I really wanted to love this property…and I did at first. But here’s why we won’t be returning and why it may not be the right stay for you with your dog: 1. The restaurant service was horrendous & the menu is overpriced for the quality of food. I do think this experience was so bad because of our server, which is unfortunate but we both left hungry. 2. All the dog-friendly rooms are on the ground floor (love), and because there’s no AC we kept our windows open. Still ok. But because of the properties location there is a lot of wildlife on the grounds and Rue just about ran into a deer during an evening potty break. Because they were so close to our room, she continued to smell them throughout the night b/c of the open windows and therefore would not settle the entire night. 3. Our sleep was also an issue because not all of our windows in our room had coverings, so the lights from the grounds were pouring in all night and I was desperately wishing I had brought an eye mask (or that they provided one like they did ear plugs). Let’s talk packing! 🧳 Packing always feels like the most stressful part of traveling. Do I have everything I need, what if I run out of XYZ, is it going to rain…? I got tired of feeling like I was always forgetting something or creating different lists based on the type of trip we were taking, sooo I made the ultimate packing list. A Google sheet that lists anything and everything I need to pack no matter the dog-friendly adventure. I can filter the sheet by adventure type (think beach, glamping, etc.), sort by human and hound items, check a box when an item has been packed, and it’ll even track my packing progress by bag. How to spend a dog-friendly day in Mendocino (with timestamps) 📌 🏕️ Wake up at mendocino_grove & enjoy breakfast at your glampsite or the complimentary light breakfast at The Meadow Commons 🐾 Hit the dog park and walk the trail around the property to start your morning 🛶 The trail connects to a path you walk down to the river to rent an outrigger from Catch a Canoe to spend some time on the water (and maybe see some wildlife) 🧼 After your water adventure it’s time to get cleaned up back at the wash station at Mendocino Grove and enjoy lunch at your glampsite 🥾 Then head north to Ruassian Gulch State Park to walk the coastal trail and take in the amazing views of the Mendocino Coast and the Russian Gulch Bridge 🚂 Then hop aboard the Skunk Train for a scenic ride into the redwood forest. You can stay as long as you’d like at Glen Blair. Treat yourself to some souvenirs at dogdogcattahoe in Heavenly Village Get on the water. The shoreline tour through clearlytahoe is dog-friendly but they do have a weight restriction for pups, so if you have a bigger dog grab a rental in town or find one at a local beach area. It’ll be just as fun! Enjoy the patio at azul_latin_kitchen for lunch. We never skip having a meal here when we visit and if you’re a vegetarian the queso and sweet potato tacos are delish 😋 Take some time to relax back at your hotel. desolationhotel is our fav luxury option, but there are so many hotels in the area to choose from for any budget. Dine inside with your dog at Jimmy’s at The Landing. The menu is a bit upscale and so yummy. They even have a pup menu and welcome dogs inside. Take in a sunset on the lake. One of my favorite spots is Cave Rock. How is it already August?! Anyone else feel like summer has just flown by extra fast this year?💨I’m obviously excited to be another month closer to 🍂🎃, but I’d like time to slow down a bit. July was a mixed bag of highs and lows for us. Hbu? 🎉 I celebrated another year around the sun 🏨 We crossed a new dog-friendly property off our list and visited an area of CA we haven’t been before, but our 4-day visit became a 2-day one with Rue refusing to eat every single meal. 📸 I got a new toy [fujifilmx_us x100vi] 🏡 The weather was abnormally mild in the Bay Area & we took full advantage of our outdoor space at home 🚤 Rue got to play captain as we cruised around Richardson Bay in Sausalito ❤️‍🩹 Rue and I probably had our worst months to date - she’s been experiencing a lot of appetite issues, the appetite stimulant made her sick, and her rollercoaster of good and bad days has had my stress at an all time high where I’ve felt like I can’t do anything else but focus on her every hour of the day. Which one are you adding to your list? 🏨🐶✨ When traveling with your dog, lodging can make or break the trip. These properties feel like a destination in themselves and have been a part of some wonderful memories with Ruby. 1. cavallopoint [Sausalito, CA] - This property lives rent free in my brain. The views are epic. There is so much greenspace with dog-friendly trails around the property. And the on-site restaurant is delicious and has a pup menu! 2. postcardcabins [Running Springs, CA] - A wonderful property to truly disconnect and reconnect with another. Rue loved watching nature from the big window and was so zen being immersed in nature (but still with all the amenities of staying at a hotel). 3. mendocino_grove [Mendocino, CA] - Another wonderful property to immerse yourself in nature. Rue is such an outdoor dog and truly loved sleeping in a tent (in a cozy bed ofc) and wondering around the redwood filled property. The grounds also have a fenced in dog area (perfect for potty breaks) and a dog wash that was used a few times after our adventures. 4. sanctuarybeachresort [Marina, CA] - Probably our top stay in 2024. If you’re dog loves the beach, then staying in a beachfront cottage where your dogs paws immediately hit the sand when you step outside your door is going to be their favorite thing. They even have a fancy pup menu and a stick library! 5. dawnranch [Guerneville, CA] - I loved this property for the cozy, elevated design and the easy access to the Russian River. The cottages can be a bit small, so it might not be as cozy if you’re traveling with a bigger dog, but Rue approved of the private deck attached to our cottage and all the greenspace and redwood smells. 6. autocamp Yosemite [Midpines, CA] - One of the best property locations in the area for visiting Yosemite National Park. The airstreams have elevated amenities which I appreciate and each one has their own outdoor patio space, which was Rue’s favorite spot to hang out. Any others you’d add to the list? 🐶🧳🚘 Things to know when traveling with your dog — 1) Dog-friendly travel requires a lot of extra stuff. I gave up on being a light packer a long time ago in preference of being prepared for anything. I always want Rue to have the comforts of home, so she travels with her own suitcase now. 2) Many dogs love car rides so don’t forget the journey to your destination is just as fun for them! 3) Snacks are mandatory when traveling and should always be handy. I have a stasherbag filled with treats on me at all times. (Water too!) 4) Rue always inspects where we’re staying as soon as we arrive and claims her spot on the bed before we’ve even unloaded the car 😆 5) No one likes messes at home and the same goes for when you’re traveling. We keep paw cleaner in the car and by the door of where we’re staying at all times. 6) A travel mat is the perfect companion for anywhere you need your dog to settle. It provides a spot that’s a familiar “place” for them and it protects them from anything gross on the ground. We have one in every car and I pack it when we fly - it’s perfect for patios, planes, Ubers, etc. 7) Dogs like routine and maintaining their daily schedule for meals, potty time, exercise, etc. is key to keeping them call and comfortable when visiting a new place. 8) traveling with your dog makes trips so much more fun.
