As part of our Design Miami. In Situ VIP Program, guests were transported by RangeRover to the studio of legendary designer Byung Hoon Choi (Atelier_Choi). A pioneer of Korean craft and contemporary design, Choi’s work blurs the boundaries between sculpture and function, nature and human touch, history and the present.

This intimate studio visit offered a rare glimpse into the designer’s world, where stone, wood, and metal are transformed into timeless works of art.

See his work in our first-ever exhibition in Seoul, “Illuminated: A Spotlight on Korean Design”, closing September 14. Access is complimentary, secure your ticket via the link in bio.

Partnering with Seoul Design Foundation, the event will take place at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (ddp_seoul) designed by Zaha Hadid. The exhibition takes its name from the Korean word “조명 (jo-myeong),” meaning to bring light. Curated by Hyeyoung Cho (gorgornia), the show spotlights the soul of Korean design on the global stage, gathering over 170 works from 71 renowned designers and 16 international galleries. Together, these pieces connect past and future through material, memory, and craft.

Opening September 2 in Seoul, “Illuminated: A Spotlight on Korean Design” celebrates Korean design’s devotion to thoughtful materiality and slow craftsmanship, featuring works such as:

jongjinpark_ceramics’s “Artistic Distorted Patchwork”, which layers porcelain slip onto hundreds of paper towels, creating a millefeuille vessel with rich textures inspired by traditional Moonjar craft.

kjoonyong’s “Yellowish Deep Gray Night” captures natural light’s ephemeral spectrum from dawn to dusk through a unique cast-blowing glass technique.

dahye_jeong__’s “A Time of Serenity” which reinterprets horsehair weaving inspired by traditional Korean millinery weaves, resulting in striking basket-shaped sculptures that embody time as an essential material.

These works reveal how Korean craftsmanship blends tradition with innovation to elevate material storytelling in contemporary design.

Opening September 2 in Seoul, “Illuminated: A Spotlight on Korean Design” will be Design Miami’s first exhibition under the new Design Miami. In Situ initiative. Bringing together works from Seoul and beyond, the show demonstrates how Korean designers adapt to international currents without losing their cultural roots.

MnjaeKim’s “Ruffled Chair” and “Lamp With Roof” balance architectural structure with soft, tactile finishes, reflecting a dialogue between Korean tradition and contemporary living.

“Paw Bench” by Hakmazing and Atelier_Sohn’s “Blue and Orange Bar Stool” reimagine everyday seating as a striking focal point transforming them into sculptural statements.

_Kwangho_Lee’s “Copper Enamel Chair” reveals a patina-rich surface that captures the movements in the joining of metal, while Jay Sae Jung Oh’s “Salvage Series Stool” elevates salvaged materials by unifying them into new forms.

WonminPark’s “Stone & Steel Bench” and WeonRhee’s “Unearthed Forms, Scotty” unite industrial strength with organic discovery through their sculptural presence.

These works embody Korean design’s versatility by fusing ideas, techniques, and cultures into the future of design.

In “Illuminated: A Spotlight on Korean Design”—our latest exhibition in Seoul opening this September—designers are reaching into the past to shape the future.

“Moon Jar” by Kim Dongjun continues the legacy of Joseon white porcelain through slow, wood-fired craftsmanship using self-sourced timber. Its bumpy surface is born from this historic process.

Dahyeon Yoo applies the techniques of Joseon-era rice straw crafts into sculptural leather forms from her “Harmony” series that speak to inner balance.

Byung Hoon Choi’s works “afterimage of beginning 018-499” and “afterimage of beginning 021-577” use wood, clay, granite, and stone to create a sculptural balance that bridges centuries and embraces nature’s beauty.

These works embrace historic techniques by transforming them into something new.

Irthi’s series brings the sophistication and exquisite detailing of luxury٬ handmade crafts to everyday items; making accessibility a central focus and creating a symbiotic relationship between rural makers and the urban markets that are served by them.

By weaving the worlds of Talli and marquetry together, IrthiCouncil and NadaDebs introduce an intricately crafted interpretation of the vessels traditionally carried by Bedouin women. The forms, typically used for copper pots, are translated into solid oak and woven with narratives uniting the journeys and expertise of craftsmen and craftswomen from different parts of the region. The result is a contemporary collection of three multifunctional bowls.
