For this year’s Ganesh Chathurti celebrations I took inspiration from the traditional Wada style of architecture from Maharashtra. I used plenty of cardboard to create several arched panels with thick cardboard sandwiched in between to create a 3-dimensional piece. I painted everything a rich brown which resembled the dark ornate wood typical of the Wada homes. I then added a roof with “terracotta shingles” made from strips of paper. Two crepe paper banana trees (tutorial reel coming soon) and a hand painted rangoli added to the scene perfect for the arrival of Ganapati Bapa. 2025-08-25 19:50:50 For this year’s Gan.. 1,913 +195% 219 +226%
I have always admired the high quality products made by bhaashabasics and this wood Ganesh rangoli is no exception. It came with colored powders to fill in but I couldn’t help using various grains for a natural look.

I embellished this jhula a few years ago using a base from shubbh__laabh . I created some shapes using crayola Model magic to add to the existing wood frame and decorated it all with 3-dimensional paint, gold paint, and mirror pieces. One of the best parts of this platform is being able to support local artists and small businesses. I was happy to discover tulikaa_ss an art store founded by an artist who creates hand painted pieces inspired by traditional Indian folk art here in the US. Check out her IG page and Etsy store to order your own pieces. They also offer custom pieces as well. 2025-08-07 18:28:51 One of the best parts of .. 465 -28% 23 -66%
The kasavu saree is an iconic symbol of Kerala. It is traditional a cotton handwoven saree in white or off-white with a woven thick gold zari border sometimes along with other stripes. The designs are on the minimal side but favors more on the elegance.
.
For this project I took an old weathered planted and started with a few coats of white spray paint. I then then used painters tape to mark off a border and few stripes. I followed this up with gold spray paint. Removing the tape revealed an elegant planter inspired by the kasavu saree. 2025-06-17 19:32:19 The kasavu saree is an ic.. 608 -6% 65 -3%
Phulkari is a traditional hand embroidery from the Punjab region. It translates to “flower work” and is named after the iconic stylized flower motifs. It was typically done with silk threads on heavy cotton fabrics. The contrast gives the embroidery its characteristic sheen.

For this project I was given an old IKEA Lac table to transform. I started by sanding, priming, and painting the table. I then added a border with the help of painters tape. I created a pattern on graph paper which would cover the table top and transferred it using transfer paper. Next instead of thread I used posca_usa paint pens to fill it all in. The silk threads are woven horizontally to fill in each shape. To emulate that I colored in the pattern in horizontal strides. I added some motifs to the sides of the table to finish it off. I would recommend adding a coat of clear varnish for protection. I would love to do this on a dresser or chest. 2025-05-30 19:59:51 Phulkari is a traditi.. 1,377 +113% 174 +159%
Comment “PEN” to get a link in your DM for the gold and silver pens I used to create this project.

The Benarasi saree is an iconic weave of India. It originated from Persian weavers who had migrated to Gujarat and then to Varanasi during the 14-15th centuries. During the Mughal era the weave flourished and became a specialty of Varanasi.
The saree is made of pure silk with designs woven in gold and silver thread or zari. The designs include florals, kalga (paisley), and jallar (vines). Depending on the design a full saree can take anywhere from 15 days to 6 months to weave.
.
For this project inspired by the woven motifs I recreated some on handmade jewel colored paper using gold and silver pens. I placed them in matching frames with a large mat to create a contemporary display. 2025-05-22 19:52:24 Comment “PEN” to get .. 467 -28% 131 +95%
Kantha work is an ancient embroidery technique that can be traced as far back as the Indus Valley Civilization and has now flourished in Eastern India and Bangladesh. The term “kantha” can be traced back to Sanskrit for the word for rag or old cloth. It is characterized by a simple running stitch which was traditionally used to repurpose old clothes and fabrics by sticking them together to create quilts and cushions. Over time the stitch was used to create motifs which have adorned sarees and other fabrics.

In this project I start off by taking a canvas and covering it with crumpled tissue paper using mod podge to create a textured background. I created a simple drawing on paper and transferred it to the canvas using a needed. I then began stitching using the holes created as guidance. I outlined and then filled in certain areas. This was a great way for me to learn about Kantha and create something representative in the process. 2025-05-09 21:08:48 Kantha work is an anc.. 848 +31% 100 +49%
Welcome back to my series where I create projects inspired by traditional textiles and embroidery. This time I take on the leheriya. Leheriya refers to a tie-dye technique from Rajasthan which results in a wavy diagonal line pattern. The term leheriya comes from the word leher, meaning wave, as the pattern resembles the sand waves of the dessert. The technique is usually applied to lighter fabrics such as linen, cotton, and chiffon and bright, vibrant colors are the most popular. Leheriya sarees, odhnis, and duppatas often have gota patti embroidery on them. Gota patti embroidery is an appliqué technique where leaf and petal shapes are cut from gold and silver trim and applied in decorative patterns and then outlined by gold thread.

Here I have created a similar leheriya pattern using painters tape and watercolors. I then added a motif using metallic washi tape which resembles gota pati. 2025-04-29 19:49:59 Welcome back to my serie.. 834 +29% 84 +25%
In this new series I will be creating projects inspired by traditional textiles and embroideries. I will be starting off with the what is considered the king of weaves, the Patan Patola.
It comes from the city of a Patan, Gujarat and is created by tying and dying individual thread to correspond to a pattern which is then woven together. It’s hallmark is that the front and reverse are an identical design which does not happen in other weaves. Each saree can take up to 6-9 months to create and currently only a few families still make them.

For this project I used bamboo skewers to represent the threads which are “woven” together. I created a pattern on paper and then transferred to the skewers which were placed down and secured in a single layer. I used various colored markers to mark off the design before taking the sticks apart and coloring around each once. I then put them all back together which would represent “weaving” and taped everything down. The front and reverse are identical like a true Patan Patola. I finally framed it to display. Creating this project truly made me appreciate the precision, expertise, and artistry that goes into creating full patola sarees. 2025-04-25 20:04:50 In this new ser.. 1,557 +140% 216 +221%

This is my idea of a fun rainy afternoon…crafting while listening to old Hindi film songs. I created these coasters using precut raw wood coasters from michaelsstores along with scrapbook paper from krishna_homedecor. I used some mod podge to secure the paper to the wood along with a layer on top before adding a coat of epoxy resin. Sharing the craft I made today with our mandir Bal Gokul kids in celebration of Ram Navmi. I know many have asked me to share such ideas so hope it is useful. I found small flags in bulk and provided washi tape and self adhesive gems to decorate. I created simple graphics they could color, cut, and glue in the center of the flag. For about 130 kids it was a successful craft and they got to use them for the celebrations and take home. 2025-04-06 23:53:52 Sharing the craft I made .. 0 -100% 17 -75%
The possibilities have been endless for these box trays from michaelsstores. This time I wanted to create a striped base and used painters tape to achieve it. For the feature of each box I wanted to create a Mughal floral motif. I found inspiration in some books I had and transferred an outlined image I drew into the center of the box. I used poscaoficial paint pens to color the motif and a black marker to outline and detail everything. I created 2 more boxes and attached them to a satin ribbon with some hot glue so I could hand them up. 2025-04-03 19:54:46 The possibilities have be.. 1,477 +128% 86 +28%

Some of my most beloved projects have been the canvas walls. They have been such an easy way to create an impactful display filling that empty wall. Most of these just use shades of paint, painters tape, a stencil or two, and sometimes small mirror pieces as an embellishment. Rounding out my Holi decor with some garland strands. I used velum paper of different colors to make these. The paper has a semitransparent quality and remind me of Capiz shells but you can also make these with colored paper. After cutting out circles and stringing them up on some thread I used a dab of hot glue to hold them in place. These were simple enough to make and made everything look festive. 2025-03-12 19:35:17 Rounding out my Holi deco.. 0 -100% 20 -70%
I couldn’t resist picking up this colorful wrapping paper from michaelsstores knowing it would be perfect for some Holi decor. I kept it simple this time and used it to make some bunting/toran. It was simple enough to create a template and cut out the shapes. I used some washi tape to add a trim and string them up on a piece of string. I love how classy it looks and still evokes the spirit of Holi. 2025-03-10 19:49:02 I couldn’t resist picki.. 0 -100% 18 -73%
