGAF!

And each one was battled individually.

One at a time.

But there is nothing more satisfying than being the one to outlast and outsmart them all.

BMI is like using a bathroom scale to measure your intelligence.

It’s a blunt tool.

A lean strength-trained woman with visible abs and strong glutes could have the same BMI as a sedentary person with high body fat and poor metabolic health.

What is more accurate?

Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) is simple, science-backed, and far more accurate for identifying health risks - especially in midlife, when hormone shifts make where fat is stored far more important than how much fat you carry.

Waist-to-hip ratio is calculated by dividing waist circumference (smallest part of the waist) by hip circumference (widest part of the hips).

WHR = Waist / Hips

What’s a Healthy WHR?

Women: ≤ 0.85
Men: ≤ 0.90

👉 Higher = more visceral fat = higher health risk

During perimenopause and menopause:

Estrogen declines, and fat storage shifts from hips/thighs to the abdomen.

A woman’s BMI might stay the same, but her waist circumference may increase - meaning her disease risk goes up even if her weight hasn’t changed.

Visceral fat (fat around the organs, concentrated in the abdomen) is far more dangerous than subcutaneous fat stored around the hips and thighs.

A study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2010) found that 29% of individuals classified as “normal weight” by BMI were metabolically unhealthy, meaning BMI missed early disease risk in a significant portion of the population.

Things I see when training women & why we are often EMBARASSED to brace properly

1. Social Conditioning: “Suck in, Look Slim”
From a young age, we are taught to “hold in your stomach” for posture and appearance.

This becomes a habit - even during training - leading to a chronic underuse of proper diaphragmatic breathing & bracing.

2. Fear of “Looking Bigger”
We often associate belly expansion with fat gain, bloating, or pregnancy.

So the idea of purposefully pushing the belly out in a gym full of mirrors & people? VERY uncomfortable, right? Even threatening to our body image.

3. Shame + Misunderstanding
We associate firm, flat abs with core strength. But strength & flatness are not the same.

Trainers who haven’t explained the function over form of bracing contribute to confusion.

Especially if cues like “engage your core” are misinterpreted as “suck it in” — WHICH THEY OFTEN ARE!

Best way I can describe it — you should feel like you are about to sneeze — “Ahhhchooo.... “ and then hold that tension in your core while still allowing yourself to breathe. :)

4. Pelvic Floor Dysfunction + Misguided Cues
Many women with stress incontinence, diastasis recti, or prolapse are told to “draw in” their abs to protect the core - which is appropriate in rehab but not sufficient for lifting heavy.

Without re-education, we stay stuck using underpowered strategies.

What Should Be Taught Instead IMHO

🥫Core = Canister

Think of your torso like a soda can: diaphragm on top, pelvic floor on the bottom, and abdominals around the sides.

Bracing pressurizes the can. Sucking in crumples it.

You want to pressurize and expand it so it can protect your spine during compound lifts.

❤️Normalize the Look

A protruding belly during a lift is a sign of power, not weakness.

I teach women: “You’re not bloated, you’re braced. That’s your strength showing.”

💯Performance First

Strong bracing = better lifts, fewer injuries, more confidence.

Want a flat stomach? Get strong & build muscle—it starts with proper bracing mechanics, not chronic abdominal tension. Save that for the IG posing videos and your little black dress. Not the gym.

Great conversation on thekellfireshow with Dr Kelly Barron! Stay tuned for the full episode.

If you’re training for longevity, disease prevention, and resilience - not just aesthetics - then compound, load-bearing strength training is non-negotiable.

Bicep curls are fun. But they won’t save your spine, stabilize your gait or preserve your independence in your 70s and beyond.

👉 Brute raw strength is not just about lifting heavy.

It’s about lifting your future self out of fragility.

Compound exercises like squats, deadlifts, hip thrusts, RDLs and presses recruit multiple muscle groups, joints, and energy systems at once.

This forces neurological, muscular, cardiovascular, and hormonal adaptations - which isolated curls do not match.

Heavy (for you) compound lifts stimulate large muscle groups, which means greater release of anabolic and protective hormones like:

- Testosterone
- Growth Hormone (GH)
- Insulin-like Growth Factor-1

These hormones decline with age and are associated with muscle decline, bone loss and cognitive decline when insufficient.

Load-bearing exercises impose mechanical stress on bones, triggering osteoblast activity and increasing bone mineral density - critical for preventing osteoporosis.

In essence, brute raw strength is about building a foundation of overall power and functional movement.

Isolated strength allows for targeting muscle development and addressing weaknesses or imbalances in the body and refining your physique.

🫶 A well rounded training program should include both.
