It’s summer’s last hoorah as August gets fired up in Japan with festivals galore and a public holiday dedicated to all things mountain! 🗻

While all these events are taking place, it’s also a time of extreme heat and when typhoon season starts ramping up, so being mindful of these issues is always important when thinking about your summer-related content and campaigns in Japan.

Take notes and remember to stay hydrated! 😅

Today’s public holiday in Japan is proudly brought to you by the ✨🏖️ ocean 🌊✨

Also known as Ocean or Sea Day in English, this Japanese public holiday is dedicated to showing appreciation and giving thanks to the ocean and to consider its importance to Japan as a maritime Nation. 🇯🇵

With #summer coming in particularly hot this year, many people in Japan will use the day off to (weather permitting) find a coastal retreat, partake in water activities and indulging in ‘Blue Hawaii’ flavored 'kakigori' or shaved-ice. It’s blue flavored! 🍧

Summer in Japan is filled with plenty of events and cultural icons that lend well to social media campaigns! Here are some ideas to get you started. 🏖️

🌦️ Rainy Season: Known as “tsuyu” in Japan, this time of year is the precursor to real summer with lots of cloudy, humid days and of course, rain! During this time, people stay indoors and are prompted to get their homes prepped and cleaned. Other activities include making homemade umeshu and going to see blooming hydrangeas.

🧠 Ideas: Simple appreciation posts marking the time of year with relevant imagery or a related sales promo.

🍧 Food: Kakigori or shaved ice topped with super sweet flavored syrups stirs up a lot of nostalgia for many people in Japan. These desserts have also seen a glow-up in recent years with cafes serving decadent kakigori topped with flambéed meringue and pureed fruits. Limited edition spicy food flavors also see a boost at this time of year!

🧠 Ideas: Community engagement polls or limited edition flavors/brand incorporations.

🌻 Flora & Fauna: Japan loves to celebrate and acknowledge the natural world. Hydrangeas, sunflowers and more come into bloom across the country, with the Hokkaido region being very popular for its flower fields. Meanwhile, the chirp of cicadas, smell of mosquito coils and glow of fireflies set the summer ambience level to maximum.

🧠 Ideas: Product photoshoots amongst the flowers or community engagement games with bugs!

🎆 Fireworks: Known as “hanabi” in Japan, there are hundreds of fireworks festivals around the country during summer. Much like the summer festivals, these events will see plenty of people dressing up in yukata and eating street food while watching the show unfold.

🧠 Ideas: Giveaway campaigns and appreciation posts with relevant imagery.

Do you feel ✨influenced?✨

Understanding how Japanese influencers operate compared to the West will help you set your expectations and plan for successful influencer campaigns in Japan! Here are our secrets.

1. Treat Japan as it’s own unique campaign 🇯🇵
Synching launches on a global level is always a good idea, but copy and pasting your format in a region as different as Japan will cause a lot of headaches and low performance. It’s highly probable that whatever worked in your main territory will not work the same way in Japan!

2. Have your products on hand and ready to send 📦
Before you start approaching influencers for campaigns, make sure you physically have your products and are ready to send! Creators in Japan are very detail-oriented and if a campaign start is delayed because of late product shipment, the creator is likely to take a proportionate amount of time to make sure they nail everything in the campaign brief, or in some cases drop the campaign all together.

3. Make sure you have more than enough time ⏲️
Adding Japan to your target regions 2 weeks before a global campaign is scheduled to go live won’t work. Japanese creators are highly detail-oriented and will labor over their content. On top of that, if your brief materials are not already in Japanese, it will take time to localize! Give yourself at minimum 4 weeks to communicate with creators. More if you have nothing prepared!

4. Be crystal clear on your creator criteria 💫
There is nothing worse than feeling like you aren’t reaching the right creators. You can never have to much detail in Japan. Be super crystal clear on what is expected, what is not allowed, and what you want it to look like. Remember, some formats and structures might not be normal here in Japan.

5. Don’t do it yourself. 🛑 Use Hashi Media! We have a full service Influencer team that can handle your campaign briefs, influencer management, strategy, translation and campaign management.

Check out these surprising stats about social media in Japan. The more you know! 🤓

1. Facebook users in Japan leave only 1 comment per month on average. 💬
Japanese people value their privacy, so commenting or vetting something publicly on social media is like stepping outside of that anonymity. Getting lower engagements on a post that what you’re used to doesn’t necessarily mean the message hasn’t gotten through. Instead, adjust your engagement benchmark for Japan and think of them as more valuable.

2. Only 23% of Japanese people use their real name on X. 🥸
Again, privacy is very important to Japanese people. If you see a profile with a username of just random numbers and letters and zero posts, don’t assume it’s a fake account. When it comes to UGC or tagging users, make sure to always get written permission when including people in your posts.

3. Japanese people spend only 51 minutes per day on social media. ⏱️
Compared to users in the USA who average around 136 minutes. This makes it all the more important to cut through the noise for your audience in Japan.

4. Only 18% of internet users in Japan use TikTok. 👯
Compared to the USA, where 42% of Internet users use TikTok. All the more reason to make sure your audience is on TikTok in Japan before investing into it.

5. About 8 out of 10 people in Japan use LINE. 〰️
With over 95 million users in Japan, LINE is considered the number 1 super-app in Japan, delivering messages, news, coupons and a range of other content to users.

Which fact surprised you the most?

We are now into the second and depending on your hemisphere, the hottest half of the year. 🥵

If you’ve ever been to Japan during summer, you’ll understand the heat and humidity here just hits different, making ‘kakigori’ or shaved ice desserts all the more popular. There’s even a special day for them!

This year, the Paris 2024 #Olympics will also be getting started, so it’s a good idea to keep an eye on how Japan is performing in the medal tally and join in the cheer squad! 🎉

As always, mark up those calendars and stay cool with this month’s key phrase, “ATSUI DESU NE~” 😉

Here’s some insider knowledge on running PR in Japan 😎 📣

1. You need to pay to play. 💴
Japanese media is very much focused on paid placements in order to get product announcements and reviews guaranteed for your launch window. Unless you have an incredibly unique and worldwide famous product or IP, you can expect to set aside a budget to get paid placements with key media.

2. Don’t just translate your press release from other markets. ❌
Japanese media and their readers are heavily focused on details and specs and less about fluffy language. The key is to create a technical spec sheet to compliment your marketing message so the media has the best of both worlds, and are more likely to get the information across to the discerning Japanese consumer.
Host a media event! 📣

3. For brands trying to gain a foothold in Japan, we highly recommend hosting a media event with direct hands-on access for your entire suite of products. One-on-one style with media and someone who can speak about the company history and enstill a sense of trust with the media will allow them to feel informed and comfortable talking about your brand.
Participate in relevant events in Japan ✅

4. Taking part in key calendar moments for your chosen niche in Japan can really solidify your brand as a player in the space. For gaming we suggest BitSummit and Tokyo Game Show. For consumer tech we suggest CEATEC.

5. Don’t do it yourself. 🛑
Use Hashi Media! We have a full service PR team that can handle your press kits, media releases, product distribution, translation and interpreting for events and interviews, and paid placement management. 2024-06-14 06:34:28 .. 11 +56% 0 -

June is also when summer bonuses are handed out, prompting a spike in sales promotions.📈

Did you know there are over 2600 ‘anniversary days’ established by industries, companies and individuals for the purpose of promoting themselves or an idea across the year in #Japan? Even foreign companies with offices in Japan can register an anniversary day!🤔

The reason for why companies pick specific days to register an anniversary varies. Sometimes it may be a play-on-words with the example of Cat Day coming from the date 2/22 sounding like a cat’s meow in Japanese (”nyan nyan nyan”). Other times, it’s a more practical reason such as California Raisin Day on May 1 aligning with the growing season of the fruit.

While there as some very niche anniversaries like Tow Truck Day on October 19, some of the more popular anniversaries gain lots of attention on social media such as Thank You Day on March 9 with over 40,000 hashtags on Instagram!

One thing’s for sure, we’ll definitely be celebrating Bridge Day on August 4!😉

Mother’s Day in Japan goes by the name “haha no hi” and is mostly celebrated in the same way as other parts of the world. The flowers of choice are carnations or roses, and gifts involve jewelry, arts and crafts and breakfast made by the kids. ☕💐

On social media however, brands tend to go straight for the purse strings when it comes to aligning with the occasion, with sales promotions the top content both on and ahead of the day.

We’re a third of the way into the year, the weather is getting warmer and finally, Golden Week in Japan has started! This collection of public holidays in one of the biggest holiday seasons in Japan and sees a surge in travel, sales promotions and all-round leisure. 🏖️

While Showa Day and Constitutional Memorial Day go by without much fuss, Children’s Day is a big occasion for the younger kids (especially boys) to be celebrated and spoiled. Overall, brands tend to focus on the broader concept of “Golden Week” instead of honing in on one particular day during this time of year for their campaigns and promotions.

ℹ️ Side note: We’ll also be taking a well earned break between May 2 - 6! Stay golden everyone!☀️
