How does a skincare junkie survive lowlands_fest? 5 skincare marketing tricks I’ll never fall for again: 1️⃣ “Colour-changing” foundation/tinted sunscreen This is physically impossible. Those cool videos you see where a white cream magically changes to the persons skin colour? It’s just pigment in capsules that burst when you rub it in - the pigment doesn’t adapt to the skin tone. If it did, why would they need to sell the product in different shades? 2️⃣ “sheer, no white cast” mineral sunscreens Again, this is physically impossible. Mineral filters (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) are insoluble white powders. A white cast might be less noticeable on lighter skin tones, but without adding pigment to the formula, it will always leave a white cast. 3️⃣ “clean” or “natural” beauty and skincare This doesn’t mean anything. Or more precisely: it means something different to every person. Neither of these terms are regulated (like for example ‘vegan’ or ‘organic’ are), so there is no way for consumers to know if products with these terms on then actually align with the expectation a consumer has of them. In my opinion, these are just empty marketing terms, feeding off fear of the ‘dirty’ or ‘chemical’. 4️⃣ ”dermatologist approved” This means nothing - a brand could literally have found one dermatologist, ask them if they like the product, and put this statement on the jar. Claims like these mean very little unless there is context: how many dermatologists approve of it? Does a recognised board of them do? 5️⃣ “reef-safe” sunscreen or UV-filters I don’t have enough space in this caption to explain this properly but in short: the research just isn’t there to claim this about any UV-filter. Have you tried this one? I think niveanederland sunscreens and I just aren’t meant to be. I’ve tried a few over the years and so far the only I like (but not love) is the oil control one. Which is a shame, because they’re pretty affordable and easily accessible. Plus the classic Nivea scent is so nostalgic for me! Garnier has really stepped up their game, but I'm still a bit upset that the invisible version of their vitamin C sunscreen isn't available in drugstores in the Netherlands. The glow version just isn't for me. These are all pretty lightweight, but I'd say the Garnier BHA one and the La Roche-Posay are the most oily skin-friendly. Despite the Beauty of Joseon being the lighter version of their OG sunscreen, this is still the richest one of all my faves this year. FYI: all of these are chemical sunscreens. The only exception is the Paula's Choice which is a hybrid (both chemical and mineral filters + it's tinted), which is why it's really great if you suffer from pigmentation. 💸 ABOUT THE PRICES: you know me, I'm Dutch so I love a deal. I bought two products & here are my thoughts: - mattifying sunscreen: instant dislike. It works okay on bare skin but you can really feel it on your skin. It does not work layered with other skincare products at all: it pills horribly. - aha bha exfoliant (in the green bottle): I don’t know if this did anything 🤷🏼‍♀️ I used it for several weeks and while I didn’t break out or anything, my skin also didn’t feel particularly clear or soft like it does with other exfoliants. While I think hemanederland has lots of great skincare available, not all of them are winners! Here’s how: 1. Diligent with sun protection. Not just SPF daily, also wearing hats, avoiding sun at peak hours, using a tinted zinc stick on top of my sunscreen over my darkest melasma spots. 2. Anti-pigmentation ingredients in my skincare. I really rate the anti-pigment line from eucerin_nl as well as the larocheposay mela b3 line. As well as using serums with vitamin C (during the day), retinal (in the evening), glycolic acid, niacinamide, kojic acid, etc. 3. Treatments at a licensed medical beautician (huidtherapeut in Dutch). Especially micro needling with tranexamic acid and some stronger peels really helped get rid of some stubborn dark spots on my forehead! 4. In the summer, I take a poly podium supplement. There’s been some promising research on this improving melasma, and it did help prevent my spots getting darker in the summer I think! Obviously taking supplements is very personal so check with your doctor before taking any. For reference: the first photo is when my melasma was probably at its darkest, summer 2022. The other videos are from the past two years. Melasma (or sun spots) is so so hard to treat and I know it can be so frustrating. I think it’s never fully going to go away for me, and I guess it’ll always fluctuate (darker in summer, lighter in winter) but I feel like with these 4 it’s become a lot more manageable for me.
