- For years (9 to be exact), I rented my home staging inventory from 2 furniture rental companies. I had my own inventory of rugs, artwork, accessories, bedding, etc. Working with furniture rental companies was actually very educational, because I learned a lot about furniture delivery and what furniture did and didn't work for home staging. Not being able to select and purchase my own furniture inventory was very limiting, but I made it work because, well, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Well, it got broke. One of the furniture rental companies brought in a new manager. He decided that, even though I was giving them $200,000 of business per year, he wanted more. He eliminated my discounts, raised the cost of delivery to above market rates, and wanted me to be exclusive to their company. He got greedy and killed the goose that laid the golden egg. I realized that this company had too much power over my profitability. The next day, I went to a local bank and got a small business loan. I started looking for a large enough warehouse to store the inventory I would need. Within a week, I had found an 8,000 SF warehouse. I was ready to rock and roll. I never rented furniture again. I started buying inventory like a mad woman. I found a few local wholesale vendors who would sell to a "new" home staging company. I went to the Las Vegas Market with todd.mcallister.79 and tagged along as he & ryanmarsh56 placed their market orders. I opened accounts at any wholesale vendor that would have me as a customer (at that time most wholesale vendors hadn't caught on to how much money they could make selling to home stagers). I filled up that 8,000SF warehouse lickety-split. And I made a lot of mistakes. I bought furniture house by house. If a house had a purple wall, I bought a purple sofa. If a house had a massive family room, I bought a massive sectional that wouldn't fit anyplace else. SO.MANY.MISTAKES. Now, 9 years in to buying wholesale, I've learned a great deal about what to buy, how to buy it & who to buy it from. I created an online class to teach others what I've learned & how not to make the mistakes I've made. Link in comments.
