Facts- Height is predominantly decided by genetics. Undernutrition will obviously prevent the child from reaching his/her height potential. Overnutrition will cause obesity, secretion of Leptin, a spurt in height, precocious puberty, and cessation of height growth earlier than the peers. An important point I missed out- please teach the children how to behave with animals, and do not leave your toddlers unattended near a pack of dogs. Do I give whey protein powder to my child? Not necessary, and potentially harmful. Too much protein can put pressure on the kidneys and liver.They can cause dehydration, indigestion, and kidney stones. It's better the child gets used to eating real food from the plate rather than gulping down whey protein. What if a paediatrician prescribes it for a medical condition? Select a good whey concentrate made for kids with the least number of ingredients, and no added sugars and artificial sweeteners. It's better it is spread over the day, and the child eats it than drinks it. Ensure good hydration. If you select the one made for adults, you may inadvertently end up giving more protein than that is recommended. Who gave you medical degree? Learn English! You do not know about biomarkers, nutrition, data etc. You are ignorant, fear mongering, misleading, irresponsible. Even hypothyroidism can cause raised creatinine. Whey protein is nothing but water left after making paneer. Learn to pronounce creatinine. It is ok to indulge kids in whey protein. All these comments after my reel warning parents about the trend among teenagers and young adults to overload themselves with protein and cheap protein powders. More than 2 grams/ kg/day is not recommended by any medical body. For a sedentary adult, it is 0.8 g/kg/day. If the adult is above 40 years, it is 1 to 1.2 g/kg/day. If the adult is exercising regularly, it is 1.1 to 1.5 g/ kg/day. For those into lifting weights and training for endurance, it is 1.2 to 1.7 g/kg/day. We are not talking about obese individuals trying to lose weight, about individuals into body building competitions, and competitive sports. Excessive protein can tax the kidneys and the liver, can dehydrate, can cause kidney stones, and can tilt the balance and cause CKD in those predisposed to Kidney disease. It has been my observation with some teenagers and even young adults, an obsession with protein, so much so that they are eating much more than the recommended upper limit and landing up with creatinine values of 1.4 to 1.5 mg/dl. Again, I am not talking about those taking creatine supplements. This is something we have to be careful about. We need to definitely check other biomarkers and measure GFR for these kids and guide them right. Moderation is the key. Do not overload! Do not deprive! This is not some study/data collection. This is my observation. Anything too much is not good! When you do need protein powder supplement, select it wisely. Select one with no added sugars, artificial sweeteners, stimulants etc., something you are not allergic/intolerant to. Eat it than drink it. Read the label properly. Rabies is fatal. Make sure your child gets the vaccine in the thigh or in the shoulder based on the age. No vaccine is to be administered in the buttocks. It has a high chance of being ineffective if administered so. Do not go by the misleading videos being circulated where vaccines are being given at the wrong sites and very quickly just to show off to the followers that child is happy. Vaccines have to be given slowly with the needle length being appropriate and at appropriate sites. Antibody injection at the wound site, is needed for category 3 bites as per WHO guidelines and for all bites/scratches as per CDC guidelines (asap, but atleast within 7 days of the 1st dose of the vaccine). If multiple bites are there, the calculated dose of the antibody has to be diluted with Normal Saline and be administered at all the sites of bite. If the child had received anti Rabies vaccine (complete schedule), he won't need anti Rabies vaccine again for 3 months even if there is a bite. After 3 months, if there is a bite/scratch, he has to be given only 2 doses of the vaccine, and not the antibody. *CATS, CATTLE, HORSES, BATS, MONKEYS CAN GET RABIES, AND BITES/SCRATCHES BY THEM CAN CAUSE RABIES TOO.
