In the Maddock office — a multi-storeyed space buzzing with creativity, we saw blank walls not as constraints, but as canvases. When working with in corporate spaces, we knew we had to stretch our imagination, not our spend. So we turned to one of the most expressive tools: paint. From quirky quotes that spark conversation to graffiti-style art that energizes a corner, we let each wall say something. Some inspired thought, some invited a smile — and others simply became striking backdrops that elevated the everyday. They say first impressions last — and in a home, it all begins at the entrance. This entrance foyer in a family home in Hyderabad was relatively compact — but I saw it as an opportunity to make a bold first impression, and when space is limited, intention becomes everything. So we began with the shutters — what looks like a bold, artistic backdrop is actually a concealed shoe cabinet. We hid functionality behind beauty, commissioning detailed, hand-painted shutters inspired by Indian miniature art, where each motif is detailed with precision and patience. To add depth, we flanked the space with French wooden doors dressed in sheer Parsi curtains. They let in light, keep it airy, and still preserve a sense of privacy — quietly elegant, without overpowering the space. And grounding it all is the classic black-and-white checkered floor that plays beautifully against the richness of the teal, bringing the whole palette to life. For this home, I wanted one element that felt personal, rooted, and unmistakably Indian — without interrupting the contemporary flow. So I chose the open face of the kitchen counter, the side that greets you from the living room, as my canvas. Restoring a decades-old bungalow in the heart of Delhi is no small task, especially when the brief is to bring it back to its original soul. No frills, no shortcuts, just patience, intuition, and a deep respect for what once was. We peeled back layers, quite literally, to return this bungalow to its roots — its original layout, flow, and quiet dignity. It’s a home that holds weight. Not just architecturally, but symbolically. Hyderabad Home, 2020 When we began designing this home temple, I knew I didn’t want it to be just another sacred corner — I wanted it to evoke a feeling. A space that commands silence, devotion, and awe, all at once. That’s when the idea of hand painting came in. We took a bold route with the colour — a striking, unapologetic red. One that would usually be considered overpowering for a temple, but for me, it felt exactly right. Because what softened it, anchored it, and ultimately brought peace into the space was the hand-painted detailing that followed. We invited artists from Jaipur, true masters of their craft, to paint the walls, ceiling, and panels entirely by hand. Two artists painted tirelessly for almost 90 days to bring this temple to life. Every motif was rooted in tradition, but interpreted with a quiet finesse that only handwork can offer. Stroke by stroke, layer by layer, they brought an intricate stillness to the red. Design Diaries | House No. 127 - Jubilee Hills, 2024 During our initial conversations, the client shared her love for layers, print, and warmth, but with this being a space occasionally used by their daughter, we had to strike the perfect balance — beautiful, thoughtful, and cost-effective. Instead of expensive art, I got creative with postcards from the New York Botanical Garden nybg, framed them using gift wrapping paper for mounts, and layered them over a soft printed wallpaper backdrop. It brought personality, charm, and just the right touch of nostalgia. The vintage family trunk became a meaningful detail — hand-painted by the grandchildren of the house, making it a true family heirloom reimagined. To add a vibrant corner, I designed layered window seating with pops of color through handpicked textiles, perfect for cozy reading or soaking in the lush Jubilee Hills view.
