![After multiple failures I finally finished refurbishing this vintage mid century modern desk!
To remove the original finish and terrible orange wood stain, I used acetone. Which ended up being a huge mistake. I scrubbed with steel wool, a stainless steel wire brush, and all the elbow grease my little arms have. The lacquer kind of just redistributed and hardened, making it more difficult than if I would have simply not used acetone at all. So um… yeah, maybe don’t use acetone.
Then I used my SKIL power sander (ironic, considering I clearly don’t have the SKILL). I started with 220 grit because literally everyone told me to… it took days. Then I went in with 120 grit but that still was not enough. I NEEDED MORE!!
Then I went in with KleanStrip. Just winging it, ya know? And that was a goopy mess.
Back at it with the sander, but this time more abrasive with 80 grit. But the lacquer was not having it.
So I tried CitriStrip. Original flavor of course. And that ended up hardening again because I left it on too long. I forgot, okay?! It also kind of stained it darker which was worrisome lol.
Power sander enters the chat yet again. 60 grit this time, and it WORKED!
I used Minwax wood filler to try to fill the broken edges of the desk corners. I could have done a better job but I just wanted it to be over at that point. I was honestly ready to just give the desk back to the woman I bought it from. Once that dried I sanded that down.
I then used Minwax pre-stain wood conditioner, but forgot to film that part. Once that set, I applied the Minwax wood stain (Early American). Then I sealed the deal with polyurethane.
I got some new drawer handles and a new lease on life!
All that to say, I learned so much along the way and couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!
