The regenerative power of lasers is unmatched in helping to create a healthy skin bed. It DOES NOT replace a consistent skin regimen and sunscreen daily, but it does supercharge better skin by telling your body to get rid of the old collagen and bring in the new. And while most people think you have to do an aggressive laser, that is not always the case. It truly depends on your skin needs and whether you have consistently cared for your skin. I make it a point to do laser resurfacing at least twice a year for maintenance, and I try to do one within 2-3 weeks of my birthday so my skin is peaking as I am “aging.” I know it’s silly but it makes me feel better 😂. IYKYK

I just completed a pico for skin pigmentation, moxi for resurfacing of the face and neck, Tixel for resurfacing my eyes and Thermage for the face, neck and eyes ❤️.

🚨 Ever seen a 91-year-old arm that looks completely different from the leg right next to it?
That’s not “just aging” — it’s called dermatoporosis, also known as the osteoporosis of the skin.

It happens from chronic, daily sun exposure and makes the skin fragile, thin, and easily bruised.

Here are my 3 favorite ways to prevent it:
☀️ Sun sleeves for arms and hands
🧴 Daily sunscreen on arms (yes, body sunscreen matters!)
🚗 UVA-blocking car window tint

Already noticing changes? ✅ Retinol body creams, peptide moisturizers, and gentle exfoliants like lactic, mandelic, or glycolic acid can help support collagen and keep skin healthier, longer.

✨ Protect now, so your 91-year-old self will thank you.

✨ I still buy skincare, even though I’m gifted so much and I usually can get it for free through work (confessions of a skincare junkie).
✨ I am not always perfect with my regimen, if I’m too tired I have gone to sleep in makeup, just thrown on moisturizer and called it a day when I’m too tired for a multi-step regimen.
✨ I get a rush of happiness whenever I sit down and get a tweakment done on me - I totally understand why patients love to be in the chair - I am that person 😂.
✨ I was doing the most in my 20s and 30s. I was worried too much about aging when I should have appreciated my youthful skin.
✨ I used to be embarrassed about using too much sun protection and sun protective clothing, but now I really couldn’t care less what I look like as long as I’m happy and protected.
✨ Hormonal changes sneak up on you in your 40s (definitely happened to me), so a healthy foundation of collagen and skin really helps when your hormones start to peter.
✨ I really do suffer from imposter syndrome, and probably always will, even though I’ve been doing this for going on 15 years now.
✨ There was a time I stopped enjoying creating content for social media because of the pressure and sponsored content, but after I stepped back and recentered and posted solely what I loved and what I wanted to share with my patients and followers, I started enjoying it again.
✨ No matter how good you are with treatments and creams and sun protection - we ALL will age, you will see changes in your skin related to that and it’s ok. You can treat it or not - it’s YOUR choice.

Derm secrets from the drugstore aisle 👀🧴

You won’t believe the hacks we actually keep in their back pocket - and you can also ❤️

✨Superglue (yes, really) for cracked heels & foot fissures. Allows the skin to stay closed while the crack heals from the inside, if not every step you take it will reopen.

✨Lice lotion as a surprisingly effective rosacea soother - this one is the grossest - but hey whatever works ! The ingredient (ivermectin) is the same topical we use in prescription strength and sometimes orally for rosacea. You can try as a 10-15 min mask or leave on overnight.

✨Micellar water to melt off stubborn water-resistant sunscreen - I bet you thought it would never come off 😂

✨Athlete’s foot cream that doubles as diaper rash relief - I use this on my own kids - have it on subscribe at this point !

✨Dandruff shampoo to clear up superficial fungal infections - leave it on for 15 min on your skin in the shower for a couple weeks!

Sometimes the weirdest tricks are the ones that actually work. Would you try any of these?

BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe forehead lines, crow’s feet, frown lines, and vertical bands connecting the neck and jaw in adults (platysma bands).
-
Talk to your doctor about BOTOX® Cosmetic and whether it’s right for you. There are risks with this product—the effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic may spread hours to weeks after injection causing serious symptoms. Alert your doctor right away as difficulty swallowing, speaking, breathing, eye problems or muscle weakness can be a sign of a life-threatening condition. If this happens, do not drive a car, operate machinery, or do other dangerous activities. Patients with these conditions before injection are at the highest risk. Swallowing problems may last for several months. Side effects may include allergic reactions, neck and injection-site pain, fatigue and headache. Don’t receive BOTOX® Cosmetic if there’s a skin infection. Tell your doctor your medical history, muscle or nerve conditions, and medications, including botulinum toxins, as these may increase the risk of serious side effects.

Before we get into “how frozen should you feel” - this was an actual call over the weekend once 🤣🤣🤣.

So for those who do not know - neuromodulators like Botox, Dysport, Daxxify will all minimize muscle movement - that is their mechanism of action. So it is totally normal to have less movement after getting this treatment. We don’t want you to get so much that you look and feel like you are in a wind tunnel - and the way you look will be moderated by how much we use (also how much your muscles need to relax) and by area and desired effect. For example, some people need less on their forehead because too much will actually drop their eyebrows - so we leave a little wrinkling and movement on the forehead instead of using too much where your eyes look tired. There is usually a fine balance we strike for each patient - but in all cases, less movement is how it works ! 🫶🫶🫶

Some of these I hear all the time and I am always surprised that people don’t know these - so here goes:
❌ Most shampoos don’t grow hair - with the exception of an anti-dandruff shampoo if that is what you’re suffering from. Otherwise, save your $$$.
❌ Biotin won’t help unless you’re deficient - which is rare, and it can interfere with labs.
✅ Minoxidil 5% works for both men & women - don’t fall for the pink tax ladies !
❌ Rosemary oil = mostly hype
✅ No need for a scalp routine unless you have a scalp condition (like seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis) contributing to your hair loss.

Just like your sleep cycle, your skin follows a circadian rhythm — shifting between protection mode during the day and repair mode at night. While you sleep, your skin is repairing, renewing, and rebuilding.

If you are skipping your skincare at night, or not washing your face at night (i.e. leaving tons of dirt and makeup on), you aren’t doing yourself any favors.

Mostly because it is during this time that the skin is primed for repair and for absorbing products optimally.  Here are some of the changes that happen at night:
✨Skin barrier permeability increases allowing for better absorption of skincare actives.
✨DNA repair enzymes peak to fix UV damage.
✨Collagen synthesis and cell turnover are at their highest - using peptides and retinoids will amplify this function!
✨Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) increases, so hydration with an excellent moisturizer is important.
✨Speeds up cell turnover to reveal fresh skin - incorporating exfoliators will make this effect even better

Align with your skin’s circadian rhythm, and you’ll see the difference.

Want a sharper jawline without surgery? The secret might be in your neck and jawline - not a hokey device. Those vertical “neck bands” you see over time are from your platysma muscle and DAO, pulling downward on your lower face. By relaxing that muscle with Botox or other neuromodulators, we lift tension, smooth the neck, and give the jawline a subtle, snatched look.

Quick treatment, minimal downtime, dramatic glow-up.

It’s like how your mom was always right, but it takes time and experience and having those things actually happen to realize it 🙈. The sun is the cause of 90% of skin aging and the thing is that it is cumulative. So in your 20s you’ll have a glorious bronze glow, but as you age that tan translates to thinning skin, brown spots, easy bruising, crepey skin - and that’s about when we all panic and buy all the anti aging creams, slather on retinol, body creams and desperately search for treatments to correct this. Prevention is the best medicine so enjoy the sun, but do it responsibly and you won’t regret it.

This was literally my reaction watching this video because I’ve been thinking about the predatory nature of women’s marketing - specifically the “morning shed.” I get why people want to capitalize on it but it’s time to get real. Facial compression is only helpful if you have swelling after facial surgery - as indicated by your surgeon. It will NOT help to sculpt your jawline and chin, there are other treatments for this. It has been shown that people wearing masks to sleep actually have poor quality sleep and this will impair your overall look. Save your time, money, and sleep soundly. This, sadly, is a gimmick.

Sometimes the injector is the cause of the bleeding (well, actually the needle) - and everyone’s anatomy is variable so it can be impossible to predict where a blood vessel will be. However, there are things you can do as a patient to help improve your chances of bruising and bleeding. Avoidance of alcohol as well as these common supplements and medications can reduce your risk of bleeding and bruising during procedures with needles:
- Blood thinners (Aspirin, warfarin, clopidogrel, heparin) - if these are prescribed for a specific reason like blood clots or stroke, do not discontinue these for a cosmetic procedure without asking your doctor first
- NSAIDs: ibuprofen, and naproxen are often taken for headache, cramps or other types of pain, but if you have a filler appointment coming, make sure you think before you take it!
- Supplements and herbs: Fish oil/Omega-3s, Vitamin E, Ginkgo biloba, ginseng, turmeric, garlic (in high doses)
- Alcohol, especially wtihin 24-48 hours of injections, and especially red wine
- Green tea in large quantities has mild antiplatelet effects
- Red wine, ginger and cinnamon are natural blood thinners

Has this ever happened to you ?

Welcome to my new series: Derm math, because it seems that most of the “health influencers” recommend taking about 4,987 supplements, except oral Vitamin D - for that they recommend going out in the sun. Does this make sense?

Should you really be getting your vitamin D from the sun, your diet or a supplement? This is an important question because the ramifications of what you decide will impact your skin in terms of aging and skin cancer risk.

If you are fair-skinned and opt for unprotected sun exposure for Vitamin D, this translates to ~29 hours of unprotected midday sun every year to make enough vitamin D. Darker skin? You may need nearly 90 hours. That’s a LOT of UV — and a lot of potential damage in terms of skin cancer risk and sun damage/dark spots/collagen loss. Not to mention, this is a rough estimate of how much sun exposure you will need depending on your location, skin type, time of day etc (it could be more or less).

The truth is:
🧴 Vitamin D is essential.
🧬 It supports your immune system, bones, and even slows cellular aging, but you don’t need to sacrifice your skin to get it.
💊 Supplementing with D3 orally is safe, reliable, and dermatologist-approved — especially if you’re wearing SPF (like you should be 😉).
🐟It is available as part of a balanced diet in fatty fish (salmon, tuna), egg yolks, fortified foods, milk, cereal are also great sources of Vitamin D

Save this post if you’re team sun or supplement!
