My Dad sent me this photo of me at birth 40 years ago. Which caught me off guard since he rarely sends anything sentimental. I feel like at this stage in both our lives, we are both grateful for each other and proud of what we both have achieved. Although many things fade, such as accolades, accomplishments, relationships, etc...family is a bond that is not broken and is the most powerful. I am also thankful to the many friends I do have that I can also call family. The ones I love to grow with and keep tackling what the world has to offer. Champ. He was my best friend for the past 11 years. He lived a full life surrounded by loved ones and filled our hearts with love on a daily basis. He was always by my side and comforted me from the highs and lows. From my crazy work and travel schedule, his presence when at home always brought me joy. I am forever grateful for everyone and anyone who pitched in to make his life amazing. He has so many aunts and uncles that took amazing care of him. I never thought I would learn so much from an animal or pet, but he taught me to love unconditionally and cherish those who surround and support you, and to never take life for granted. From the worst days to the days of celebration, he always just wanted to be around with people. To his final breath, he was still excited to see new and familiar faces. May was a crazy month, but it made me realize why I do what I do. From opening onepiececafeofficial with some friends, traveling, and working in multiple cities. Doing an AAPI shoot with seoultaco x stlcitysc x mls while connecting with amazing people and working on future and current projects with my friends has always been everything I aspire to be and build on. Reflecting on the month has made me proud and have a sense of accomplishment shared with amazing people I am constantly surrounded by. Without genuine relationships and family, the things we do are all for the short term. I kept this screen shot from 11 years ago as motivation. I had put everything I had into the business. Money, no credit, my car. My account had gone negative and I was working everyday. On weekends working 18hr days to make a few hundred dollars a day in sales. I remember waking up to this alert crying out of exhaustion and praying I would make it out. Soon enough sales picked up and I hired our first employee fechterj as demand picked up. Big reminder that our problems are never permanent and if you keep your mindset strong you can overcome any situation. Looking back that battle was so small but could have been insurmountable if I threw in the towel. I want to encourage anyone in a tough spot that hard work and perseverance pays off. Can't believe a year has passed so quickly. I think about how the world paused right as my Grandma was feeling ill. 2020 was a year no one on this day was pulling a April fools day prank due to the pandemic. We were all scared or antsy of what's to lie ahead. Maybe, it was a day we all needed to realize the frivolity of some of the days we label. But this was the day for me in particular that hit the reality button the hardest. That this year wasn't going to be a stay at home for 6 weeks and back to normal. This was a gut check moment of what can make my life purposefully and intentionally important. That's what my Grandma taught me, is to love people and make change for good. I hope to mimic those same characteristics that was evident in her life. I know part of her will always be with me and I am always thinking of how I have accomplished so much due to her being so selfless and loving to me and others. She is the Soul in Seoul Taco and her legacy will still live on through me and the fam as long as we live. I will always be missing you. Love you. In the early months of COVID-19, I started a PPE business with two close friends - phokingqui and robspetner.
