I STOPPED POSTING ON SOCIAL MEDIA FOR MONTHS AND THIS IS WHY…. 👇🏾⁣

Like many of you, last year really challenged my mental health. 🤯There were days and weeks where I disconnected because I struggled to find my why or make sense of everything happening. One thing that helped me was daily 𝗪𝗔𝗟𝗞 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗣𝗬. I would spend 10-20 minutes each day walking outside. It was a way for me to practice self-care and spend time reminding myself that there was light outside of the four walls of my home. ♥️⁣

I’m excited to continue this practice of self care in 2021 and team up with REI in OutFit. It’s a FREE 8-week virtual program encouraging you to:⁣

GROWTH MAY MEAN LETTING GO OF RELATIONSHIPS THAT HAVE LOST THEIR MEANING 💥, releasing familiar but limiting patterns, and freeing yourself of values your no longer believe in. ⁣

Each time I look at our plant babies, I’m reminded of how quickly things can grow, change or remain stagnant. 🌱⁣
⁣
Yesterday, I was talking with a friend about how friendships and relationships (including the relationship with yourself) can evolve over time.  This made me think about one of my friendships and how it feels like a one-sided relationship. 🤯⁣
⁣
If I’m completely honest with myself, my pride wants to focus on all the time and energy I’ve “invested” into this friendship. ⁣
⁣
I feel disappointed and hurt, but deep down I know I should release some aspects of our friendship for our mutual growth. 🙏🏾 It’s hard but necessary. ⁣
⁣
This experience has reminded me that our biggest moments of GROWTH WILL BE UNCOMFORTABLE. 💯⁣
⁣
With embracing growth it’s necessary to: ⁣
⁣
✨Be honest with yourself about how you’re feeling. ⁣
⁣
✨Acknowledge that it’s ok for relationships, patterns, beliefs and plans to change over time. ⁣
⁣
✨And ultimately you have to make the decision of whether to hold onto or release and move on. ⁣
⁣

HAPPINESS IS AN ACT OF COURAGE. 💥 ⁣

During a class I taught earlier today, I shared that phrase with a student and how I want to be more intentional about living and breathing in my joy. ✨⁣
⁣
After class we chatted about what has been bringing her joy. Mid conversation she shed a few tears, she admitted that it had been hard to find joy lately. ⁣
 ⁣
I listened, paused and finally opened up to her that there were days where I had/have the same struggle. ✨⁣
⁣
I explained to her that through daily reflection, I realized that there were moments in my life where I witnessed myself or other women around me dimming their joy to help or show up for others. ⁣
⁣
Sometimes because they didn’t think they “deserved” it and other times because I/they feared being looked at as selfish for celebrating when others weren’t able to. 🗣⁣
 ⁣
Our conversation reminded me that finding joy isn’t about always being positive, it’s more-so about acknowledging what’s happening right now and giving yourself permission to gravitate toward what lights you up, what brings your happiness.🙌🏾⁣
 ⁣
Choosing joy doesn’t mean every moment or every day will be great, but it can be a great reminder to do a self check-in.  ⁣

At some point you just have to let go of what you thought should happen and live in what is happening.✨ ⁣

I felt a part of me drift away in March.💔 When we started quarantining and the yoga studios I taught at closed, sadness began to consume me. All the things that “I had to let go of” became my primary focus. I realized as each day passed, my love for yoga was based on physical connection and being in a group setting. I had lost sight of my connection to my breath and body. ⁣
⁣
It felt heartbreaking to flow at home. 🧘🏾‍♀️For two weeks I didn’t flow, practice or truly focus on my breath.  I had always described to others how yoga has and always transformed my life but reflecting back on those weeks and months, I know I lost sight of what yoga truly means and what impact it had on my life. ⁣
⁣
Letting go of expectations and plans are hard. Change feels devastating at times.  We resist the need to move on or resist the need to stay and push through it. But what I have to come to realize is MOVEMENT CAN BE MEDICINE. 💥Whether it’s physical movement, whether is moving through your challenges, or whether its shifting your mindset to handle where you are right now. It’s all a part of letting go. ⁣
⁣
Often times we don’t allow ourselves to EMBRACE THE MAGIC OF LETTING GO 👏🏾; the beauty of releasing something is you CREATE SPACE we need to live life as it’s happening right now. ✨ ⁣
⁣
So friend, what can you let go of today, this week, this month to create space to live life as it’s happening right now? Maybe doubt? Maybe focus on uncertainty? Despite what you may be feeling, know that we are in this together. 🙏🏾⁣

I’ve never told anyone this, but it finally feels right to share, so I hope you will take a moment to listen.⁣
⁣
Many of my non-black peers and friends have mentioned learning so much in the past few weeks. They’ve mentioned books, movies and podcasts that have enlightened and educated them to the racial injustices against black people that have existed for centuries. It’s created space for uncomfortable, yet necessary conversations. 🙏🏾 Honestly, while others are learning, I’ve been balancing anger, sadness, healing, hope and now actively unlearning. ⁣
⁣
I’m realizing how much I restricted my “blackness” from taking up space. Many of you may not know that my dad is a proud Nigerian and it shows so much in his words and actions. From a young age, I grew up with him telling me how beautiful my skin is, how amazing my ancestors were and how special our culture and language truly is.  Yesterday, I watched a video of a black child singing with her father. She sang the words “my black is beautiful… my skin is beautiful, and no one can tell me it's not”. ⁣
⁣
I instantly began to cry because the video reminded so much of affirmations that I grew up with, words that gave me so much confidence, but words I never felt I could say aloud at work even within the wellness space, where I’ve often been the only black person in the room. The past few weeks, I’ve spent a lot of time journaling, reflecting and meditating. ⁣
⁣
It’s been incredibly hard to process my words and feelings, but it feels like true healing and a step towards hope.  So, when I think about #Juneteenth and what it means to me this year. It feels like I’m finally able to shed a part of me that has been pushed aside and quieted to protect others’ feelings.  I feel liberated and empowered to be my most authentic and confident self. 🙌🏾❤️⁣

We have felt the pain of being torn down, and have decided to be deliberate about building others. All too often, us women find it easier to criticize each other, instead of building each other up. With all the negativity going around let’s do something positive!!! ✊🏾⁣

Earlier today I taught an essential oils yoga class where the intention was on letting go. During class students were able to in-cooperate 4 essential oils and were encouraged to let go of something they’ve been holding on to. .
.
One student shared that she wanted let go of feelings of doubt that been holding them back and one student wanted to let go of the pressure to say “yes”. .
.
Letting go is difficult, scary and honestly one of the hardest things to do.  But the amazing thing is that it can be a release and allow you to move onto the next part in your journey. .
.
I’m working on letting go of the pressure to get “everything” done before the new year. I’m putting in the work and effort but removing the pressure and stress if it doesn’t all get done.

I feel empowered from within when I say yes to what feels right, trust that I AM ENOUGH and operate daily from a place of love and gratitude. 🙌🏾❤️ Soooo very thankful for the amazing moments and learned so much from the failures.  I’m walking into the new year full of strength and feeling so damn proud and empowered to take on so much more!

I woke up reflecting on everything that’s happened during the year and all of the greatness and challenges from the year.  I feel like I’ve been pushed to the limits in some weeks and months but I know 🙏🏾growth is a beautiful thing.

Here are a few things I am grateful for in 2018:

- leaving my full-time job of 12 years and beginning my teaching journey at corepoweryoga to follow one of my passions ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- meeting and connection so many of you amazing women ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- connecting with myself on a deeper level - like saying “no” when needed and taking time to meditate, journal, and disconnect
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- the “no’s” I received from  people to make room for the moments and opportunities when I received a “yes”

Yesterday I received some super disappointing news. 😓  Put a lot of energy, time and heart into something and I had my mind ready for a “yes” but instead got a “not right now”. Anyone else been there before? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

After I shed a few tears and replayed the moment a million times, I took a moment to meditate and reframe my thoughts. I had to remind myself —> REAL TALK - rejection is a part of everyone’s life!

We won’t always get a “yes” and things won’t always work out how we think they should but deep down it all works out how it should and often times it means there’s an another “better” opportunity waiting for us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I’ve learned that the disappointing and low moments make space and create momentum to get you closer to where you should and want to be.  These moments truly test us and what we do after them the important part of the process. So whatever has happened to you in 2018 or what you’ll experience in 2019 - stay open for all the amazingness and good that comes from struggle, disappointments and the “not right now”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Walking into Monday with a smile, a crazy long to-do list and READY to crush this week’s goals! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Real talk — my past Monday’s have been all over the place — I’m either super productive or get caught up in the distractions and 🙈😫feel like I get nothing done. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

One thing that’s helped me is to add my to-do list to my “Notes” app and highlight 3 things to focus on completing.  I check in with myself at 12 pm and 5 pm to see what I’ve complete.  I dream of checking off my entire to-do list but honestly if I get the 3 things highlighted done then I feel accomplished! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Today, here are the 3 items I’ll be focusing on: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(1) practice a yoga flow for 30 minutes to prep for an upcoming audition
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(2) make an outline for my weekly blog post ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(3) block off 1-hour for self-care time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I could share one piece of advice it would be to focus on gratitude versus quantity! The holidays are about giving back, connecting, taking time to self-reflect and just focus on letting go of the small stuff that doesn’t matter. 💗Not about how much you on your plate 2 days out of the year. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Woke up this morning filled with so much gratitude in the power of connecting in-person versus on social media/text/DM.  I’ve been fortunate to meet so many amazing souls on IG but actually having a convo, giving a hug and sharing an experience is such a GIFT. ✨I often use my journal as a place to reflect on these moments but today I wanted to spend a moment sending love and gratitude to the beautiful souls that continue to ignite my passion in people and purpose in community. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Lately it’s definitely harder to jump out of bed in the morning so I’ve been switching up my routine.  I immediately head to the kitchen, turn on my kettle, make myself a cup of tea and then listen to meditation tunes for 5 minutes. I’ve  also been adding something warm for a mid-morning or mid-day snack. Y’allllll these yummy Almond Butter Cinnamon Vegan Muffins are everything and perfect for that! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

They’re super easy, only 8 ingredients and take about 20 minutes to bake (full recipe in the link in my bio)! Trust me on this … they'll have you day dream about almond butter for days! My heart is soooo FULL from such an amazing day at thefitatlantafest! This morning I woke up feeling incredibly blessed and grateful. 🙌🏾 So excited to have the chance to explore a place I’ve wanted to visit as a kid.  One of my favorite things about this trip?  I have no food guilt!  I used to be one of those people constantly (over)analyzing and struggling with “overeating” on vacation. But I have no time for that now and my mentality over the past few years I’m all about a happy, healthy balance. .

So cheers to a lifetime of balance on and off of vacation. .
