My lower back and hip rehab journey continue. Reformer Pilates has really helped me progress. I’ve been able to increase my physical activity and not be in tremendous pain until I accidentally did reformer Pilates 2 times Friday and the second class was a reformer fitness class. I was too embarrassed to walk out so I did it and now I’m paying for it. 

Note to self: Pilates 1.5 or lower when rehabbing injuries.

I remember when we were had only a couple of vegan meat alternatives available and we still ate a plant based diet. 

Why? 

For our health, the health of the planet, the health of our animals and the health of those who are subjected to working in unsafe and unclean conditions for hardly any compensation. 

Your diet doesn’t just affect you. It impacts us all and now is as good of a time as any to start eating more plant based foods. You don’t have to be vegan to enjoy a veggie burger or veggie dog. Slow and steady has never been my style but after my injury in January, here I am, struggling to do glute bridges and toe taps to rehab my back now that I have my MRI results back.

Don’t worry, I had only the equivalent of 1 doughnut. I’m still rehabbing so my physical activity remains at a minimum which means, fun foods are also kept to a minimum.

I’m the youngest elderly person you’ve ever met. I act either like a 11 year old or a 75 year old - There is no in between.

Stays up late to play cards and backgammon and wakes up early for the farmers market
Yells at people to turn down their music and makes super inappropriate and immature jokes 
Prefers to stay home and read books but can also party with the best of them 
Hikes but stops every 3 minutes to say hi to a flower or an insect or to admire the rocks

I LOVE the library📚

Albert Einstein once said, “The only thing you absolutely have to know is where the library is.”

When were you last at the library? Or when did you last use the resources your library provided? 

I think a lot of people in Canada and the US underestimate the value of a library. It is a place to learn, to wonder, to gather and to explore. Libraries are my favourite place to work and write when I’m not at home in Vancouver. 

In Paris, I have visited both national museums and I have to say, they’re both world class!

Did you know some libraries also lend movies, records/CDs, magazines, instruments and offer e-books as well as audiobooks. Personally, I borrowed over 100 in 2023! They also offer study rooms, conference rooms, printing and so much more! They are a safe space for everyone and I have never met a librarian who wasn’t eager to help. 

There are SO many libraries I want to visit in my life time, 

Library of Strahov Monastery (Prague, Czech Republic) being one of the oldest libraries still functioning. 

Wiblingen Monastery Library (Ulm, Germany) because it looks like ferry tales are made there. 

El Ateneo Grand Splendid (Buenos Aires, Argentina) because it looks like an opera could take place there.

Are you:

A - ‘Sunscreen denier’ - give me all the sun, UVA-o.k
B - “Natural sunscreen only” - because you don’t want potentially harmful chemicals on your skin but also don’t want cancer or to age prematurely 
C - “spray me down with the “chemicals” because don’t want to burn and I don’t believe your bullshit” 
D - Avoid the sun like the plague - lather me up and throw on the layers 
E - somewhere in between(comment and let me know) 

I’m a, get some sun in the morning or whenever possible (because I live in Vancouver)on my extremities but cover my face, neck and chest with both mineral based sunscreen and a physical barrier like a shirt and hat because I don’t want to age prematurely. I have olive skin so hardly ever burn. BUT I will use whatever is on hand if there is a risk of burning because burning DOES increase cancer risk. On vacation in sunny places, I apply sunscreen if the UV rating is moderate or higher even on my extremities because again BURNING IS DANGEROUS 🔥

I’ve been able to keep off over 50 pounds for 16 years while travelling regularly - How? By not justifying my diet behaviours with exercise ✨

People often over estimate how many calories they burn with physical activity and under estimate how many calories are in alcohol and food, especially when it’s being prepared or measures by someone else. 

The reality is, when you’re starting your weight loss journey, you will have to be more strict with your diet and lifestyle choices but as time goes on and your baseline weight adjusts, you’ll be able to loosen up your upper and lower ends of your calorie range. 

Here are some super simple tips and examples of what I do to keep my weight stable even while travelling: 

🫶Share your meals (appetizer, dinner and or dessert) 

🧁If you’re not sharing a meal, pick between an appetizer, a drink or dessert - not all three

✨Don’t have an appetizer, drink and or dessert everyday - choose 1-3 days a week to do one of these while on vacation. 

🚶‍♀️Most importantly, do not justify that extra glass of wine with your daily step count. 

Whole fresh foods and even healthy processed foods will not require justification - this isn’t about restricting nutritious foods but limiting the foods and behaviour that don’t align with your goals 💪

#Paris has come a long way since I was here ten years ago in terms of options. Previously, I was subjected to a fried hasbrown in between a white burger bun with ketchup as a ‘veggie burger’ and the only solid meals I had were at middle eastern and Indian restaurants. So grateful to these options now 🙌

I was pretty hungry on Saturday 😆 the food at lavantine_rooftop was so delicious and the rooftop was so beautiful - I’ll definitely be going back for the cauliflower! It was wonderful to have a tasty, healthy and well presented meal. And meetinyaletown never disappoints with their tacos 👌 

I’ve definitely been eating out a lot more since I’ve been moving and renovating because I don’t my cooking environment. It’s been a bit of a struggle but you can ALWAYS find health foods on the go. Sometimes that means popping  it a grocery store and grabbing a piece of fruit or carting along a bag of walnuts with you but, hey 🤷‍♀️ you gotta do what you gotta do. If you want results, you have to act.

✈️Traveling humbles me. I realize what a tiny place I occupy in the world. It puts my self importance and privilege into perspective. It makes me a better human. 

🍁I live in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and it’s a bit of a bubble. I have access to absolutely anything my heart could desire from food to activities to culture to adventure and beyond. I could jump in the ocean in the morning and snowboard in the evening. I could have vegan chicken and waffles for breakfast, vegan sushi for lunch, vegan Greek food for dinner and stop off for vegan gelato while taking a stroll around our lovely seawall. There is nothing I can experience in this place almost 24/7. I travel to other countries and even provinces and I am quickly put into check. Not everyone has access to delicious vegan food 24/7 (I did come up during the steamed rice, fries and seasonal veg era so I remember what this is like) and not everyone has access to beautiful and safe walking, running and hiking trails etc. if I don’t travel for an extended period of time, I begin to lose perspective. If you have the ability to travel, even if you have to do it by bike, car, train, ferry etc. I encourage you to take every opportunity to explore. Travel changes who you are.

Some of you will say “but it’s not healthy” actually, if you have a look at the nutrition and ingredient info, they’re pretty good. They have a great nutritional profile, relatively low in fat compared to other nuggets and have a great amount of protein. Obviously you should not eat the entire bag but a serving or two depending on your goals, health and TDEE is fine every not and then.

I LOVE tofu - silken, soft, medium, firm, extra firm, pressed, shredded, smoked, fried, popped not to mention the rest of the soy products I consumer on a regular basis like soy curls, miso, edamame, tempeh, soy milk etc. Soy is used in a variety of ways and it has been for centuries. NO soy does not contain estrogen, yes, soy contains phytoestrogens just like EVERY plant food. 

Did you know tofu is also a KETO friendly food? Most people don’t realize that, but it is.

Brunch of champions 🏆 These tiramisu pancakes were the best pancakes I’ve ever eaten 🙌 I seriously have to get better at making pancakes. 

The one place I find it super hard to eat is at breakfast places or at Omni restaurants for brunch. Typically the vegan option is avocado toast or oatmeal - Neither of which I often want. When I get the opportunity to go for bunch or breakfast at a vegan place, it’s really exciting for me! Especially when it’s with other people who are plant based and appreciate it 🌱💛

I’m so grateful to live in a city where there are vegan restaurants and options pretty much everywhere but breakfast and brunch options are still limited. milaplantbased has really brought their A-game with their brunch in the last couple of years. I hope more vegan restaurants take note and start offering brunch.

There are so many factors that affect your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), many of which, we don’t have control over. You may not be able to control everything but you can certainly control FOR these factors in terms of intake 🍎

I have worked with hundreds of individuals who have stuggled with weight and I will tell you, it’s always about calories ✨ Do your “hormones” play a factor? YES! They are part of this equation. Your hormones affect how many calories you’re using and storing as well as how hungry you are. So yes, it’s always about hormones but “hormone balancing” is just a buzz word. Your hormones fluctuate all the time and that’s normal. Do some people need to control for factors impacting some particular hormones, yes but don’t fall for the one size fits all solution of “hormone balancing” - it’s much more intricate than that.

If you know me, then you know I spoil myself daily with self care rituals like elaborate baths, meditation, physical activity and chocolate 🧖‍♀️

How do you practice regular self care? 

When I feel like I need a little more self love I pick a few other tools from my self care kit. Because I have been busy with clinical work and reports this January, the goal is to unplug🔌 That means that my self care techniques are a bit different than if I were anxious or feeing down. 

This weekend I did some creative writing, painting and cooking for pleasure. I slowed down and halved my screen time, only checking my email TWICE over the 4 days away! I did only a couple of hours of clinical work and only what was absolutely necessary. 

PS. I actually love my regular clinical work and don’t find myself overwhelmed by it at all - it’s the annual reporting and the other stuff that piles on in January that doubles my work week. I don’t believe people should stay in positions they need vacations from regularly but that’s a rant for another day.
