The Japanese toilet experience is unmatched…🚽 The TOTO Museum is located in Kitakyushu where the company is based and they opened the museum to celebrate 100 years of TOTO in 2017. From the first modern toilet to the famous TOTO Washlet we all know and love, this is a genuinely interesting allbeit bizarre, museum to visit. It’s free to visit and you can get souvenirs and even try out their latest toilet model which costs $10,000 USD and is installed in their public restrooms in the museum - yes, even the public toilets are a museum feature 😂 It’s one of the best things to do in Kitakyushu and it’s an easy day trip from Fukuoka to Kitakyushu by train or Shinkansen. This is my FAVOURITE time of year to travel - shoulder seasons are perfect for fewer crowds, better prices and temperatures that aren’t so hot in Europe! Are you planning to travel in October or November this year? Here are some October and November travel ideas. Beat the crowds and the heat by travelling to Croatia, Italy, Spain, Portugal and popular Greek Islands and the Canary Islands in October! November means flights stop running to most Greek Islands but the Canary Islands are great year-round option. Both October and November are great for Europe city breaks without the stifling heat but before Christmas market prices kick in! New England is of course a great option for autumn foliage in the USA, while that’s usually early-mid October, Japan is a great option for seeing autumn colours throughout November and even into December when you travel further south Iceland’s high season is summer, so October/November means less crowds, lower prices but a chance to see northern lights as the nights get darker and a mix of the summer and winter tour options. For further afield, Australia and New Zealand are heading into late spring/summer during October/November so it’s a great time if you need some warm weather. Thailand is another great option as the weather improves in Oct/Nov after the rainy season! Would you do this? This was on a tour to the Cu Chi Tunnels in Vietnam on a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City. These are part of the huge network of tunnels used by the VietCong during the Vietnam War and let me tell you, getting inside them was terrifying. As well as climbing in one of these holes, we also crawled through a 100m section of the tunnels (I absolutely DO NOT recommend if you're claustrophobic). As a very tall 6'2/188cm woman, I struggled immensely to crawl through. The Viet Cong were much smaller and often only weighed around 40kg. They lived their lives in these tunnels, evading, fighting, trapping and capturing the enemy during the war. I learned so so much during this trip, it was both harrowing and eye opening and I highly recommend this day trip if you're visiting HCMC. Obviously Bukchon Hanok village is a popular spot in Seoul, but everyone flocks to this ONE STREET and there’s so much more to the area than that… Right behind the famous street viewpoint, turnaround and head to the Bukchon Oriental Culture Museum, tickets cost 6000 won and include a free drink in the cafe with this incredible view of the rooftops and Seoul city skyline House of Baek Inje - a couple of minutes walk from the famous viewpoint is this free heritage museum which is a stunningly preserved hanok and gardens. I am so firmly of the belief that you do not need to get on a plane to travel. You don’t even need to go far from home. Travel is about new experiences, opening yourself up to new places, new people, new sights or cultural experiences. Obviously getting on a plane is fun and exciting, but it’s also not practical, possible, affordable or accessible for everyone. I started a UK travel website during the pandemic because it opened my eyes to the adventures that were right on my doorstep and I want to remind you that being a tourist in your own backyard is fun! So if you’ve got a spare weekend or even a spare afternoon this week, why not use it? Kyushu is subtropical and the Okinawa islands are tropical, so we expected some rainy/humid weather during May-June as we headed into the shoulder season... But the entire second half of our trip looked like this, even locals were apologising to us for the weather and telling us rainy season was early 😅😅 Thankfully the stunning landscapes and destinations in Kyushu really lent themselves to the moody, lush, rainy weather and it gives us some incredibly atmospheric experiences with no crowds, which was an added bonus! While this is obviously a risk of travelling in shoulder seasons and low seasons, I will never stop recommended travel during these periods, you can really have incredible experiences for a fraction of the price and often with fewer crowds! NOODLE SLIDE! This is called Nagashi Somen in Japan and while it’s not super common, you can find these restaurants in a few places around the country, usually around springs or very clean water which the noodles are cooked in. This unique Japanese dining experience is in Takachicho Gorge (there’s a small number of shops and restaurants just by the bridge in the gorge) in Kyushu and it was super affordable, no wait time and a fun way to have a small lunch after visiting the gorge and before we carried on with the rest of our trip!
