September's Sustainable Swap is focused on how to remember your reusable grocery bags. Personally I like to keep them in one of the most visible spots in our house - on our snowboard coat rack by our front door! I've also made it a habit to grab a few bags on my way out to the car, even if I'm not grocery shopping.

And if you do forget every once in a while? That is okay, just please remember to recycle the single-use plastic bags using store drop off as shown in one of my previous videos in the Sustainable Swap series.

Every small step counts, and reusable bags are a simple way to reduce waste and live more sustainably.

What is a sustainable swap you have made recently?

What excites me about being a SWE Life Member is all the fantastic fellow SWE members I have met over the years from around the world! The woman in the blue jacket in the first photo is actually the first woman to graduate Drexel with a degree in Civil Engineering and if it wasn't for SWE, I probably never would have had the chance to meet Alma.

SWE was a huge part of my collegiate career including serving as Drexel SWE president and it continues to provide opportunities for networking and professional development as well as traveling across the US for conferences. It event led to me being asked to be the featured student speaker for the Drexel College of Engineering on Drexel Accepted Students Day my Junior Year. As show in the last photo, I was sure to wear one of my Drexel SWE tshirts for that.

Soon after graduating college, I became a SWE Life Member which means I have access to SWE member benefits for life!

To become a Life Member, you must make a total donation of $2,000 (can be broken into smaller payments). If your company has the option, you can use your employer’s matching donation program towards your $2,000 commitment.

The cost of SWE Life Membership was an easy choice for me since I received more than that in direct scholarships from SWE during my collegiate education.

In the next few years with SWE, I am excited to continue to meet fellow SWE members both virtuallu and in person, and hopefully speak at another society level conference again soon!

What questions do you have about SWE membership?

August's Sustainable Swap focuses on the efforts the Rock en Seine concert made to reduce its carbon footprint. I attended this amazing concert last week and loved seeing all their sustainable initiatives!

To reduce waste, the festival used reusable and returnable cups as shown in this Reel. Similar to Japan’s lift passes that we covered in March, there was a 2 Euro incentive if you returned your cup to the designated booth within the concert. Similar systems were in place for wine pitchers and food containers. Additionally, there were numerous drinking water fountains throughout the festival that allowed attendees to refill their own reusable water bottles.

In addition to public transportation being right next to the concert, they offered secured and designated bicycle and scooter parking for attendees who wanted to travel to and from the concert on a more environmentally friendly mobility solution. New this year and in partnership with Hype taxis, the festival offered attendees the option of travelling to and from the site in zero-emission taxis which were either 100% electric or with hydrogen power.

In terms of green energy, LED masts with night-time programming and sensors were used throughout the festival, helping to reduce lighting-related energy consumption.

With over 180K attendees and 80+ artists across 5 stages, Rock en Seine's commitment to sustainability is truly commendable. The festival's dedication to minimizing its environmental impact while providing a unique experience for attendees is inspiring.

Thanks, Rock en Seine, for your efforts in making sustainability a priority!

One of my favorite parts of the news covering Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's engagement is that they are including that she is 35 years old. Happy Professional Engineer Day! This holiday, celebrated on the first Wednesday of August, is celebrating its tenth anniversary today. Professional Engineers play a vital role in ensuring the profession delivers safe, ethical, and skilled services to the public.

To commemorate this day, I'm sharing my journey to becoming a PE in Pennsylvania. Keep in mind that the steps might vary depending on your local licensing board.

Here's how I did it:

1. Passed the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) Exam - I completed this during my senior year of college.

2. Graduated with a four-year engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program - Note that if your program isn't accredited, you can work with NCEES staff to review your plan of study and hopefully get approved! As shown in the Reel, steps 1 and 2 can be done interchangeably.

3. Gained 4 years of qualifying engineering experience under a Licensed PE - In Pennsylvania, I had to track and document this experience and submit it as part of the next step.

4. Applied through PALS (Pennsylvania Licensing System) to take the PE (Principles and Practice of Engineering) Exam - This involved submitting an application with my experience documentation as well as information of 5 folks (some of which need to already be PE’s) who can sign off on your 4 years of experience.

5. Passed the PE Exam – I passed this exam a few years ago now, and want to remind you that I was a repeat test taker. No matter if it takes you 1 attempt or 10+ attempts, it is still the same two letters you earn. Being a great engineer isn't about being perfect; it's about perseverance and learning from setbacks.

As you can see, these steps boil down to three E's: Exams, Education, and Experience.

Got questions about the process? Leave a comment below!

Did you know that aluminum is infinitely recyclable? However, to recycle it curbside, you first need to collect a few pieces and roll them into a ball at least the size of a tennis ball or a diameter of at least 2.5 inches (the one shown in my video is much bigger). Once it is at least that big, you can put it in your curbside bin to be recycled!

July's Sustainable Swap was inspired by one of you as I received questions regarding one of my recent monthly sustainable swaps about cleaning and drying aluminum foil before recycling it.

Did you know that public transit is available in all 67 counties in Pennsylvania? Mass transit plays a vital role in connecting people to jobs, healthcare, education and more but unfortunately is currently at risk without crucial funding.

I rely on SEPTA to get to and from my office in Center City Philadelphia and without additional funding, the line I typically take will be completely eliminated starting January 2026.

Starting in a few days, the following cuts will be in place for SEPTA:

- 30+ Bus Routes eliminated with additional routes running at a reduced frequency
- Reduced frequency for all Metro (Subway), Trolleys, and Regional Rail lines

If still no additional funding, the following changes will be in place starting January 2026:

- 15+ additional Bus Routes eliminated
- 5 Regional Rail lines will be discontinued: Chestnut Hill West Line, Cynwyd Line, Paoli/Thorndale Line, Trenton Line, and Wilmington/Newark Line
- 9 PM curfew on all Metro and Regional Rail Services

And SEPTA is not alone - equivalent cuts across PA will continue if the Pennsylvania Senate does not pass a budget bill soon that includes funding mass transit. Recently, the Pennsylvania House for the fourth time passed Governor Shapiro’s (governorshapiro ) proposal that will inject an additional $292 million into mass transit agencies across the Commonwealth.

If you are a PA resident, I highly recommend that you contact your Pennsylvania State Senator to urge them to invest in public transportation as it supports providers in both urban and rural communities. I have included a link in my bio to resources on how to figure out who your Senators are and even a template email / call script you can use.

Happy International Women in Engineering Day (INWED)! INWED was created in 2014 by the Women's Engineering Society (WES) in the UK to raise awareness about the underrepresentation of women in engineering fields and to inspire more women to pursue engineering careers.

Today, I am especially grateful for the trailblazing women in engineering who came before me. They challenged the status quo and fought to make this industry more inclusive. I’m grateful for the progress we've made. However, there's still work to be done – women remain underrepresented in engineering, and that's why I continue to lead STEM outreach events to empower the next generation. While the path has been difficult, I am still glad that I chose to become an engineer!

To all my engineering students out there, I see you and am cheering you on! Graduating with an engineering degree will take you a lot of effort and most likely late nights and some people will underestimate you simply because of your gender. During these moments, lean on your support system as they want to help you succeed. In this post, I have added a few photos of some of the people in my incredible support system I found through SWE.

In celebration of this important holiday, I want to shout out some of my favorite organizations to help you learn more about STEM and Engineering:

I've been fortunate enough to attend several Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Conferences, starting with WE13 in Baltimore. These events offer incredible opportunities to network with women engineers worldwide since it now brings over 18,000 in-person attendees annually. Especially as a student, the Career Fair (that has over 300 different organizations annually) is also an excellent opportunity to look for an internship or your first full-time job. For undergraduate students, I highly recommend that you apply to attend the Collegiate Leadership Institute (CLI) as I really enjoyed that opportunity when I was a student and attended.

One of my favorite parts is the professional development as they have such great sessions about career development, allyship and more! As a licensed Professional Engineer, I am so glad that they also have a few that you can earn PDHs for attending.

Unfortunately, my WE25 Session was not selected for this year’s annual conference so there is a slim chance I will be in New Orleans this October, but I highly recommend that you attend this conference if you can!

While this Reel only covers Annual Conference, WE Locals through SWE have also been a great way to travel across the US for me (and hopefully one of these years I will get to go to one of the locations outside the US).

Fun Fact: SWE also has the dates and locations for all SWE Annual Conferences on their website all the way out to 2029 which will be in Atlanta, GA!

For May's Sustainable Swap, we are focusing on plant-based meals. Did you know that changing to one plant-based meal a day for a year can save almost 200,000 gallons of water? For context, that is the pollution equivalent to about 3,000 miles driven in your car (roughly LA to NYC).

While I am definitely not perfect with switching to primarily plant-based meals, one of my favorite recent additions is smoothies as shown in this Reel! Plus there are plenty of plant-based protein powders you can add to your smoothie!

Looking back on my engineering journey since 2017, I'm amazed at how different things are from what I expected. I thought my first job out of school would be where I stayed for most of my career, but I recently submitted my two weeks for a new opportunity in Project Management - a goal I've been working towards for years and comes with a salary increase to match the increase in responsibilities. A new job is exciting and a bit scary, but I'm ready for the challenge.

Since I just completed the prep for my last day, I want to share some tips:

1.Celebrate the change! Acknowledge the transition and take time to reflect on how you have grown and learned.
2. Make a personal to-do list beyond the company's tasks like an exit interview. Consider grabbing lunch with a colleague or pass on your expertise along on a program that is used frequently in your group like AutoTAB . Of course also make sure you transfer all your projects to other folks at the company before leaving!
3. Check all your benefits: use up FSA funds before your last day, change benefit email logins to personal emails where applicable like your 401k, and understand reimbursement limits (like the federal Commuter Transit/Qualified Parking Benefit Limit which is $325 per month in reimbursements for qualified transportation expenses for 2025.
4. On your last day, send a farewell email to your team (and anyone else you've worked closely with). I'd be happy to share a sample email if you're interested!

What would you add to this pre-last-day checklist?

To those considering making career moves, I'd say: build your skills, leverage your network, and confidently advocate for yourself. The right opportunity is out there!

April's Sustainable Swap is focused on reusable straws. I've personally switched to bringing my own stainless steel straw when I buy my morning coffee on days that I go into the office.

According to Colorado-based nonprofit Eco-Cycle's Be Straw Free Campaign, more than 500 million disposable plastic straws are used each day. Per year, that is enough to fill over 46,400 school buses!

Switching from single use straws to reusable straws can help with reducing the plastic going to landfills. Plus if you don't like how stainless steel tastes, you can put a silicone straw cover at the top like I do or use a straw made of glass or even bamboo! Compostable straws also exist, but they most likely need to be composted in a commerical composting facility.

Also as you can tell by my attire in the video, this was filmed much earlier in 2025 as I drink Dunkin iced coffee year round. Like the music choice alludes to, I am ready for the warmer weather that we are starting to have in Philly!

Have you checked out BODY WORLDS: Vital at The Franklin Institute yet?

I had the amazing opportunity to preview this amazing traveling exhibit before it opened to the public!

This groundbreaking exhibition includes real human bodies through the use of over 150 specimens and 20 full-body plastinates. Plastination, the process used to preserve all the bodies in this exhibit, was fascinating to learn about and how they were dynamically posed to show movement and anatomy was so cool to see up close. This innovative process of dissection and plastination on an entire body, pioneered by Dr. Gunther von Hagens, requires about 1,500 working hours and normally takes about one year to complete! As someone who plans to donate her body when I pass, I really enjoyed learning of another way folks have donated their body for the education of future generations.

My favorite part was the dance room! This room emphasized that dancing may increase serotonin levels in our bodies which can have positive effects on our cardiovascular system.

I highly recommend that you check this exhibit out while it is at The Franklin Institute!

March's Sustainable Swap is coming to you from Japan!

To encourage folks to return their plastic ski pass, you pay a 1000 yen (6.70 USD) deposit for the card. If you return the card upon departure like we did, the 1000 yen each will be refunded. This was at Hakuba Iwatake Mountain Resort. Have you seen this at any other ski resort?

I love how this helps them close the loop on these plastic ski tickets! At Hakuba Happo-one ski resort also in Japan, they use lifts tickets already made with recyclable material where you do not need to return them after use and you can also recharge and reuse them. If you do not plan to use them in the future, there are typically collection boxes at each ticket office at the bottom of each mountain.

Hopefully in the future they will combine these practices at each mountain together!

Using Something Borrowed Blooms was the best decision I made regarding vendors for our wedding! They are the official rent-and-return premium silk wedding flower provider serving over 1,000 couples a month, all while helping them save up to 70% compared to a traditional fresh florist. As someone who is always striving to be more sustainable, renting flowers was one of the great ways to incorporate eco-friendly elements into our wedding!

Using their online ordering process is simple: Browse their 20+ on-trend wedding flower collections in a variety of color palettes and styles. Then make your selections, add the items to your cart, and check out! Your order will be carefully packaged and shipped straight to your door 3 days before your event date. I used the Millie collection for my bridal bouquet and all the wearable flowers like my partner’s boutonniere and then the Olivia collection for all my bridesmaids bouquets.

After your event, pack your order in the boxes they came in and drop them off at your local FedEx using the pre-paid return labels they include in your order as shown in this Reel.

I absolutely love the fresh scent they had and that it filled our apartment main room a few days before our wedding! Since they come 3 days before your wedding date, it was also so nice to have this crossed off the list early and one less thing I needed to worry about the day-of unlike fresh flowers. I absolutely loved using Something Borrowed Blooms for my wedding and you should highly consider using them the next time you need flowers for an event.

February’s Sustainable Swap is focused on aluminum foil which, like our previous month, has a closed loop recycling system.

Aluminum foil is infinitely recyclable due to its unique properties and recycling process. Due to its durability, corrosion resistance, and ability to be melted and reformed multiple times, it can be recycled repeatedly without losing its quality. It is one of the highest-value materials you can recycle and can be reprocessed into new aluminum in just 60 days! Unfortunately, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that 2.7 million tons of aluminum was landfilled in 2018, so I wanted to focus this month on how to recycle this item.

Recycling aluminum foil is relatively easy as shown in this Reel. One of the most important steps before recycling is to scrape off any food particles or residue from the foil. In my case I did use a little water to do this, but not all the time will you need to wash it and let it dry. Also remove any attached non-foil materials like plastic, paper, or cardboard. Then take all your pieces and crumple all of it into one ball to make it easily separated from other products and to mitigate jamming recycling equipment.

While most recycling programs will accept aluminum cans (like soda cans) in curbside bins, they may not accept aluminum foil curbside because the risks of contamination. Remember to always check with your local recycling program or authorities for specific guidelines on recycling aluminum foil in your area before including this in your curbside recycling bin!

January's Sustainable Swap is focused on closed-loop recycling systems. By definition, this is the manufacturing process that leverages the recycling and reuse of post-consumer products to supply the material used to create a new version of the same product. In this type of system, products are intentionally designed in a way that both benefits the overall supply chain sustainably as well as economic feasibility. Typical examples of closed-loop recycling products include glass used for bottles, aluminum used for cans, and a very limited amount of plastics.

The example in this video is actually of plastics through Lush beauty as their closed-loop recycling system focuses on their iconic pots. These pots are made with #5 polypropylene (PP) clear and black plastic pots (with lids). Lush incentivizes this through either money off your next order or if you recycle five at a time with them like I did, you get a fresh face mask! Do make sure that you give pots a good scrub with soap and water and dry them before returning them to Lush. I chose Glen Cocoa fresh face mask because smells amazing and is super moisturizing since its main ingredients are almond butter, soothing rose oil, and conditioning violet leaf along with cocoa. Plus who doesn't love a good Mean Girls reference!

Do you have a favorite closed-loop recycling system?

Recap from the City Hall Creators Event with Councilmember Thomas!

Over 20 creators from the Greater Philadelphia area met this past Friday for an awesome event at the Philadelphia Art Museum! Max from Councilman Thomas’ team kicked off the event and went through the schedule and set the theme as 'Beyond the Stairs'. We then got a guided tour of the museum from our guide John (who I highly recommend asking for him next time you are there). My favorite piece was The Last Drop by Judith Leyster of Haarlem who was a Dutch 17th-century artist. There were only a few women artists at that time and she was the first woman to be given the title of 'master painter' by the painters' guild!

We then heard from Councilmember and Majority Whip Isaiah Thomas about his priorities for 2025 and beyond and then were able to ask him questions. We also heard from representatives from the Philadelphia Visitor Center and the Art Museum about their upcoming programs.

After the City Hall Creator event, the museum had their Friday Night Lounge, featuring art, live music, pop-up chef creations, and more at half-priced admission! I will be back to the museum soon to check out the exhibition 2025-01-23 22:00:47 Recap from the City Hal.. 40 -12% 14 +146%
While this is my take on a current trend, I don’t take being a licensed engineer lightly. I love being an engineer and making a difference in my community and getting my PE was an important part of my engineering journey.

Engineering licensure is crucial as it ensures public safety by verifying an engineer's expertise and knowledge in designing and developing safe and reliable structures, systems, and products. My license validates competence while also enhancing my credibility and trust among clients, employers, and the general public. Whether you are on the first attempt at the FE Exam or on your fifth try at the PE Exam, you got this as perseverance is key to passing these exams!

My PE license has opened up many doors for me, especially regarding my ultimate goal to become a program manager. Furthermore, engineering licensure encourages continuing education, helping engineers stay current with industry developments, advancements, and emerging technologies as I need a minimum of 12 PDH’s or Professional Development Hours annually in PA. Through these continuing education hours, I am demonstrating a commitment to ethics, quality, and professionalism.

What questions do you have for me about preparing for the FE or PE Exam or maintaining my PE license?
