I am not a professional upholsterer but have been an upholstery DIY enthusiast for over 20 years. I am showing you the way I choose to upholster in a timely manner.
I’m happy to share with you how I like to upholster antique chairs. I was able to take what was over an hours worth of work and trim it to under a minute, so that I could show you a little bit of my process.
There are many ways to upholster chairs. Some people remove old batting and fabric, but if the chair is in good shape I keep it in place.
Antique chairs typically have gimp trim, and I replace mine with fresh gimp. It usually peels right off since the glue is aged. Other people replace gimp or old piping with new piping in which the fabric of the new chair is sewn tightly around a fresh piece of canvas piping (with its seam concealed under the new fabric).
I use a staple gun, an assortment of hand pliers, an extension cord, an exacto blade, a flat head screw driver, professional sewing scissors (large and small) a hot temperature glue gun, fabric and hot glue in bulk.
Newer chairs can be put together with machinery or heavy duty staple guns. The piping they use is very hard to remove, so the best way to do it is by trimming out the plastic piping rather than pulling as you would with gimp. The same would be done for newer canvas piping.
I don’t remove the old fabric when I can maintain the integrity of the chair and it will not show through the new fabric. You can remove the fabric if need be with professional sewing scissors.
I use a flat head screw driver to insert & affix the back panel of the fabric to the chair. If the screw driver is unable to go under the wood, you can use hot glue and pull the fabric taught to keep the back panel in place.

To achieve this look simply add a pretty tablecloth to an outdoor table. Set up your table rod and attach swags of faux foliage with garden wire. Add real touch to tulip bouquets with garden wire (8 bunches). Attach floating votives with ribbon, fill with water and put in one garden rose, one hydrangea sprig, and two sprigs of baby’s breath. I tried out this fun way to transfer a pattern to a candle by using a napkin, wax paper and an iron. It was so simple and makes such a pretty addition to a tray display. Using my favorite- a blue and white toile pattern, the result was perfection! I used a set of 3 candles, but you can also use flameless candles to re-use them again. I have linked both in my Liketoknowit. The ones I used come with cute glass hurricanes that double as small bud vases. 💐
Directions:
Separate the napkin front from the backing.
Cut the patterned part to the size of the candle.
Cut out a piece of wax paper (enough to wrap the candle in).
Carefully iron the wax paper so that you can see the wax melting a little underneath.
Pull off the wax paper carefully.
Ta Da! You’ve made a custom candle 🕯️ perfect for Easter tray styling!💗

There are many ways to upholster benches and stools. Some people remove old batting and fabric, but if the stool is in good shape I keep it in place.
Antique stools typically have gimp trim, and I replace mine with fresh gimp. It usually peels right off since the glue is aged. Other people replace gimp or old piping with new piping in which the fabric of the new stool is sewn tightly around a fresh piece of canvas piping (with its seam concealed under the new fabric).

![You can’t pass up an opportunity when it comes calling. I’ve been in the market for a small French writing desk for our bedroom in our new home. I managed to find one and purchased it for a song. Desks like these Louis XV demilunes can run around $5000. The intricate gold embossed leather inlays to their marble toppers, these show-stopping desks have the perfect footprint for a corner space. I shined up the brass by hand, painted the wood a striking white, embellished it with gold paint, and I added a clear coat to seal. I am thrilled with the result, and it creates another zone to get things accomplished at.
