Travel peeps 📣 CAPTION THIS!

Introducing our latest travel fam addition
Miss Isa Meilin

Nothing replaces getting out there first-hand. Though I strongly believe having a traveler’s mindset and being a global citizen starts at home.

We can’t travel with Isa yet, but the boys thought she needed to start learning about the world 🙃🌏🌍🌎

BABYMOON yay 👍🏼 or nay 👎🏼?

Any excuse to travel is a good one to me! However in my first pregnancy, I cringed at the word “babymoon.” I first heard the idea paired with the association that travel would stop or couldn’t happen for a long time after having a baby.

Travel does change after having babies, but it absolutely does not need to stop!!

I am all for the idea of a babymoon to celebrate pregnancy and a new baby, spend quality time as a couple and simply just because you want to take a trip. I am not for the idea of a babymoon meaning this is your last trip for years.

Before our first we went on a babymoon to Kauai 🌺🤩. Before our second, we took one last trip as a family of 3 to Miami 🌴👙. And before our recent third, we did one last trip as a family of 4 to Greece 🇬🇷.

Did you go on a babymoon?? If so, where?

How to sum up 2021?? Weird! It was another tough year in more ways than one. Despite all the challenges, we had plenty to celebrate. And we still managed to get out there and take a few trips. So glad we managed to escape and adventure a bit!!

HEY travel fam! It's been a minute and then some. We didn't fall off the face of the earth, but we did disappear for a bit. Life got extra crazy and something had to give. No, not travel, never! 🤣 but I haven’t been able to share about travel, unfortunately.

Early this year we decided to sell our house, and then buy a new one and move. We're in the same area, just a new spot that feels more fitting for our family as we grow. AND grow we are as I'm pregnant, and we're expecting a baby girl in time for Christmas!

I hope to pop in every now and then to get my virtual travel fix. Hopefully, I can share about some travels, like how we spent a couple of weeks Island hopping in Greece in July - amazing! But I can’t make any promises.

Baby girl has a heart defect that will keep us occupied and home-bound for a bit. The goal is to make it to 4-6 months old and then she will need open-heart surgery. This is a whole other new kind of adventure we didn’t expect. And it will likely be a bit bumpy here and there, but we know she’s strong and we’ve got this. I’m planning to share this journey and some home life stuff over at ourmodernfamilee so check that out if you have any interest.

And don’t worry, we’ll be back. We know baby girl will eventually be a great addition to our travel team! She has made it to 4 countries in utero, so travel is already a part of her 😄

📸📍 Naxos Island, Greece - have you been? It’s known to be one of the more family-friendly islands and I loved it so much more than I thought I would!

Who else was excited to say 'see ya' 👋🏽 to 2020??

I'm not sure if anyone was immune to the troubles of 2020, it affected everyone in some way big or small. There were disappointments, grief, and countless challenges.

It was not all bad, but it's good to say hello to a new year 🎉🥂. There's no magic switch, or time machine, of course. 🦠 and other challenges are still our reality.

But I'm excited and hopeful for a better 2021. What are you hopeful for, or excited about in this new year?

We hope everyone enjoyed a safe and happy holiday season!!

CRUISE time 🚢 ! Before our RTW trip plans came together we had a BIG #familycruise already planned.

Big as in 18 family members, some from both my family and Steve’s family. While cruises aren’t my favorite way to travel, sometimes they’re a great option. When bringing together and organizing so many different people with different ages, interests, and schedules, a cruise was an easy way to do this.

It was great fun meeting so many family members in Italy, and exploring some of the Mediterranean all together! You’ll see some extra faces in my stories from the cruise destinations.

Do you ever take trips with extended family? Any good destination recommendations for a trip like this? We’ve been trying to dream up when and where we’ll do another big family trip. You know...when travel returns at some point......

Early Thanksgiving!

We knew we couldn’t see family for this Thanksgiving, but the boys had been talking about it so I still wanted to do something to celebrate. Growing up, Thanksgiving was always a big extended family ordeal, and my mom hosted. So I’ve helped in various ways over the years. We even hosted both our families a couple times, and they helped cook. This was the first time I cooked a whole #thanksgivingdinner myself! We celebrated with a couple families who we’re already in contact with from work and school and we ate outside. Thank you #socal weather! It was a different Thanksgiving than any other, but that’s #2020.

How are you celebrating this year?

BURANO 🌈 - #burano is an island in the Venetian lagoon that is about a 45 minute vaporetto ride from San Marco.

It’s like a brighter and smaller version of traditional Venice. It’s still full of canals and little boats, but the buildings are much smaller and only about 2,400 residents call it home. The colors are a treat and what attracts tourists to visit. While it may look like a random smattering of colors, it is planned, and homeowners have to have their color choices approved.

VENICE - Country 3/10 - Stop 11/25

Truth be told, I was worried about not enjoying Venice. While I dreamed of visiting for years, I’m always a little hesitant to travel to the most popular trip destinations. I don’t like crowds, and too many tourists can ruin my travel mood.

Thankfully, despite its popularity, I was not disappointed in Venice. It was even more charming and unique than I anticipated (seriously, there’s nowhere quite like it!). And while we visited in the busy summer season, and it was crowded, we were still able to enjoy it. Like in this photo, there were plenty of alleys where we were wandering all by ourselves, no one else in sight.

Sometimes you don’t have flexibility with your travel dates, but don’t let that hold you back from visiting where you want to go!

DO this/not that - VENICE version 🛶- 🇮🇹 for enjoying it beyond a crowded tourist trap:

✔ Do this: stay outside San Marco
✗ Not that: stay right near St. Mark's Square

✔ Do this: take vaporetto (public water bus)
✗ Not that: only take water taxis and gondolas (so expensive!)

✔ Do this: walk past crowded areas and get lost in the quieter alleys and canals
✗ Not that: only walk around San Marco

✔ Do this: opt for smaller restaurants away from the main attractions
✗ Not that: only eat at bigger restaurants near main attractions with picture menus

Buying attraction tickets in VENICE 🎟️ - Venice is one of those places where skip the line or timed tickets are worth it if you’re visiting during a busy season. You can save yourself hours of waiting time by planning your schedule.

This is pretty universally true in the biggest and busiest cities (NYC, Paris, Rome, etc.). Check the attraction websites directly for the best ticket deals, and you should be able to purchase tickets for a set date and time window. Alternatively, you can join a tour that purchases the tickets for you and usually involves skipping the line too.

How do you get the whole fam in a photo while on a trip? Easy ✨ flytographer

I take a ton of photos. I bring a tripod on most trips, and we use a timer. We ask people to take photos of us, but it’s still a struggle to get a decent 📸 that includes all of us. Most of the time I end up disappointed.

Which is why I love the idea of flytographer! I’ve been eyeing them for a while now. Even though we’re not traveling like usual, we decided to book a shoot with them near home. #gifted

Flytographer has amazing photographers in 300+ cities around the world to capture your vacation memories - or even your local home-town memories too! Next trip, don’t miss out on capturing those extra special moments. It’s so easy to know you can find a great, vetted, local photographer for almost any trip with this one resource.

I have never had the goal of visiting all 50 states. As I watch the #2020election results map populate, my thoughts and feelings on this are further validated (disappointingly).

Steve and I have discussed this many times. We would not feel comfortable traveling to certain states. Even though there are so many beautiful places worth visiting all over the US, our family’s comfort and safety take precedence.

Of course, I don’t expect to feel comfortable everywhere we travel. That’s actually part of the beauty of travel, being out of your comfort zone, pushing boundaries...this is often how you learn and grow. But in the case of some US states, it doesn’t feel worth it to us. And that’s a very sad thing to recognize about your own country.

Traveling to other countries where we were the minority, we’ve never felt unsafe and unwelcome. We’ve only experienced curiosity about our differences.

I’m white-passing with my hair straight, but when it’s curly most people think I’m Hispanic/Latina. But I’m not, I’m black and white. Steve is Asian. I’ve heard several racial slurs thrown at him directly to his face as we’ve just been going about our own business. And we’ve both experienced too many micro aggressions to count. And we’re privileged!! It’s not that bad for us. There are others I’m much more concerned about. Others who experience much worse. Rights and respect that should not be up for debate at all.

My parents were thinking of driving cross country after voting to visit us in CA. I don’t like that one of my first thoughts was worrying about their safety in regards to racial aggression.

I’m upset by how many people do not consider racism a dealbreaker. That other things are more important despite the current crisis.

Seeing greater diversity in wins for senate, congress, local elections and more is helping though. Our country is becoming more diverse, and this better represents the future of the US. #representationmatters

I’m appreciative of this space and connecting with more like-minded travelers. Thank you all for your support here, I appreciate it more than you know 🤗 And maybe one day I’ll change my mind and decide it’s okay to visit all the states. 2020-11-05 00:55:52 .. 366 +114% 51 +49%
I grew up in Connecticut apple picking frequently in fall and was missing it this season living in SoCal. So we went on a last-minute day trip to Oak Glen, only about an hour east of Orange County. Getting to make our own apple cider was the highlight for all of us, and we were so happy to be able to support rileysatlosrios. They recently experienced a devasting loss from a fire and are working to rebuild. ⁣
⁣
Little did we know, the very next day the #silveradofire would spark closing down the very road we traveled on to Oak Glen. I'm so glad we spontaneously took this day-venture. We haven't been doing this as much this year, but I miss it!⁣

Was planning to share this yesterday, but my Monday definitely did not go as planned. The #silveradofire continues to grow and burn only 6 miles from our house. We’re under mandatory evacuation orders until further notice. Hoping everyone is staying safe, especially the firefighters working to control it. I saw videos of tanakafarms where they’ve been experiencing wind and smoke damage. I hope it doesn’t go beyond this. We always have a great time here and visit in all different seasons. Recently we had so fun at their fall pumpkin picking experience - different from other years, but I thought they did a great job of coming up with a new 2020-safe plan.⁣

QUICK! What's the worst thing 🤔 about traveling with young kids?? ⁣
⁣
Did you think...car seats? 🛎 Ding ding ding! ⁣
⁣
Traveling with car seats is one of the toughest things about travel with toddlers in my opinion. Lugging 20+ pounds through an airport, in addition to everything else, is not the most fun. Luckily there are some geniuses over at hellowayb that have been working hard to make our lives as parents a little bit easier.⁣

HALLOWEEN-orona 🎃👻 What are your plans?? Are they different from other years?⁣
⁣
I got our costumes, but otherwise am undecided about what to do. The kids are so excited and have been talking about Halloween for months and months. But I don't know how it's really going to be, and what feels safe or not. They're still young, so they don't expect big things, but I know they want something 🍭! ⁣

A home away from home! This gorgeous Vrbo was exactly like a house we would love to own. One can dream....💭 ((If you want to see more of the house, check out my 'La Jolla' highlight bubble for a tour and more pics!))⁣
⁣
How do you pick a vacation rental home? Do you ever look for places that you would dream of living in?⁣
⁣
We actually have this game we like to play when we travel. Would we live here 🏠? And it can be as broad or narrow as would we live in this country? This city? So close to a beach? In the middle of a busy city? In this type of house? ⁣
⁣
Staying at a Vrbo allows us to experience life more like a local than a hotel does. And this helps fuel the fun of our little game 😊⁣

I’m still not on board with flying frequently, but luckily you can easily find a great Vrbo close to home, and still get away.⁣
⁣
As things have started to open back up and we’ve learned how to reduce our risk, we’ve been more comfortable taking some trips close to home. ⁣
⁣
Usually, the boys come up with a name for each Vrbo we stay at. But they couldn’t seem to settle on a single name for this one. We heard “beach house,” the “sand house,” and even the “elephant house.” 🐘🤷🏽‍♀️ They’re so kooky, but as long as they’re having fun 🤪😍⁣
⁣
We drove down to La Jolla for a long weekend. And even though it’s only about an hour away, changing up our scenery and leaving behind work helped us focus on some fun family quality time that was much needed. ⁣

GETTING to CATALINA ⛴🚁🚤 [SAVE this if you ever plan to visit Catalina!!]⁣
⁣
Catalina Island is a small island off the coast of Southern California, west of OC/LA. It’s one of California’s Channel Islands. ⁣
⁣
⬇️How to get to Catalina⬇️⁣
Ferry ⛴ - (most common) book tickets with Catalina Express or Catalina Flyer to get to the island (busy weekends book up). It takes about 1 hour. Ferries leave from 4 different ports between OC and southern LA (Dana Point, Newport, Long Beach, San Pedro). And there are two ports on the island - Two Harbors and (more popular) Avalon.⁣
⁣
Island Express Helicopter Service 🚁 - (fastest) get to the island quickly by booking a helicopter ride - only 15 minutes, but expensive⁣
⁣
Private charter boat 🚤 - if you have access to a private boat (invite us), or want to rent one, this is another way to get to Catalina.⁣
⁣
We had a great experience with catalinaexpress. I appreciated their safety and health protocols. Everyone was required to wear masks and they kept reminding passengers. Eating and drinking was allowed, but they encouraged quick sips and bites, no extended periods without a mask. We sat on the uppermost deck outside which was great for the views and air circulation.⁣
⁣
Elden & Orlo thought it was great too, getting there is half the fun to them!⁣

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL (a little delayed)...and such a perfect capture of both of their feelings about it 😂⁣
⁣
Did your kids start school? Are they virtual/home? In-person? A combo of the two? How is it going?⁣
⁣
These two are in preschool in person. Elden went back for his 3rd and last year of preschool, and he's going 3 days a week. This is Orlo's first year of preschool and he's starting with 2 days a week. It's a Mandarin immersion school so my kids count better in Chinese than in English 😆⁣
⁣
Their school has been open and operating safely without incident for a few months. This along with their multi-page document on all their new procedures and protocols made me feel okay with them going. I think it also helps that some of the owners and teachers are from Taiwan! ⁣

COLOSSEUM ⚔️ I was looking forward to seeing the Colosseum the most in Rome. Have you been or do you hope to see it someday?⁣
⁣
This is one of those things that you want to plan in advance and get your tickets ahead of time. You can walk up, day-of and get tickets, but you will have to wait much (much much, depending on time of year) longer. Either way, ideally it’s best to go first thing in the morning, if not, then go closer to closing time.⁣
⁣
You can buy tickets directly from the Colosseum and do it yourself. Or you can buy tickets through one of several tour companies. We (in a rare moment) opted for a private tour, and it was perfect. We got in a little easier with less of a wait with a tour, and it was fascinating hearing all the history as we experienced seeing everything. ⁣
⁣
The Colosseum was built in 70–80 AD and originally had a more luxurious facade made from travertine and noble seating with marble. Major earthquakes destroyed some of this, and later it was further stripped of its higher-end materials which were reused in other buildings.⁣
⁣
It was built for entertainment and to further exemplify the power of Rome to the rest of the world among other things. Seating was determined by social status.⁣
⁣
The Colosseum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the New7Wonders of the World. Being on the site of something so ancient and historically significant is mind-blowing to me 🤯 What have you seen that's blown your mind?⁣
