How did you get into the Creator space?” It’s a question I get asked all the time. Here’s the story: Back in 2013, I got a call from a close friend and boss, briannpotter , asking if I wanted to do R&C for a show, but he couldn’t tell me what it was. Trusting Brian, I said yes — and it turned out to be the best decision of my professional life. The show was YouTube Nation, the brainchild of Jeffrey Katzenberg, DreamWorks Animation, and youtube . From what I remember, Jeffrey saw that incredible content was being uploaded daily but going undiscovered. He wanted to show the world YouTube wasn’t just low-quality UGC or a place for cat videos. (This is still a battle creators face — but Hollywood is finally starting to notice.) YouTube was (and is) a place where people make high-quality, professional-grade, longer-form content. They build communities and thrive. Jeffrey’s solution: a daily show that spotlighted hidden gems and put the full force of YouTube behind them. That show changed my life. The 40 or so people who worked on it made it magical. I’m still in touch with many of them today — and they’re doing incredible things. Looking back at the creators we featured is even more exciting. Some are still creating. Some now run large digital companies. Some — even if they’ve stopped uploading — helped shape the digital world all creators benefit from today. That show connected me to the industry: every major MCN, Lucasfilm, 20th Century Studios, Broadway Video, the ACLU, the TV Academy, the Oscars, The Atlantic, BBC, NYT, ESPN, the NBA, NFL, NHL, Olympics, Red Bull, VEVO, and more — not to mention artists and celebs who came on the show. The motto of YouTube Nation was simple: “We are here to celebrate the human spirit.” And that’s what we did — every single day. The show only lasted a year, but it was transformative. I’ve been searching for the sizzle reel for years — and found it yesterday. Do not underestimate the power of #creators . Time and again, they have been thought of as just “influencers.” Let me be clear: they are not. They are storytellers who can move mountains with their influence. One must create in order to influence. They will continue to be a louder and louder voice that reaches everyone, not just for brands but for elections.
