Let’s talk BLOAT.
Gastric Dilatation and Volvulous.
A condition that *usually* happens in large to giant breed deep chested dogs.
Think Great Danes, Dobermans, GSD, Berners, Rotties, etc. but can definitely happen in any dog (and occasionally cats, and also commonly guinea pigs 🐽)
Basically what happens is the stomach physically flips over on itself and doesn’t allow the gas build up to go in or out. It fills up like a balloon and soon enough cuts off blood supply to the stomach. This happens RAPIDLY. Within 4-6 hours, and possibly sooner, that stomach begins to quite literally die off and/or will rupture.
So what are signs to look for, because we know EARLY intervention is KEY:
•Suddenly trying to vomit and not getting anything up (dry heaving)
•Extreme lethargy, doesn’t want to walk or stand - but also can’t get comfortable and extremely restless
•Profuse drooling
•Distended, firm, and growing left side of the abdomen
The ONLY way to treat “bloat” or GDV, is with emergent surgery. It’s that or nothing. With early and rapid intervention, the prognosis can be excellent and they can go on to live a healthy, normal life. With a likelihood of it reoccurring being less than approximately 2-5%.
Did you know that you can actually prevent bloat almost entirely? If you have an at risk breed PLEASE talk to your vet about a prophylactic gastropexy (surgery to “tack” the stomach) which is 95-99% effective in preventing this from ever happening.
This surgery can range upwards of $10-15,000 and even more if complications arise. So get them pexied and let’s avoid it altogether!

![🚨SOMETHING EVERY PET OWNER SHOULD KNOW 🚨
The J Stroke technique shown in the original video is a technique utilized to remove balls from the airways of dogs, typically large breed dogs that have been playing fetch and that ball is suddenly *poof* gone.
Occasionally dogs can still pass air around the ball if small enough, or positioned just right, or if the ball has a hole in the center (think kong rubber balls).
If your dog does not seem distressed and is still breathing fairly normally, GO DIRECTLY TO YOUR VET. They will likely need sedation to remove that ball.
If your pet truly cannot pass air:
1. Flip them on their back, and straddle their chest. This will likely require another set of hands because they may be panicking.
2. Place your hands on either side of their jaw, thumbs just behind the jaw/laryngeal region. Think of the Miami Hurricane’s U hands!
3. Use your thumbs to push UP and OUT to project that ball straight out of your dogs mouth.
4. PROCEED DIRECTLY TO THE VET. Even if they look relieved in the moment, cutting off air supply for ANY amount of time can cause damage to the lungs or brain and they should be seen immediately!

![4th of July is the WORST holiday for pets. I promise you, your dog does NOT care about a fireworks display. PLEASE LEAVE THEM HOME.
Even the best behaved, perfect recall dog, when terrified of loud noises will not know what to do or where to go if they get out during the fireworks.
Tips for surviving the 4th 🧨
- Put pets in an interior room with a TV on or music up to drown out the noise
- GET THEM DR*GS (if you haven’t already, your vet won’t be there to get you in on the 4th so call now!)
- If the party is happening at your house, do the above but ALSO make sure your pets microchip information is REGISTERED and UP TO DATE in the event a kid or grandparents wanders into the wrong room and lets them out while the front door happens to be propped open (it happens, trust me). A GPS collar or even a AppleTag on the collar is also a great resource for if they do get away!
And remember, July 4th fireworks usually start a day or two before, and will for SURE last the weekend, so be prepared for multiple days of chaos and celebrate wisely. 🫠 wearfigs #figsambassador #psa #veterinarian]()
