What stood out about Nidhi right from the start was how focused and driven she was, and how she could take on challenges with so much clarity and just get things done.

Her first project on her own was a huge one, 6,000 sq ft at 360 West. She handled everything, from managing contractors to keeping the clients updated, and she did it so well. The home turned out beautifully, and that one project led to three more in the same building.

In just three years, she’s grown into such a strong designer and leader. She now heads her own team, and I couldn’t be prouder of her.

Here’s something Nidhi shared too:

“My first independent project was for the Bagris at 360 West. 6,000 sq ft of design, decisions and deadlines. It was the kind of challenge that changes you. It’s been a huge privilege to work with Sarah Ma’am and be a part of the Essajees Atelier team. Her trust in me from day one has played a big role in helping me grow, build confidence and become a better designer.”

Nidhi, you are a rockstar through and through. Watching you grow into the designer and leader you are today has been incredible, and I can’t wait to see everything you achieve next.

If I had a dollar for every time someone told me we only get work because of social media, I’d be very rich by now. The truth is, most of our projects come through referrals, and that happens because of the kind of work we do in the studio. From the detailing to the way we treat clients, to the systems we follow, it’s all of that that makes people come back to us.

Of course, I won’t deny how much this Instagram community has helped us put our name out there. But the real reason we get work is often very different.

And honestly, if it worked that way, I’d be okay with it too.

When you’re designing a 5000 sq ft, 6-bedroom family home right in the middle of Mumbai, every little detail counts. In this bathroom, we focused on a few simple ideas that make the space easier to use and nicer to live in.

• The basin, the counter, and even the drain are made from one single piece of marble, so it stays neat and super easy to clean
• We’ve added two soft lights facing the mirror so there’s no shadow on your face while you get ready
• There’s storage that’s both closed (and ventilated) and open, so you can keep things hidden but still grab the stuff you use often
• A small built-in bench inside the shower area makes it easier for anyone to sit, scrub, or simply keep their feet up

Bathrooms don’t need to be complicated to be functional. If there’s one thing you’d take from this space and use in your own home, what would it be?

This 6,000 square foot home in Kolkata gave us so much room to play with different ideas, and one of our favourite spaces to design was the master bedroom.

For them, the bedroom had to feel like a space they could retreat to at the end of the day, somewhere that felt like theirs and worked for how they live. That was the thought behind everything we did here.

We carried warm wood across the floors, walls, and ceiling so the whole room felt seamless. A deep blue curved panel sits behind the bed, breaking up the wood and adding a strong focal point. The marble inlay across the floor adds just a hint of pattern, while the yellow chair brings in a pop of colour against the view of the city outside. We even tucked the AC vents into the wooden ceiling so nothing interrupts the look.

This room feels both bold and personal, and we loved bringing it together for them. What do you think of it? would you go for something this strong in your own home?

We’ve been lucky to design quite a few Foo restaurants over the years from Pune to Thane to Hyderabad and every time we get a new one, we feel just as excited and just as grateful. This one at Palladium felt especially fun because while they were looking for a completely fresh look, there were a few things we knew we’d carry forward. Some details are just non-negotiable at this point, and one of those is chair upholstery.

This might seem small, but it makes a huge difference. We’ve learned (the hard way) that you can do whatever fabric you like on the back of the chair. Printed, textured, colourful, go for it. But the seat? That’s where things get tricky. It’s a restaurant, food will spill. You can’t have a fabric that soaks things in. So we always use a wipeable material on the seat like a really good quality leatherite. It’s easy to clean, doesn’t absorb smells, and doesn’t stain easily. Especially in a place like Foo, where there’s chili oil and soy sauce and all the delicious mess that comes with an Asian menu.

It’s a small hack but one that’s saved us again and again. If you’re designing a restaurant or even a home dining space, this is something we’d recommend. What’s your go-to design trick that always works no matter the space? Tell us in the comments.

Flooring is something we don’t always think about, but it completely changes how a space feels. In a restaurant like Foo, where the food is vibrant and the energy is high, the flooring couldn’t just be simple. It had to feel like a part of their story.

When we started Foo Palladium, the logo really stood out to us, it’s curvy, soft, and fun. We thought, why not bring that same feeling into the space? That’s how the idea of the curved flooring came in. It wasn’t only to make it look different, but to let the whole place feel like it’s moving with you. The curve almost pulls you along and makes the space feel alive, which is exactly how Foo is as a brand.

We’ve worked on many restaurants before, but this one was special because it also felt like a little rebrand for them. We loved being part of that. What do you think? do details like this catch your eye when you walk into a space?

Usually, ACs can completely interrupt a nice ceiling layout, but here we decided to turn the problem into a design feature.

This bathroom is from a 5000 sq ft home we designed in the heart of South Mumbai. It’s a compact space, but we knew we wanted to do something a little bold with it. The client had chosen a very bright green marble that could easily feel overpowering in a bathroom. Strong colour, small space, it’s a risky combination, and can start looking quite dated if not handled carefully.

So here’s what we did to make it work:

- We used the green just on the basin counter and carried it up a little behind the mirror. Most of it gets hidden by the mirror anyway, so you get just a peek of it, nothing too loud.

- On the floor, we used the same marble again but cut into small inlay squares set inside white marble. That helped break up the colour and keep the flooring light.

- Inside the shower, we kept everything white except one wall. For that wall, we took small pieces of the green and white marble and made a mosaic pattern. It’s got this soft peppered effect and doesn’t feel dark at all.

It’s subtle, fresh and still adds colour without taking over the space. We actually love how it turned out. Would you try something like this in your own bathroom? Or is there another bold colour you’ve been thinking about using?

Every home has rooms that don’t look or feel the same, and that’s the beauty of design. In this house in Alipore, Kolkata, we created spaces that are completely different in mood but still flow together.

The entertainment room is dark and cozy, with a deep burgundy sofa, a sculptural table, and a patterned rug. The matte black ceiling and console make it sharp, while details like the zebra lamp keep it playful. Just next door, the vibe switches, a bright lounge with a rich blue sofa, hand-painted artwork, wood details, and soft light pouring in, making it feel open and warm.

Designing such opposite moods under one roof was so much fun, and we absolutely love how it turned out.

Some spaces really become the soul of the home. For this one, it was always going to be the mandir. It took over 500 hours to build, but the idea came to us much before that. We were inspired by the Kalpavruksh, the tree of life. It’s something that shows up across Indian art and mythology, and it felt like the right way to hold the energy of this space.

Here’s what went into making it:

• Designing a tree that moves across three walls, almost like it’s growing out of the space, not just placed into it.

• The base was made using brass and sand casting, so it had that rooted, organic feel, nothing too stiff or flat.

• Every branch was wire twisted by hand, with small beads added one by one to create depth and texture.

• For colour and contrast, we added inlay with pink jade, malachite, yellow honey, and red onyx, all chosen to feel rich without being loud.

• And the whole piece was iterated more than 10 times till it felt just right. It’s detailed, expressive, and something you keep finding new things in.

We love how this turned out. It’s intricate but still warm, traditional in its story but fresh in the way it sits within the home.
As someone who loves art, this one was really special to work on. What do you think of it? Would love to hear your thoughts.

11 years of Essajees Atelier. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that a business is only as strong as the people who build it, and stay.

From 4 of us in a basement to 60 of us today, this team is the heart of it all. Some of you have been here since the very beginning, through every season of chaos and change. Others chose us along the way, bringing your loyalty, talent, and trust into the fold.

To our team leaders, thank you for being our backbone. You’ve shown up, taken ownership, and shaped what this place feels like. You are the reason the two-week test worked. And the reason it keeps working. Through every loss, every lesson, and every growth spurt, what has stayed constant is this: Essajees isn’t just a design firm. It’s a place built by people who care.

Here’s to the team that makes Essajees what it is. And here’s to many more years of building together.

When we first got the brief for Foo at Phoenix Mills, we were so excited. It’s one of the most prized locations in the city, and we knew we wanted to do something special here. But the site came with an unexpected challenge, there weren’t any walls. Just windows and open space everywhere. It sounded great at first, but it meant we had to completely rethink how to make the restaurant feel inviting, comfortable, and functional without relying on traditional partitions.

We decided to use arches to make it all work. They break the restaurant into smaller sections, creating little pockets of intimacy without taking away from the scale. One of these arches even doubles up as a door so the restaurant can be closed off when needed, and the thickness of the walls gave us space to tuck in storage, service stations, and even artwork. It solved the practical problems while giving the space its own identity and warmth.

Now when you walk through Foo, you don’t feel like you’re in one big hall you feel like every corner has its own story. That’s why we love this project so much. What do you think about how we approached this? Would you have guessed there were no walls here at all?

This Kolkata home is full of little stories, and some of my favourite ones came together in the bedrooms. Each one feels different but still fits into the house in its own way.

The kids’ room was all about fun that can grow with him. We added a proper bed for the long run, a glowing arch with wallpaper tucked inside, playful 3D elements, and easy toy baskets that make clean-up less of a headache.

One of the guest rooms was designed as a sofa-cum-bed, so it can switch between a cosy lounge and a sleeping space. The other guest room was a complete experiment from floor to ceiling to bathroom, everything was done in black. It could have felt too much, but it actually turned out bold, dramatic, and very cool.

It’s always fun to see how each space takes on its own personality while everything still works together. Which of these rooms do you see yourself in? let me know in the comments below!

It took us 11 long years to get here. Eleven years of hard work, of building a studio brick by brick, and most importantly, of building a team I could rely on completely. From working out of my dad’s basement with just five people to now being a 60 member team across Bombay and Dubai, it’s been a slow process of putting systems in place and learning how to let go.

I realised just how far we’d come when I accidentally did the two-week test. I went on holiday with my kids and fully stepped away. No emails. No site visits. Just two quick calls in 18 days. And everything kept running smoothly. For the first time, I wasn’t holding it all together, and nothing fell apart.

It’s a privilege to step away and know that the work, the culture, and the rhythm will hold steady. But it’s also the result of years of hard work, trust, and building something that doesn’t need me in the room every day. I’ve always said I want to be the least important person in my business. This was the first time I really felt it. And it made me so grateful.

If you’re building something of your own, do you think your business would pass the two-week test?

trushaaa_ joined us straight out of college in 2021 and was the youngest in the office! But what always stood out about her was her curiosity to know everything and an eagerness to learn. Four years later, she’s a Project Lead handling everything from residential projects to commercial projects and she’s done them all like a champ and i’m so proud of her.  She is an absolute powerhouse!

Here’s something Trusha shared, too:

“When I joined, I was the youngest one here. But I never felt like the youngest voice in the room. That’s what EA does, it hands you responsibility and then trusts you to grow into it. In the last four years, I’ve designed restaurants, retail stores, offices, and homes, but the Waterfield Office and the JR NTR Home will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Trusha, you’re unstoppable. You’ve grown leaps and bounds every year, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes you next.

We’ve taken you through three bedrooms so far, each one for a different generation, each one with its own personality. And now we’ve landed at the fourth.

The youngest member of the family, the one who’s still figuring out what she loves and what she’s going to grow into. Designing for a child always feels a little different, because you’re not just thinking about today, you’re thinking about the next ten or fifteen years.

This room had to be fun. It had to feel personal. But it also had to grow with her, here is how we tried to establish that:

- The wallpaper across the main wall is playful, with animals and soft stripes but easy to switch out when she wants a change

- We went with a queen bed, layered with super fun and cute bedding and cushions that made us all smile.

- Her wardrobe is one of our favourites, inspired by jigsaw puzzles with colour-blocked shutters and warm wood

- The back-painted glass panel works as a drawing board, perfect for notes, doodles or random little scribbles

- The dressing table is low enough for her now and something she can use for years, and the bathroom brings it all together, colourful and full of energy, just like her

This was the last of the four bedrooms, and honestly, such a fun way to wrap up this journey. what were your thoughts on this room? let us know in the comments below!

This living room went viral on Instagram and for all the right reasons. In this 5000 sqft Kolkata home, here’s what makes the space so special:

- The absolute superstar: a 22-foot-tall marble wall, fully hand-crafted, took us over five months and completely transforms the double height living room.

- To carry that sense of fluidity, we conceptualised the flooring with a mix of wood and marble with a brass strip inlay.

- Flowing right from the living is the dining and kitchen. There’s a dining table with a custom chandelier and a show kitchen with a separate wet kitchen tucked at the back where all the heavy lifting takes place.

And finally, this living room opens into the den, making the whole space feeling connected when needed and you can close it off for privacy.

Would love to know which detail here is your favorite, for us the marble wall will always remain special! ✨

This home was built for four generations, and each one came with its own vision, priorities, and way of living. That’s what made this project so special, and honestly one of the most exciting homes we’ve ever designed.

This space belongs to the second generation, the parents. Their brief was clear from the start. They wanted something elegant, comfortable, and timeless. A space that felt easy to live in but still had a quiet sense of luxury. Something they could relax in and enjoy every single day.

• We used soft marble flooring across the space to keep it feeling grounded and classic
• The ceiling is inspired by Rajasthani shapes but reimagined with a soft, modern touch and a layer of indirect lighting tucked into the edge
• All wardrobes are done in textured panels that blend into the walls, keeping the space clean and uninterrupted
• The bathroom brings in detail with a marble inlay floor in a woven pattern, a basin carved into the counter, and a mirror broken into soft geometric slices

Designing for big families is always such a joy. You see the layers, the contrasts, and the love that builds up between generations, and getting to bring that into the design is what makes it all worth it. Would love to know what you think of this space. Does this one feel like your style?

Some people bring a quiet kind of strength to any room they are in and vishalmehta2000 is one of those people.

He’s one of the most patient people I know. Calm, funny and always pouring his heart into whatever he’s working on. He’s been with us for almost five years now, and has quietly become the person so many of us turn to when things feel messy or overwhelming.

He was Steffi’s favourite she would follow him around the office, nap under his desk and had a favourite spot which was on his lap. She was the actual boss of the office and Vishal was her bestie.

He’s been a part of some of the most beautiful projects we’ve completed and we have been so grateful to see him grow with each one of them !

And now here’s what Vishal has to share:

“Mittal Court will always stand out for me. It was the first site I handled, and the energy of that space, and the memories with the team, made it unforgettable. It’s been a journey of trial and error, learning every day and always aiming to be better, as a team and as a designer.”

We made this restaurant as an ode to the old, and still looking towards the future. An iconic brand, at one of India’s top locations.

Pops of red, patterned flooring and custom artwork make the space come alive. We made the booths feel a bit tucked in but still open enough so you never feel closed off. The arches behind continue the same soft curves we used throughout the restaurant, just a little more subtle here.

The deep wine red on the seats brings in warmth. All the artwork behind gives the space some character without shouting for attention.

It’s the kind of corner that feels calm and a little special.
We’d definitely sit here.
