Hey it’s me. The faker.

I faked the identity of a healthy woman for 5 years and I’m still faking it.

Each day I give myself permission to wear my new identity like a dress. I give myself permission to quit tomorrow. I give myself permission to give up the very next day. I wake up every day and give myself a soft and gentle and loving hall pass, but the trick is that I give it to myself for the following morning.

Thats the trick.

You’re still going to lose people in your life no matter what your scale says. You’ll still get sick sometimes. People in your life will still disappoint you. You’re still going to feel frustrated and scared and you’ll still worry about finances and if your kids are watching too much TV.

You’ll still have fights. You’ll still recover from them. You’ll still feel disappointed in yourself from time to time for making choices that you know in your heart aren’t right for you.

Losing weight doesn’t inoculate us from the hard things in life. I used to think it would for some reason - that if *ONLY* I could lose weight, I’d finally be happy. If *ONLY* I could be motivated, I’d finally feel comfortable in my own skin in situations with other people. 

If only, if only, if only.

Moving targets aren’t something to hang your entire perspective on. They just aren’t. Our lives are going to shift and change and we’re changing within them.

The important thing is to realize that by making good choices each day, by feeling okay with the decisions YOU make - not other people - that you are better able to dodge those arrows as they come. You’re training your brain to be resilient. You’re training your spirit not to let go when you look at the scale and it doesn’t budge.

You trudge.

You keep going.

And when you get to your goal weight (which you will, I promise you this), you’re going to be more resilient than you were when you started. Because you didn’t give up. Because you kept going even when you had 715,826 reasons not to. Because you stuck with it.

You can stick with a lot of things. If you can do this and not give up, you can seriously do anything.

- track my calories 
- track my protein + fiber 
- drink water
- lift weights 
- sleep

and they all said i need to do that just like… forever. and once i crawled on my hands and knees from utter desperation and waved my white flag and said “ok fine i just accept that i have to do this over and over for a single day at a time until i croak” i let go of the outcome and relaxed into the habits. 

like a car accident that you stop bracing for. 

and here i am 5 years later - and i wont ever stop.

The tired one. The puffy one. The addicted one. The weepy one. The one who never stuck with anything for more than a day, who was seeking - always, always seeking (fill me! no, i don’t know with what - but i know that i am empty and i don’t know why) and seeking and looking and testing and never giving anything a second shot.

The girl on the right has found peace and comfort in repetition - meals, sleep, movement - and it feels like less of a daily battle for her.

But the Old Her, the Afraid Her, oh man. If I could wrap my arms around her now, I would. I’d tell her she was about to begin - and that decision will shift the trajectory of her sons’ lives. “You will become a helper,” I’d say to her. “You will feel less selfish when you help. You aren’t as hard to love as you think you are.”

Never, ever as hard to love as I thought I was.

I always get asked how I did it. The truth is, I didn’t do anything spectacular. It was all slow and steady and each day, I worried that it wouldn’t work. But I kept going anyway. I did this by:

- getting sober
- tracking my nutrition
- walking
- then running
- then lifting weights
- prioritizing protein in my meals
- telling myself I was becoming a fit person, every day, until I actually became one
- filling half of my plate with veggies
- eating cupcakes when I wanted cupcakes
- walking
- forgiving myself when I went days off track and picking right back up where I left off
- not stopping any of these things even when the scale stopped moving and I wanted to give up
- walking
- continuing to track my nutrition 
- doing all of these things for only 24 hours at a time, and not thinking about anything beyond that

If it sounds like a lot, don’t worry. If you don’t know where to start, don’t worry. Look at one single thing I’ve done up there ⬆️ and try that one single thing just for today. I know you can do one single thing from that list. You don’t have to do all of them. You don’t. Just one thing.

I started with one thing, for one day, and the person you see in the photo on the right did that long enough until it became a part of her, and it’s habitual now.

I’m doing this. I’m still figuring it out. You will do this. And you will figure it out with me.
