Last November I took a road trip around Spain! 🇪🇸

For years, my dad has talked about renting a convertible and driving down Spain’s Mediterranean coast, stopping in small towns and local restaurants to eat tapas and drink sangria. When I found myself with a month off between jobs, we booked a flight into Barcelona and another one out of Madrid 10 days later.

Before arriving we secured out one-way car rental and booked a hotel for our first night in Barcelona. We had an idea of what we wanted to see, but after that we were winging it!

Look for a few blog posts as the blog comes back to hear about how we made our way through southeastern Spain and lessons learned if you want to try it!

In the meantime, enjoy these photos from each city we visited:

Sometimes traveling for business can be fun!

Last week I had a last-minute trip to Pittsburgh. I had never been before and wasn’t sure what to expect. The coolest thing was how you arrive at an airport outside the city in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains, drive through a tunnel, and have the city with its three rivers suddenly appear before you.

I only had 24 hours in the city, and was in meetings for most of that time, but I did find a few minutes to wander around Point State Park. If you find yourself in the city in a similar timeframe, I recommend this as one place to explore! 2022-07-06 18:09:20 Sometimes traveling for.. 26 -40% 3 -28%
Denver always surprises me! My trip last weekend was my fifth time visiting the area, yet I still found so many new things to see and experience (along with some old favorites like lunch at appaloosagrill).

On my way to Denver this week I took advantage of a long stopover in Miami to spend some time at the beach! When booking my flights, I grumbled at the 7.5 hour layover at first, but after some research decided to take embrace it instead. ☀️

First, in order to attempt this I recommend having at least 6 day or evening hours between flights for it to be worth it. You’ll want to account for about 1 hour each way to get in and out of the city to ensure you don’t miss your flight, plus the 1-2 hour early arrival at the airport, plus enough time in the city for the effort to be worthwhile. ✈️

For Miami in particular, an Uber or Lyft would have been $30 round trip, whereas the Miami Beach Express bus from the airport was only $4.50 and took the same amount of time! Researching your transportation options ahead of time will prevent using previous time during the layover figuring out how to get into the city, and subsequent stress getting back to the airport.

Because my 3.5 hour flight landed at 2:30, I headed straight to the Klimpton Surfcomber for some lunch and a frozen margarita. The atmosphere by the pool and on the beach was exactly what I was looking for. After a relaxing hour there, I went next door to pick up a sangria at the backyardmiamibeach to take with me on the beach. 🍹

With just a large personal item, a light weight “towel”, and plenty of sunscreen applied before heading to the airport that morning, I laid out and read my new book from the airport for a couple hours as the sun started to set before heading back to the street corner to get on the Miami Beach Express bus to the airport. 🌴

Building stopovers into your trips, or embracing a long layover you can’t avoid, will help you see so many more cities and and make the most of your travel time and money! After my trip to Miami last year I had been longing to return. Now that desire has been satisfied (at least for another year!).

Do you love traveling?🗺(Of course you do, you’re following a travel account!)

Are you interested in meeting and exchanging stories other like-minded travelers? Will you be in Boston on June 1?

Then come to the the.nomadic.network Boston Chapter’s Monthly Meetup at Bell in Hand! 🔔

nomadicmatt himself joined us in April to kick off our chapter’s in-person Meetups. While it was great to meet him and hear his stories, it was also nice to connect with other travelers - both local and visiting - to hear about their adventures and exchange tips for our next trips. Doing so in the oldest continuously operating bar in the U.S. (over 200 years!) where historical figures like Daniel Webster were also known to grab a pint merely enhanced the experience. 🍻

If this sounds like your kind of evening, then join fellow Boston Chapter Leaders tiltedmap megi_baliko kayyzeeee and me on June 1 at 7 PM!

The event is free (donation-optional), though you will need to pay for your own food and drinks. The sign-up link will be available in my stories every day this week. If you can’t join us in June, check out the Boston Chapter page for our other monthly gatherings this year.

Hope to meet you soon! ✈️

Have you been to the Azores? Have you even heard of the Azores?

The Azores are an archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean that are part of Portugal. It’s about a 2.5 hour flight from Lisbon, and a 6 hour flight from Boston.

Almost all the islands in the Azores were formed by volcanos, some of which are still thought to be active today! 🌋

The sights are breathtaking, the food is amazing, and the activities created by nature are incredible. On top of all that, the islands are surprisingly cheap too! If you haven’t already, booked your flight yet, what are you waiting for?! 🇵🇹 2022-03-21 04:40:36 Have you bee.. 45 +4% 5 +20%

What’s your travel style? Who do you travel best with?

I’ve always wondered if I’m missing out by not embracing solo travel. I’ve developed a number of great travel companions for whom I am very grateful, but being an only child I’ve always wondered if I would do well with solo travel.

I appreciate some alone time when I travel, and one thing that’s great about my travel companions is they also appreciate it. However, this past weekend in North Carolina I had two full days to myself, and by the end of the second day I realized I was pretty lonely.

Alternatively, during the pictured girl’s weekend in Panama City Beach, FL, for my friend’s bachelorette party, I had a great time!

Almost everyone I spoke with before visiting Asheville said I had to check out the craft brewery scene. I’m not a huge beer drinker so I perused the list of local breweries when I arrived and selected one to visit.

Highland Brewing Company, founded in 1994, is the oldest and was first brewery in the area. The brewery is located in the mountains about a ten minute drive out of town.

The indoor seating area is in a big garage set up for live music performances, but the real gem is the outdoor Meadow. When you visit the brewery, head out back, grab a picnic table, and order a pint from the outdoor bar. Once you’ve sampled one of Highland’s many brews you can throw around a frisbee or join a game of beach volleyball.

Despite being outside the city, I definitely recommend checking out Highland Brewing Company when you visit Asheville. Cheers! 🍻 2021-08-20 17:42:32 Almost everyone .. 36 -17% 1 -76%

Today is the “rainy day” of my trip to St. Lucia. 🌧

All the locals keep talking about how rainy season just started, and how we tourists should not complain about the rain because we chose to visit during this time.

It is, in fact, the start of hurricane season. Hurricane Elsa hit the island just last weekend and destroyed some sugar cane and banana plantations, though we haven’t seen any of the affects yet.

Admittedly I had no idea it was rainy or hurricane season when I booked this trip. No wonder the prices were so cheap!

I seem to have a knack for traveling during each location’s off-season. In general, the best weeks to go anywhere in the world are the first full week of September and the first full week of May. I am adding the Caribbean in July to this list!

Don’t be afraid of the occasional tropical rain storm. Book the excursion and embrace the rain, because you’ll be getting wet swimming in the waterfall or snorkeling off your catamaran anyway.

My friend and I booked spa treatments this afternoon because we thought it was going to pour, but we are sitting in the sun on the beach and swimming in the Caribbean Sea this morning.

The sky looks threatening so I’m sure it will rain at some point, but how disappointing would it have been if we delayed our canceled our trip because of a little predicted rain? 2021-07-11 21:31:27 Today is.. 42 -3% 3 -28%
My first trip outside the country since February 2020! Can you guess where I am?

My friend (and one of my best travel companions!) Erin and I are spending a long weekend at an all-inclusive resort in St. Lucia. Erin has never been to the Caribbean or an all-inclusive resort, so after the past year we thought this would be the perfect vacation, and so far it is!

I’ve heard so many great things about St. Lucia, but one reason we chose it this year is because we heard it takes its COVID precautions seriously.

Before travel we had to receive a travel authorization from the government based on submission of a negative covid test (even though we are both fully vaccinated). When we arrived, a tent full of PPE-covered workers checked our health forms and verified our vaccine cards before giving us white wristbands that indicate we are fully vaccinated. This was all before the normal immigration process.

At the resort we get our temperature taken every day and have to wear masks everywhere except by the pool, at the beach, be while eating. All the workers are wearing masks, and some are also wearing face shields.

Every hotel also offers covid tests for return back to the States, so we will get tested again tomorrow.

The resort is very quiet, but we are loving it! I’m sure we are not necessarily getting the “full” St. Lucia experience, but the pool and beach are lovely, the water sports are open, we have an excursion booked for tomorrow, and the drinks are flowing, so it’s still a great time!! 2021-07-09 22:06:41 My first trip o.. 53 +22% 5 +20%

Who is ready for their next summer getaway?! 🙋🏼‍♀️

If you’re planning a summer trip, where are you going? Would you rather jump back into normalcy with a ton of people, or find a hidden gem where you can relax and ease back into society?

This summer I have long weekends planned in Panama City Beach, Florida, and Asheville, NC, as well as a few local day trips to the Cape, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket.

I also have a week-long girls getaway next month, but we haven’t decided where to go yet! The only thing we know for certain is we want to take advantage of the recent ability to travel internationally, and probably want to head for the Caribbean or Central America. You can find the coolest places in your own backyard if you look hard enough 🌊🪨

This jetty can be found at a state beach less than an hour from my childhood home. I would visit this beach with family or friends at least once per year growing up. One of my favorite things to do on each trip was walk out on this jetty or climb among the giant rocks next to it. 🧗🏼‍♀️

Visiting again this weekend as an adult, I was just as excited to walk out on the rocks, planning my path to find the driest and flattest options to take me as far as possible out into the ocean. 2021-05-23 19:45:34 You can.. 35 -19% 4 -4%
Outdoor dining is back for the season in Boston!

As we begin to emerge from the pandemic in the US, I’ve been looking for any positive outcomes from the past year. For the second summer in a row, Boston is allowing restaurants to take up space on sidewalks and closed city streets to set out tables. Even though the spaces are small, a lot of restaurants have been able to create their own unique outdoor dining atmosphere.

My friends and family know that I’ve always been a fan of dining al fresco, so I’m very excited to see this trend of increased patio space for restaurants. I hope it’s here to stay!

Travel among Americans is starting to pick up as the vaccine is distributed, just in time for summer!

I have a few summer trips in the works, as I’ll be fully vaccinated by the end of the month 💉

This weekend, I’m relaxing with some friends at their lake house in Maine. I used to always go on big trips to exotic locations far away. The pandemic has helped me to appreciate the beauty and simplicity in local trips.

The sign when you enter Maine says “Welcome to Vacationland.” Though I’m less than 3 hours from home, I feel like I’m on vacation this weekend. ⛵️

Good morning from beautiful Miami!

I flew down to Florida on Sunday for my first proper vacation in a year. At this point I am comfortable traveling again as long as I am taking precautions for myself. These include double-masking on the plane, taking short flights where everyone isn’t served a meal at the same time, wearing a mask around other people, spending time outside as much as possible (including embracing outdoor dining!), and staying 6 feet away from strangers.

Flight attendants for all airlines I’ve flown have been great about constantly enforcing the mask rule, so I feel very safe flying again. All of the hotel staff have been great about wearing masks too. Wait staff and Uber drivers have at least had masks with them, and put them on properly when they realized I was wearing a mask.

Many locals in Florida are acting as if there’s no pandemic: they are hanging out in crowded bars without a mask in sight! This is no surprise, and thus where the self-commitment to staying outside, wearing a mask, and maintaining distance comes into play.

By taking all these precautions, vacation may not look quite like it used to, but I’m glad I can at least start traveling again! And given that I think the beach is one of the safest places to be right now, Florida is a great place to visit ☀️ 2021-03-03 19:00:35 Good morning .. 55 +27% 6 +44%
Have you been racking up points with either americanair or jetblue over the years? Thanks to a new Northeast Regional Alliance announced between these two major U.S. carriers you’ll be able to book flights for both airlines on either of their websites in the near future using a codeshare program!

Alternatively, if you strongly prefer one of these airlines over the other, make sure you pay attention to which airline you’ll actually be flying when you book flights. This should be stated explicitly during your booking process, but one key indicator will be whether you have a connection through one of the hubs for either airline. 2021-02-27 02:26:37 Have you been racking.. 30 -31% 2 -52%
I cannot believe how much things have changed in a year!

One year ago today I was visiting friends in Valencia, Spain. Though the coronavirus outbreak was starting in Italy at the time, many people - myself included - thought it would be contained to a few countries. My friend with me on the trip brought cleaning wipes and hand sanitizer, but no one was wearing a mask and we were happily hanging out inside shoulder-to-shoulder with dozens of strangers.

The friends I was visiting who live in Valencia went into a strict lockdown shortly after I left. Later in the year they said my visit was the last social thing they did before the lockdown.

I keep this week available for a vacation every year, so I’m pretty bummed I’m writing this post from home and not an exciting international location. I think it is possible to travel safely right now, but I recommend that you get tested before and after you travel, always wear a mask around others regardless of the local requirements, and stay outside as much as possible.

I also implore everyone who is able to get vaccinated as soon as they’re eligible so we can have more trips like this one to Valencia as soon as possible!
