![Our first few days in Japan (keep scrolling 🤭) 💌 from samurai museums in Asakusa, early morning walks around Tsukiji Market, 24 hour ramen spots and eating it for breakfast after a jet lagged early wake up, watching takoyaki being freshly made and burning our mouths from excitedly eating it (despite the warning beforehand), sightseeing cruise on a pirate-themed ship around Lake Ashinoko in Hakone, ducking into tiny hole-in-the-wall eateries and having the best meals, learning about Japanese rituals before visiting the temples, spending the morning at Sensō-Ji (Tokyo’s oldest temple), enjoying a 3D custom latte of jiggly Totoros in Harajuku, drooling over a party of oysters the size of my hand to walking around Asakusa against the backdrop of Tokyo SkyTree greeting us…
…These are just some of the moments we’ve experienced on the first 3 days of our Premium Japan group tour with intrepidtravel so far and we have 9 days to go! Incredible. Seeing Japan with a local tour leader and through P’s fresh eyes for his first visit is making this visit to Japan extraordinarily more special. Thank you, Intrepid.

![No menu, 5 courses + Google translate only. I’m in Hiroshima with intrepidtravel on their Premium Japan tour and we had a free evening so I was doing some research on where to eat in Hiroshima.
Came across this Reddit thread which peaked my interest… “best culinary experience in Hiroshima?!” Cross checked it with reviews on Google and Tabelog where locals seemed to enjoy it so we decided to give it a go!
The owner/chef was so surprised to see us when we walked in and explained it was omakase (chef’s choice) with no menu but he’ll ask what we like, what we don’t like and what we don’t eat (we said we eat everything). What followed were 5 courses of reimagined Japanese classic dishes with a western style plating and preparation: sashimi, fresh sardines, grilled steak, omurice and adzuki red bean and green tea homemade ice cream). Chef prepared everything with so much focus, concentration and passion. Was beautiful to witness and we felt so lucky to enjoy his cooking.
When we first arrived, there were only 2 local besties dining and they seemed so curious how we found the restaurant. When they left, we had the honour of having chef to ourselves preparing us a private meal! Afterwards, we chatted on Google translate where he asked our thoughts on the Thames Barrier in London and we shared stories about each other’s lives. So wholesome.
It was ¥16,300 (£81.79/$110 USD) for the both of us including two rounds of sake!

Hida beef may not be as well known as Kobe but it’s just as good.
I’m currently in Takayama with intrepidtravel on their Premium Japan tour — an Edo-period historical town full of charm in the Japanese alps. A rich history aside with plenty of culture, intricate architecture and both traditional and contemporary museums, it’s also known for Hida beef, a type of wagyu that’s available and priced accessibly from street food, local izakayas to fine dining… so we’re putting that to the test!
Must try’s include grilled Hida miso steak, Hida beef croquette, Hida beef skewers, Midarashi dango and kinako warabimochi to name a few!
Japan is one of the best places in the world for food and it can be more affordable than you think! (Even if we couldn’t resist and went over budget hehe)

![Save this seafood restaurant in Tokyo 🇯🇵 Yes, the prices are high but given the location and the quality of the ingredients, this was one of the best things I’ve eaten in a loooong time. We were staying near Tsukiji Market when a thunderstorm happened and an intense jet lag-fuelled craving for uni topped kaisen-don happened.
A seafood rice bowl topped with tuna, 3 varieties of sea urchin, salmon roe and nori made for a delicious meal made better by an uni tasting of 5 different kinds sourced from in and around Hokkaido!

![ad Surprised him with a private onsen in Japan 🥹 when it comes to tattoos and hot springs, a lot of bathhouses with communal onsens won’t allow guests with tattoos to enter or will provide stickers to cover them up and it’s important to respect those customs.
However, I’m on intrepidtravel’s Premium Japan tour and their feature stay on this trip is in Hakone with a private onsen in each of our rooms!!! My fiancé was worried about not being able to join the onsen and to find alternative options… but I secretly knew this was the plan and surprised him with the news! He LOVED IT 🥹 and it’s such a great option for those with tattoos who still would want to enjoy the experience without breaking rules or traditions!

You’re either chased around the shop with every single flaw being listed out to you by the staff or given a once over and told you’re an extra extra extra extra extra large 😂
Have spoken about this before but the obsession with skin whitening products is on another level in East Asia — the beauty standards are very different and it’s often reinforced to shoppers that they “NEED” certain products in order to fit in with the looks there. A reminder that you are fine just as you are and a firm but polite “I’m not interested in this, thank you” usually does the trick!

Made an appointment with Yuji from atlantisvintagetokyo in Kōenji and had the best experience. Incredibly knowledgeable, a licensed reseller and was guiding me through different styles as well as what to look for (to even recommending an aftercare specialist based in London!)
If you’re interested in a particular style (I saw everything from vintage Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Chanel Diana, Birkin, Loewe to Chanel Classic Double Flaps and the Celine Luggage), I’d suggest messaging the team beforehand to get an idea of what they’re offering and pricing as well as checking on the website!
Outside of vintage shopping in Tokyo, Japan has been so dreamy to travel around with a lot of cultural visits. Can’t wait to share more with what we’ve been up to, this was pre-tour hehehe.

![Bag reveal of my vintage Chanel in Tokyo 🥹🖤 I actually ended up getting two different vintage bags and Japan is one of the best places for thrifting vintage designer clothes and vintage designer bags.
This is atlantisvintagetokyo in Kōenji, a neighbourhood frequented by locals to source well curated vintage goods and I had an appointment booked on Instagram with Yuji.
The store was recently refurbished and stocked vintage Hermes, Loewe, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, all the classics and were reasonably priced considering its quality and compared to the 25+ stores we visited around Shinjuku, Ginza, Shibuya and Nakameguro.
I tried on a beige Chanel, a Diana (iconic and also no longer in production) but I had my heart set on a vintage medium Chanel double flap, particularly from the early 90s. and the bags before 2008 is made with 24k gold hardware with the hallmark stamped on the logo. But after trying them on, I loved the small even more. In terms of it being fake, counterfeit products are taken very seriously in Japan and it’s strictly regulated but still, make sure you’re visiting a licensed reseller like Yuji, who’s an absolute gem and we became besties by the end. We were smelling the bags, checking the serial number and the bag’s condition. I love buying vintage or secondhand, one because of the value, it gives bags another lease of life and I adore imagining the story behind it with its previous owners.

![Nothing like an impulsive haircut abroad 😂 P wanted to check out a few concept stores in Kamimeguro, a lovely neighbourhood with a great selection of vintage stores and coffee shops, so I decided to get a haircut at the salon near the station except… it was a walk in… and I didn’t speak Japanese… this is how it turned out! I have thick, coarse and stubborn Asian hair that is becoming increasingly more naturally wavy and curly (frizzy when exposed to humidity) so always looking for Asian hairstylists who know how best to treat it!
My incredible stylist had 20 years of experience and knew immediately what to do! tana_0504! Huge thank you to tatfung.h for translating and being so incredibly lovely and helpful, a chance meeting and turned out Terry is from Hong Kong, lived in Australia and spoke Cantonese as well as Japanese and English!
The salon is Hair Make Ash and it cost ¥4760 (£24/$32 USD) for a cut and blowdry!

![Go in shopping, come out humbled 🤒 pov: you go clothes shopping in Hong Kong and get insulted for free. I used to dread (and still do, to a degree) of going clothes shopping in HK. It’s the full once over then the long pause when you ask if they have other sizes in stock before being politely (but aggressively) told that you’d need their larger sizes — which is absolutely fine — but it’s the unnecessary comments that get me 😂😭 the shops assistants have nailed being able to say so much through a smile.
The shops here cater to generally more “petite” frames so even if you were to shop at the same chains like Uniqlo/Zara/Mango - it’s always worth double checking with a try on to see if it’s different from the measurements back home!

![AD Talking about money in Chinese culture… I grew up in a working class immigrant family in England. My parents worked long hours at our Chinese takeaway, often clocking in 12-16 hour days along with 3 girls under 5 to look after and feed.
Money was scarce but when it comes to Chinese culture, it was always talked about. We didn’t have the monzo Book of Money back then and we definitely weren’t born into generational wealth either. The Book of Money is now available to buy.

![Please watch this before going to HHN 😭 My first ever Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando made me lose my voice hahha. There are 10 haunted houses which includes 5 IPs like Five Nights at Freddy’s Terrifier, Jason Universe (Friday the 13th), Fallout and WWE: The Horrors of the Wyatt Sicks along with 5 original houses like El Artista: A Spanish Haunting.
There’s also 4 scare zones including a vampire masquerade ball, The Cat Lady of Crooked Lane, Mutation: Toxic Twenties and The Origins of Horror. Absolutely stay for Nightmare Fuel: Circus of Decay for an incredible show as well as the themed food and drink!
That aside, we also had a blast around Epic Universe (especially Dark Universe at night going on Curse of the Werewolf and Monsters: Unchained!), Islands of Adventure and the Horror Makeup Show at Universal Studios (more on this later).

![Immigrants are not “lazy” for not having a “native” English accent. I made a video speaking about my parents’ strong Chinese accent and came across a comment that branded people with accented English as lazy and to work harder at “mastering the native sound”.
Not only does this attitude reinforce an harmful hierarchy between global English speakers but perpetuates a restrictive, discriminatory and outdated view that positions supposed “native” speakers of English, particularly from Western cultures, as being culturally and linguistically superior — and completely undervalues the skills and intelligence it takes for those who speak or are trying to learn English as an additional language to their mother tongue.
Telling immigrants to “not be lazy” and to “make more effort” to learn English comes from a huge position of privilege and doesn’t take into consideration the circumstances that prohibit them from having the time, money, resources, opportunity or access to learn the language.
While my parents were busy working 16 hour days trying to survive, learning a “native” accent is low on their priority list, and it’s attitudes like this that made my parent feel the need to over apologise and feel belittled to even try to practice their English - knowing their accent and attempts would be used against them.
But accent discrimination doesn’t just affect immigrants — there’s regional accent bias too. There’s an estimated 37 dialects within the UK alone and a further 1.5 billion English speakers around the world. So who gets to decide what’s native? And who has the right to tell others how they should or shouldn’t sound?
Language is a tool to communicate, a gift that enriches and strengthens our relationships with others. And nobody should ever feel like they have to erase parts of themselves in order to assimilate for approval.
Before branding others as “lazy” for embracing their own accents, I’d use that time to practice some damn empathy.

![My parents have a strong Chinese accent when they speak English. Over the years, I watched strangers mock and mimic their accents, over-enunciate words in condescending tones and laugh adding in “ni hao” and “konnichiwa” in between their sentences. My parents would nervously laugh and repeatedly apologise saying “sorry, sorry, my English isn’t good, sorry, my daughter will speak for me instead”. As a result, I was always pushed to be the interpreter for the family.
But I always wanted to fight back. Maybe it’s because I’m the eldest or maybe it’s because I’m fiercely protective over my loved ones - but witnessing this always made me see fire. How dare they make my parents feel inferior?
“THEY CAN SPEAK THREE CHNESE DIALECTS FLUENTLY ALONE” I’d want to shout. But my parents would sense this and tell me to duck my head, to not make a scene and to be quiet.
“We should be grateful we’re even allowed to live in this country” they’d say. “Never cause trouble, just work hard and try to ignore it. Don’t draw attention to yourself.”
But who gets to decide how and what they should sound like? And how can we make sure linguistic diversity is celebrated more? How do we tackle accent discrimination in society and the workplace?
Despite the incredible range of linguistic diversity in Britain alone with world varieties of English all across the globe, accent discrimination unfortunately happens and whether intentionally or not - can seep into conscious or unconscious bias with non-native speakers sadly being the target for judgement and prejudice. I’m mindful, more than ever, of how our accents contribute towards our identity.
I’ve never been embarrassed about my parents’ accent and I never will. I will never stop celebrating its diversity. Accents are beautiful. Accents represent our rich culture and heritage. Accents represent who we are and we all have one so let’s be damn proud of it.

![ad My relationship with my fiancé’s mum 🇬🇷 My fiancé’s mum doesn’t speak English and I don’t speak Greek but we both do speak the language of food. I’m very lucky to call her my future mother-in-law but to me, she’s been a second mum to me from day one. She owns a restaurant and farm on top of a hill overlooking the city of Volos in Greece and like my mum, every time we see her, she cooks up a feast.
After two weeks of island hopping around Greece, the Asian food craving hit and mumma made me this avgolemono, a Greek lemon chicken rice dish that reminded me of Chinese congee.
She kept nervously saying “are you sure you’re happy with just this? I can make you anything you like that isn’t so simple” but in that moment, that dish was everything to me.
Days later, mumma told me that this was the exact dish she asked her own mother to make for her and there was something so beautifully poetic about this full circle moment.
“I want to make sure all my children are well fed” she said. Obviously, that made me cry. Another day, we came back from drinks with friends and she made me a noodle soup with Greek seasoning and said it was her first time but she saw on my reels that I like noodle soup and brothy dishes.
I don’t need lavish gifts or expensive meals because when it comes from the heart with the intention of wanting others to be happy, that’s the purest form of love there is. And now with a wedding to plan, we’re always checking our saved flights on Skyscanner to Greece to track prices and routes as that’s where we’re hoping to have our wedding celebrations!
We might not yet speak the same language but in that moment, we understood each other exactly as we are and for that, I’m so grateful.
