Feast, the all-day dining restaurant at Sheraton Hyderabad is fast getting a reputation for its support for regional and micro cuisines. After showcasing some lesser known cuisines like “Pathare Prabhu” and “Kutchi Memon”, the restaurant is now bringing a Parsi Food Festival from 20th to 24th August.

Mumbai based Chef Tehmtan and Shernaaz Dumasia presented a Parsi wedding style sit-down dinner as a preview of the food festival. They are one of the most popular Parsi caterers in Mumbai, catering to Bollywood celebrities such as the Khans. They also run a Parsi club in that city. 

The course by course meal as served in a typical Parsi feast on a banana leaf had the who’s who of Parsi dishes -  Patrani Macchi (Fish steamed inside a banana leaf with green marinade) along with its paneer counterpart, Gravy Chicken Cutlet, Parsi Chicken Farcha, Jardallu Salli Murgh (chicken in totato gravy), Kid Gosht (tender mutton in cashew gravy) and Dhansak were all very authentic and flavourful. Vegetarians had Doodh Ma Cauliflower (simmered in milk), Venkata ki Katri (Fried Brinjal) and the veg version of the dhansak and veg cutlet.

The interaction with the Chefs proved to be quite informative and interesting, Chef Tehmtan’s sheer enthusiasm and varied experience in different fields was very inspirational. The fest is on as a buffet till 24th August.

Swaralipi Fish, Miso mutton with Kalmi saak, Nolen gur Som Tam  Baked Chicken Rosogolla with garlic bread as well as Daber Shorbot, at Bonne Femme, a restaurant promoted by the Balaram Mullick group, that serves very interesting contemporary Really loved the taste as well as the meticulousness with which the menu was planned. Had a chat with both the owners and found them extremely passionate about what they are doing. This is one interesting 45 seater place on Rashbehari Avenue that is worth a look while visiting Kolkata.

PS: Many queries on Chicken Rosogolla. The dish is Roshogolla paired with Chicken Augratin s5ervdd with Garlic bread. It is a main course and NOT sweet

While Zuci is a very popular place for chocolate and dessert lovers, Bougainvillea, a cafe run by the same management is no less good. 

It was raining outside and I had to start with a cafe latte. From the Hyderabadi dishes Mutton Marag was very impressive. They have a large selection of Sushis, the Black Rice Avocado one has a lot of brand awareness in the Hyderabad market. Other dishes that were quite good were Sumac Chicken and Chicken Burger.

If you are visiting Bougainvillea, you will of course not leave without trying some desserts at Zuci.

An interesting popup that I experienced at Zega Hyderabad, where Fireback from Goa curated a set menu showcasing their Thai delicacies. Some of the highlights were Miang Kham (Pomelo, Roasted peanuts and coconut on a betel leaf), Pineapple Som Tam (a very different take on the salad), some delightful Tom Kha Soup, Pumpkin and Sweet Potato, Pork Belly wrapped in charred cabbage and Lamb Massaman Curry.

The food was exceptional; a term I reserve only for the best. It is great that Fireback is planning to open its outlet in Hyderabad in the next few months. Sheraton Hyderabad always does some good fests, be it in Feast or be it in Zega, and the tradition continues.

Ta.Ma.Sha has a new outlet at Gunrock, Secunderabad. A café with all the flavours of vegetarian cuisine. The place has a retro look, bringing me back to the 1970s.

And talking about the dishes, Korean Kimchi Ramen was a symphony of different tastes, as you delve into the bowl, it is sublime.  The cutlets and spring rolls were full-bodied good food…. While the Basil Dimsum & Baos impressed too. They have a take on Japanese food with their Paneer Katsu. Lots of other varieties that I plan to taste on my next visit.

The cafe also has a breezy open air dining space and a pickleball court. The café is pet-friendly.
It is good to see Secunderabad finally getting its due, with many good places opening there.

Ulavacharu is a restaurant that is more than a decade old. They were the first to introduce Andhra starters and pulavs to Hyderabad. They innovated many of their dishes. Raju Gari Pulav, Pachimirchi kodi pulav, Bangla Kodi, Tandoori Korameenu are some of their signature dishes attributed to them.
The restaurant chain has started a new branch at Kukatpally offering their entire menu and some new dishes.

The Matia Burj promotion at ITC Kohenur brings to us the flavours of the Royal Islamic cuisine of Kolkata during the British era. 

Nawab Wajed Ali Shah of Lucknow was detained at the Matia Burj fort in Kolkata where the Awadhi cuisine underwent a twist under local influence to result in what is now known as Islamic food of Kolkata. 

Gosht Dum Biryani, Chaap, Rizala and Tikiya Kabab are some of the dishes that the cuisine is known for.
The promotion is on till 25th July at Dum Pukht Begum’s, ITC Kohenur.

Chef Bridget White, the most well-known expert on Anglo Indian cuisine is at Raen, the pop-up restaurant at The Leela Hyderabad. Author of 8 books on the cuisine, Chef Bridget's food is very subtle and full of flavours. Had a great time listening to various anecdotes about the history of the cuisine.

The food served included Anglo-Indian style Mutton Vindaloo, Crumb Fried Chicken Cutlet, The Army Camp Soup (an onion based soup that was served in army barracks), Anglo Indian Fish Moilee, Pepper Okra and Potato Stir Fry. 

The desserts included Caramel Custard, Bread Pudding and Memsahib's Mess (my favourite).

The fest is on till 12th July both for lunch and dinner. I would strongly recommend it to people who enjoy subtle flavours and those interested in Indian regional food.

A rejuvenating weekend at Bogmallo Beach Resort Goa. The sea view from the room itself and the pristine and near empty beach made us stick around to this location a few miles from Dabolim and enjoy the nearby food joints (food story coming soon). The only time we went far was to the Ramakrishna Mission at Ponda.

Goa in monsoons… we hardly had rain during our four-day stay, maybe couple of hours per day. Most of the time was spent sitting at the balcony and gazing at the roaring ocean.
The resort is located at a lovely location with all room balconies overlooking the ocean. Sunset when the skies are clear can be enjoyed from the room balcony itself (see pics). The restaurant Coconut Grove also has a great view.

Quite a few years back I had visited a promising food truck in Madhapur offering tiffins from Rayalaseema specifically Kadapa and Anantapur districts, and covered them in Indian Express. Since then, their dishes have been widely acclaimed in the Hyderabad market and now they have multiple outlets in the city of Hyderabad.

I visited their recently opened outlet in Begumpet. The food remained as good as when I had it earlier. The spice level in Karam is down a bity, maybe because of the welcome they received from their non-Telugu customers.

Neyyi Karam Dosa, Neyyi Karam Idly, Nannari and Junnu are some of my favourites here.

If you are looking for Pan-India regional food, Sa.Ma – The Indian Kitchen at Filmnagar deserves a strong recommendation. Housed in a swank ethnic bungalow, the open look of a restaurant is something to talk about.

For me, the huge winner from the menu is its first page – heirloom recipes from the Gummadi Venkateshwara Rao’s family, whose granddaughter Samjana is the owner. Comfort food Muddapappu Annam with Gummadikaya Pulusu is a strong recommendation along with Ammamma’s Tiffin, a complete meal by itself. 

The other parts of the menu have delicacies from many regions of India – Mushroom Thukpa, Palak Patta Chaat, Kosha Mangsho, Tabak Maaz and Laal Maas are a few that got my attention. We also loved the Prawn Curry with Appam. Do not miss the Elaneer Panna Cotta here, it is just heavenly. British Raj Rolly Polly Pudding also deserves a mention.

Now, Mizo food in Hyderabad. A small place Moy has opened up in Kukatpally serving Mizo thali at Rs 350. Our thali had Pork skin fry, a broth of leafy veggies, dal, bharta and pork fry. Additionally we tried Crab with veggies, Pork leg and Sanpiau, a congee of fermented rice, pork and crispies.

A must visit for enthusiasts of Indian regional cuisines in general and North Eastern cuisine in particular.

TUYA, a restaurant launched in Jubilee Hills on Wednesday. The place provides South Indian cuisine with a contemporary twist. Extensive research has gone in to curate the menu.

Mutton Seekulu, Ghee Roast with Dosa, Muntha Masala with Fried Gongura Leaves, Alleppy Chicken with Ghee Rice, Idiyappam with Kadala Curry, Jackfruit Gassi with Sanna, Avocado Sarvapindi had enough on plate for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Desserts like Pineapple Kasi Halwa and Frozen Rajamundry Milkshake were refreshingly different.

Mirell is a new vegetarian restaurant that is in the news these days. Visited on a weekday afternoon to find a decent crowd enjoying the delicacies there. The food was top notch. We tried Jhol Momos, Mushroom Cottage Baos, Ramen Bowl and Korean Cottage Cheese Rice apart from a couple of mocktails. 

Though what we tried were primarily Asian, they also have a good list of Indian and global dishes. Check the reel for details.
