Smith asked me before I left if I could compete with a sumo wrestler so I think that means I’m allowed to come home tomorrow.

Friendly reminder that a solid carb load & nailing your in-race fueling is key to feeling this strong in the last 10k of your marathon ✔️

My first marathon I took one gel off course + a few sips of water, had no clue what a carb load was, and thought I’d prolly rather sit down and take a nap than finish said final 10k.

Fast forward to a whole lot of learning, education, exams, and practice + we know a lot more about fueling & hydration for marathons now than we did in 2009…

This smile and ✌️✌️ brought to you at mile 22 of the 2024 berlinmarathon with adidasrunning by 3 days of 450+ g carbs for a carb load, 78 g carbs per hr + 705 mg sodium & 12 oz fluid per hour during the race, and a lot of practice behind the scenes.

Feels like a real crime that 40 years old = a master. 

But… contrary to popular belief that we are fed as we age, total energy needs actually don’t decline meaningfully until we are much, much older. Energy needs continue to reflect how much we are moving our body daily + the energy it takes to fuel our bodies to just stay alive daily.

You probably need more sodium than you think as a runner training in the summer heat. 

Did you know that a heavy sweater can lose more than our daily needs of sodium in just 1 hour running in the heat & humidity? 

The average sodium loss in sweat is 900 mg per liter, which is about 2# of sweat loss. 

When we do not replace our sodium losses, we more frequently experience urgent GI issues, muscle cramping, headaches, loss of appetite, decreased performance, delayed recovery, swelling of our hands & feet, salt cravings, and more.
