Back when I learned the Kneeling Ballet Stretches on the Cadillac from Romana Kryzanowska, she had me position the fuzzies away from the Trapeze Swing using the measurement from my elbow to my fingertips. I love this set up because it allows me to fully open my chest with my arms reaching beyond my field of vision in the second part of the movement. This is different from the way Romana’s daughter, Sari Mejia Santo, sets up this exercise. Sari likes to have the fuzzies touching the brackets of the horizontal bar above the Trapeze Swing. One of the challenges Romana gave me was to lift my seat off my heel without relying heavily on my arms, much like the Traveling Splits exercise she taught on the floor. Sari let me thread my wrists through the fuzzies and grab either the straps above the fuzzies or the parallel bars overhead when I went into the second part of the stretch with my pelvis forward, chest lifted. What do Romana’s Kneeling Ballet Stretches and Clara’s Traveling Splits have in common? Both involve a type of front split, one with the front foot on the trapeze the other with the front foot sliding out on the floor, but for me the biggest similarity (and challenge) is using the buttocks muscles to lift the seat off the back heel without relying on the arms prior to going into the front split stretch. Pilates can make you as strong as a Formula One pilot, or at least as strong as Brad Pitt! When I saw the trailer for the new F1 movie I instantly noticed the clip of him training his powerhouse. My first student raced cars and through her I learned that race car pilots are the ultimate athletes who must have a strong center to withstand racing at such high speeds, many of them do Pilates! Suzanne trained with me with me through 2024, just a few weeks prior to her 95th birthday this past January. She was a classical pianist, a lover of the arts, and she became fluent in Spanish after marrying her Spanish speaking husband (many similarities with my Pilates mentor, Romana Kryzanowska). Suzanne’s dedication and consistency in her Pilates practice was outstanding and I will always cherish the pearls of wisdom she gave me. This is a variation of Front Splits I learned directly from Romana Kryzanowska. She sometimes referred to it as, “Skiing.” Although the arm movement moves from Boxing, to Shave, to the Hug, I think it’s possible that Romana called it Skiing because it strengthens the tops of the thighs and works balance control, which are two qualities necessary for successful skiing. This is the only instance in which she added hand weights to a standing exercise on the Reformer.
