HJ in Conversation with... Darrel Starkey! We’re going to be chatting to Darrel tomorrow about an extra-ordinary shoot we featured in our August issue of HJ. Eight hairdressers were matched with eight models who are being treated for breast cancer. Back in June, I invited charlottegrantwest with hairdressersjournal to met eight hairdressers and a gorgeous group of women who have had or are undergoing treatment for breast cancer. We all gathered at SE1 Studios for a wig shoot like no other. Mentored by hairbydarrel , and brought together by the pinkribbonfoundation , eight hairdressers were matched with eight models who had entrusted them to craft handmade, bespoke wigs from scratch. On the day, the models were shown their new wigs and the moment was captured by photographer liamoakesphoto No pressure right?! Amazingly this was the first time that some of the hairdressers had ever created a complete wig before. Under the guidance of WIG-torship creator Darrel, hairdressers completed a two-day course that was firmly hands-on and fast-paced. HJ loved getting to know the students, who revealed that they’d been up until the early hours making sure their wigs were spot-on for their most deserving of clients. 📸 A Wig Shoot Like No Other 💖 I’m incredibly proud to share this emotional and unforgettable campaign, created in partnership with The pinkribbonfoundation This project brought together eight amazing hairdressers who joined me on my WIG-torship Weekender course to hand-make bespoke wigs from scratch. These wigs were gifted to eight phenomenal women who have battled or are currently battling breast cancer. For many of the stylists, this was their very first time creating a full wig, and what a journey it was. From hours of prep to the powerful moment each woman tried on her wig, this shoot captured so much more than hair, it captured strength, healing, and confidence. Witnessing these women light up was truly life-changing.
