Year 4! We moved into our current home campnorthend ‼️ Goodyear Arts relocated here in 2018 and outfitted the raw factory space that now contains a sprawling exhibition and performance space, individual artist studios, rehearsal spaces for musicians and dancers, a screen-printing press, and a wood shop. We saw our residency program begin to grow along with the collective and our ability to serve the needs of the Charlotte arts community. 2025-10-06 19:59:14 Year 4! We moved into.. 61 -54% 2 -39%

33 years ago today, HNin Nie was born with all her colors, which she lived, wore, made, and radiated in ways that helped us see better, feel warmer, laugh more, and to understand each other and ourselves.

Her artmaking was a marvel. She joined us as a painter (not a sculptor—yet) for her summer 2018 residency with an ambition to build an immersive, room-sized head for her Negative Nancy character. And she did. And it had light-up words inside. And a thousand people walked through her head on opening night, many of them saying after that it had made them feel understood. It was a wonder.

This is how she worked: exuberantly, ever-reaching, always with emotion and her weird sense of humor. From painting to sculpture to ceramics to video to installation to public art, she experimented and invented the most astonishing things. Being near her practice made us want to push ourselves in our own, which she supported with such love and attention that, when she witnessed what you were trying to do, you knew she was present and focused. You felt special. And you felt even more so when she collaborated with you or helped document your work, which she often did.

Lucky for us all, HNin’s generosity, boldness, and beauty are in everything she created and left—and in everyone who was lucky enough to encounter her. Her brilliance is not gone and never will be.

Today we celebrate her. We thank her family and her friends, along with all the stars and winds and whatever other forces may exist, for bringing us into her worlds.

We love you forever, HNin.

And as many close to her have been repeating so aptly, to anyone who reads this and misses her, remember that we’re HNin this together. 2025-09-19 19:32:48 33 years ago toda.. 1,138 +759% 29 +784%

COMING UP‼️
FOCUS is a free, public series at Goodyear Arts that uses film to facilitate deep, collaborative conversations about real-world issues. Over the course of eight sessions, attendees will view four films: Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958), Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing (1989), Miyazaki Hayao’s Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984), and Claire Denis' L'Intrus (2004). We will think through the aesthetic, ethical, sociopolitical, and metaphysical questions raised by these ground-breaking films.

After each screening at Goodyear Arts, Dr. Eric Mullis (Queens University of Charlotte) and Dr. Philip Kaffen (UNC-Charlotte) will facilitate open discussions. Personal reactions will surface philosophical issues concerning romantic love, the nature of human freedom, and the natural environment. Attendees will then return for a second session on the film that digs deeper into those topics. Concepts and arguments from optional readings by contemporary film philosophers will be presented and discussed, with an eye on connecting them to points made by the attendees in screening sessions.

Over the course of the series, the group will learn how diverse filmmakers use film to convey and grapple with complex ideas. They will also learn powerful tools of philosophical inquiry and participate in collaborative conversations about exciting films that connect to everyday life. Using accessible, thought-provoking films, the series will enact a unique form of public philosophy which is increasingly necessary in a time when thoughtful, sustained public discourse aimed at increasing understanding and personal enrichment is less and less common. 2025-08-07 21:44:08 COMING U.. 52 -61% 0 -100%
