![I wouldn’t say I was a BIG risk taker… BUT I do love a good bend in the road. I design to keep things timeless and true to what I love, and that sometimes means nudging the rulebook rather than shredding it.
This week I had the pleasure of speaking with co-founder Rob at coatpaints 5th birthday and we got into what risks we take in our projects. The risks I take aren’t loud or dramatic, they’re subtle shifts or little detours that push the work toward individuality, joy, and lasting appeal. I chase what endures, not what’s flashy in the moment, and I believe design should feel like a conversation you’re having with the future. So I break the rules with intention, never with abandon, because fun is a signal, not an afterthought. If it makes the work sing and it helps our client to feel at home, I say it’s a small rebellion worth making.

![I’m letting you in on one of my favourite design features.
And that is panelling on ceilings - the forgotten fifth wall. I know I don’t half harp on about panelling at House Nine - because it does all the things, adds architectural interest, frames a space, even gives low ceilings a sense of purpose but it really does help to frame the space below and zone open plan spaces.

Relieved because peace at last and a break from refereeing and hearing MUMMMMY called at me circa 800 times a day.
Nostalgic because of the precious time just had in watching them literally grow in front of me.

![Amidst relentless blockades and brutal attacks, the innocent men, women, and children of Gaza are dying from hunger. It’s heartbreaking beyond words to see mothers cradling their starving children, absolutely helpless to help.
Depriving an entire people of basic human rights and forcing them to risk their lives just to find food is an unforgivable moral failure and a crime. This is an urgent cry for humanity, not a matter of blame.
The suffering in Gaza is a tragic result of missed chances for peace. But right now, what matters most is that innocent lives are being torn apart. We cannot turn away or remain silent.
As someone who dedicates my life to creating beauty and comfort in homes, I am devastated to see homes destroyed, families living in terror, and children starving, all while the world looks on.
This is beyond war. It’s a heartbreaking collapse of our shared humanity.

![This weeks hot topic “How LOW can you GO?” - to have those beautiful arch doors you all love so much?!
Well the good news is that you CAN still rock stunning arch doors even if your ceilings are on the cosy side. For that classic “true arch”, a minimum ceiling height of over 250 centimeters (about 8 feet) is considered ideal. The wider the door, the higher the ceiling will need to be. However, you can achieve beautiful arches in spaces as low as 220 centimetres (around 7 feet).
The trick is to keep the arch shallow and proportionate to the height of your ceiling, which creates a balanced and elegant effect without overwhelming the space. Whether you opt for a partial arch aka ‘the squashed arch’, a gentle curve or a semi-arch, it’s all about customising the design to fit your room’s height for a seamless, elegant, swoon worthy entrance.

![One thing I pride myself on over here at H9, is that we strive to create Client-centric designs. Simply put, we put our clients needs, wants and preferences at the very centre of our design process. A home should reflect a personality and ooze character and soul and this home sure does just that.
pollyanna_wilkinson brief was - “Give me colour, but make it timeless. It must be functional and hardwearing but not boring. And of course, it must hold hands with the outside, not clash or fight.

![I’m about to tell you something - that is going to come as absolutely no surprise.
I blooming love an arch. Big ones, small ones. Tall ones, short ones. They bring a touch of elegance and playfulness by softening hard edges, creating eye-catching focal points, and making spaces feel more connected and inviting. Whether classic or modern, arches make any space more stylish, harmonious, and just that little bit more fun!
Looking back at past projects where we have cut this shape. And you better believe, of course they are on future project drawing boards.

![Before pics, project Ham House. We are properly underway and it’s a BIG one. Like, six bedrooms wrapped around a whopper of a staircase cascading down the middle like something out of a Nancy Meyers fever dream big…We’re talking layers of history, charm, and some seriously retro wallpaper that’s doing the most in these before shots (here’s where you tell me you secretly love it 😂).
This place has bones, and we’re here to give it a new lease of life - gently, thoughtfully, and with a big old dose of House Nine character.

![Take a little scroll with me around the kitchen dining area of our Ziggy Rocks kitchen in Somerset.
The open plan setup here was all about flow and warmth - a space fit for both family and friends and anyone else who came knocking.
We played with texture and tone to keep things calm and inviting, soft oak flooring, zellige tiled backsplash, and layered lighting that flatters even when you’re reheating leftovers or nursing a hangover.
Both important considerations in any House Nine design.

![Last week, my little girls turned 5 and 7 - and I am overwhelmed with love and gratitude I feel for them... Not to mention the sheer exhaustion and hair pulling - both mine and theirs, but let’s leave that small detail out for now… They are my greatest teachers, the absolute loves of my life. The lights that brighten my dark days, my pride and joy in every sense of the word. Especially of late.
They give me the strength to question everything, to do better, to be better, to work harder. They inspire me every day to help shape a kinder, more compassionate world.
Watching them grow reminds me of the purest form of love and the powerful responsibility I have to lead by example. I am forever grateful for these beautiful cheeky tenacious souls.]()

![One of the best feelings in the world - to hand over a finished project to a Client. Especially when they cry - call me sadistic, but those happy tears are pure liquid gold.
But behind every great project is a team of (exhausted) designers - and I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. I couldn’t do any of it without my brilliantly talented, kind and hilariously fun team. I love you all SO damn much and am so grateful for your hard work and for making House Nine what it is and for making what I do that bit easier and a whole lot more enjoyable. Hasn’t been the easiest of life lately’s, Father’s Day was a toughy. But helped along hugely by immersing myself in work, time spent with good friends and searching for the signs wherever I go. Starting to feel more myself than I have in a while.
