Poppyfields 2.0: after a few weeks of finalizing the interior floor plans on our Altadena rebuild, I took our clients to walkyourplansla to walk through the life-sized drawings. I’ve noticed that all of our clients have trouble visualizing how new floor plans will work, but especially on a new build where the structure doesn’t exist yet, I love being able to offer this new service. NEW PROJECT 🚨: Rebuilding Poppyfields ❤️ Four years ago, Tiff and Dave were some of the first clients to hire me who I didn’t actually know personally. sagradastudio didn’t even exist yet! I was still finding my voice as a designer and they had just closed on a beautiful old Tudor in Altadena that they wanted to make into a home for their family of 4. I have no idea why they trusted me with this project, but we had so much fun together and so many laughs. Their daughter Tessa helped me put all those constellation stickers into the little reading nook, and it was my first time designing so much custom millwork. Dave got his Eames chair. Tiff and I picked out the rust sofa together for her office. We discovered the artwork of jasondemeo and got two pieces for the living room. Sadly, the house did not survive the Eaton fire, but they are trusting me again to help them rebuild what I am hoping will be the most beautiful modern Spanish home on the block. It is my privilege to be a part of their new chapter and help them get back home. I don’t care what the budget is, high or low, I genuinely love a plug-in sconce! There are just some spaces where clients don’t want to commit to the hardwire and a traditional lamp isn’t right. There are so many good options out there now, so when dominomag asked me to tell them about an all-time favorite decorating item of mine, this had to be it. I love visiting artist’s studios, and this month for our sagradastudio team outing we got to hang with the incredibly talented samklemick and take a peek around lawoodshop (IYKYK). Sam and I have apparently been checking each other out for a while and it was so inspiring to hear her story…she too, used to work in fashion and ALSO has a Miami connection like me. Her pieces in person are actual works of art, except there’s a heft and sturdiness to them so you aren’t afraid to actually use them. She knows how to make an heirloom. Little joys lately that were free or barely cost anything, because the economy is in shambles and spending a lot feels irresponsible, but I still like nice things and experiences. My favorite bougie ice cream, watching my kids swim in my mom’s pool, a walk by the water with my husband, and family time at Top Golf. And time at the beach. Wine. Also, luxury bath and home products, because all you need is one good-smelling thing and it improves your day, every day, for like weeks and sometimes months. Oh and after strolling the book store I decided to re-read the Surrender Experiment because it always resets my perspective. Also I happen to love fireworks, so I went to watch them on 4th of July. I’ve tried coworking and it’s just not my thing. I think it feels too much like being in the law school library again which is obvs traumatizing. The design of our L.A. studio was an experiment in how many ways we could use birch plywood, breeze blocks, butcher block and other affordable materials to create a functional, warm and on-brand workspace for our team. I gave the overall brief, and emthomsen_ smritipoudell made the design happen so it really was a sagradastudio team collaboration just like everything else we do. So much overthinking about limewash out there! Just do it. Stop overthinking. It’s going to come out great. And if it doesn’t, just fix it. Paint over it. Do another coat. Meta memories reminded me that exactly a year ago I was vacationing at the carnerosresort in Napa, a place I love and try to visit annually. Many years ago when I was a very young attorney and hadn’t been to Napa yet, a client told me that if I ever did go, the Carneros was the best place to stay, period.
