✨ The season I became a student again ✨

For over a decade, I thought the pain in my shoulder was just part of being active. 

Teaching Zumba, I’d watch my form in videos - it was perfect! So why did it hurt?

I kept pushing through, thinking “this is normal” or “I’m just getting older.” 

Classic mistake: assuming I knew what my body needed.

Then I met a physical therapist drkatiejuddpt who did an assessment on me and revealed I had a winged scapula. 

So you mean it wasn’t all in my head?! (I’ve been told this before)

Suddenly, I wasn’t the expert anymore - I was the student. 

And the lesson wasn’t what I expected.
The unconventional truth? Sometimes “perfect form” isn’t enough. Sometimes our bodies need corrective care that goes way deeper than what we see on the surface.

My trainer nathan.irizarry words hit differently this week : “Don’t forget - YOU are your most important client, Masiel.”

It’s shifted everything for me this week and has added on to my “student season” 

I’ve embraced needle therapy, corrective stretching, and exercises that aren’t “fun” but necessary.

Now, a year+ into this healing journey, I’m finally feeling the right muscles fire. 

The crazy thing is as women we’re often taught to ignore pain - ignore the signs. But what I’ve learned is that your body will teach you what it needs - but only if you’re willing to listen like a beginner, not an expert.

Tripod foot = the form fix no one’s talking about 👀 

Most squat mistakes start at the ground up. Your feet are the first place I look!

Here’s how I coach my clients to fix it ⬇️

One of my challenge participants sent me this video, and right away I noticed instability in her feet. Her toes and heels were shifting between reps which is a sign that her foundation wasn’t solid.

👣 I teach my clients to create a tripod foot:
✔️ Big toe
✔️ Pinky toe
✔️ Heel
All pressing into the floor, creating stability from the ground up.

In the next clip, I take my shoes off to show what it should look like when your feet are actually doing their job during a squat.

This small fix makes a huge difference in how strong and stable your lift feels.

There’s been 2 times in my life when that happened…

Once when I lived in New York and was in the midst of navigating major depression and the other was at the end of 2024.

But this time it was the other side of the coin: from doing TOO FUCKING MUCH 😅🤣

I was doing the most, not asking for help or support to attend to my wellbeing.
Which snowballed into exhaustion, burnout and anxiety.

I had a come to Jesus moment when I saw those back rolls and the scale started creeping up. 

Where most women would’ve started beating themselves up; I decided to course correct.

I didn’t make it mean anything about me.
I didn’t blame my age.
My hormones or any other excuses.

My biggest barrier was myself = so I had to decide that enough was enough!

Some people call focusing on how you look vain, but here’s the thing: when you don’t like how you look and feel, it affects EVERYTHING!

How you show up, how you carry yourself, how you move through the world.

& in this fitness journey there are so many different seasons. It’s not meant to be linear and I’ve made peace with that. I’m proud of myself for expanding my definition of success.

I was consistent AF… but still had ZERO results 😩

When I got serious about the gym, I had no problem being consistent.

I was taking a bootcamp class, a Zumba class, a cardio kickboxing class, AND a run club…
I was doing it ALL! And honestly having SO much fun🔥

But you know what I didn’t have?
Results 🤣

It didn’t take me too long to recognize that I was clearly not a professional in this arena and needed help.

I wanted to lose weight, but what I REALLY cared about was changing the shape of my body. Toned is what I was going for - not just skinny.

That I could learn how to train.
How to eat properly.

You shouldn’t have to pick between enjoying your trip and feeling good in your body…

One of my clients is flying to Florida tomorrow and asked me what she should focus on while she’s there.

This is exactly what I told her (that I think will help you too!)

Because here’s a mistake I see a lot of women repeating: You spend weeks stressing about “staying on track,” and then once you go away you completely fall off and eat/drink whatever is in sight (and then feel guilty afterwards). And need to “diet” when you come back home again.

But there’s a better, healthier alternative! Having a simple game plan that lets you enjoy your vacation AND feel good in your body.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about having a strategy that actually travels with you. (See what I did there 🤣😂)

What I told her (and what I’m telling you):
🥩 Lead with protein at every meal. Chicken, shrimp, steak etc. Get the leanest versions and ask for extra!
💧 Stay hydrated. Flying, drinking, and being in the sun all dehydrate you. Bring your refillable water bottles, electrolytes and drink half of your body weight in oz. When you feel thirsty that means you’re already dehydrated!
🚶🏽‍♀️ Move daily. Beach walks, hotel gym, dancing at dinner. Just move your body somehow to help increase your energy expenditure and release any pent up traveling stress

That’s it. 

No tracking necessary 
No guilt spirals
No making up for “bad” days

You don’t need to track every bite or feel guilty about the piña colada. You just need a simple framework that works whether you’re home or on a beach in Miami

STEP 1: MINDSET RESET

What to do instead: Replace that fear with this truth. Everyone started somewhere, and you’re starting here. You’re not behind. You’re in your beginner strength era, and that’s actually powerful.

STEP 2: STOP WINGING IT

What’s really happening: You’re walking around unsure of what to do next. That’s what makes you feel lost or like you’re doing it wrong.

What to do instead: Follow a structured program that tells you what to do, how many reps, what weight range to start with, and how to progress each week. You don’t need to figure it out. You need a map.

STEP 3: COME IN DRESSED W/ MAIN CHARACTER ENERGY

What’s really happening: You feel self-conscious. You overthink every movement. You’re too aware of your body.

What to do instead: Wear a gym outfit that makes you feel like you. Put your hair how you like it. Blast your favorite playlist. Headphones on, tunnel vision activated. You’re not here to impress. You’re here to evolve.

My client didn’t get results because she “went harder.”
She lost weight because she finally let go of the “perfect plan” and started showing up consistently. Here’s what changed:

This transformation happened using my MNM Method:

✨ Step 1: MINDSET
Her biggest hurdle before starting was lack of accountability and making the time to do this for herself. As a single mom of 2 teenagers working 40+ hours, her days can be stressful.

Once she decided to invest and have me hold her accountable, we worked together to see where she could PRIORITIZE the time to start with small habits (steps, water, meal prepping, tracking).

But most important of all: learning to master her thoughts and give herself grace when she fell off track or life got in the way.

🍏 Step 2: NUTRITION
I taught her everything she needed to know about HOW to stay in a calorie deficit.

Because we all know we need to eat less if we want to lose weight, but the KEY is: how do you do it realistically without feeling like you’re starving?

We really worked on nailing this protein business, and what has helped and kept her on track the most is TRACKING.

And unless you’re willing to be honest first and foremost with yourself about how much you’re actually eating, nothing will change.

We prioritized strength training in her schedule.

She likes cardio, which is fine, but when we’re going for changing your body composition, YOU MUST RESISTANCE TRAIN.

When she couldn’t get a full workout in, she made sure she got the strength training part in. Because that’s critical to those muscles you see in her back, OK?!

Remember, this is called a fitness JOURNEY.
If you don’t fall off or get off track, everyone would be successful at it.

The key is:
Do you know how to get back ON track?
Do you allow yourself to make excuses and blame your hectic schedule, or are you looking to find a way to make it happen?
