I live with cerebral palsy, and for me, that also means living with chronic pain. A lot of people don’t realize that the two often go hand in hand. From the outside, you might just see my tight muscles or the way I move, but what you can’t always see is the ache that lingers in my body every single day.
The pain shows up in different ways. Sometimes it’s a deep, dull soreness in my muscles, like they never get the chance to relax. Other times it’s sharp, shooting pain when my joints are pushed past their limits, just from doing something as ordinary as walking or reaching. Spasticity makes my muscles work overtime, and that constant tension takes its toll.
What makes chronic pain difficult isn’t just the physical sensation — it’s the exhaustion that comes with it. When pain never fully goes away, it wears on your patience, your mood, and your ability to focus on anything else. Some days, I have to choose between pushing through the discomfort to get things done, or listening to my body and resting, even if it means missing out.
People often assume cerebral palsy is just about movement, but for me, it’s also about managing pain. I’ve had to learn my limits, find routines that help, and advocate for myself when others can’t see what I’m dealing with. Medications, physical therapy, stretching, heat, and rest all play a part — but there’s no magic fix.
Even though the pain is a constant presence, it doesn’t define me. It reminds me that my body works differently, and yes, sometimes that feels unfair. But I’ve also learned resilience, patience, and a kind of strength I didn’t know I had. My pain is real, and so is my life beyond it]()
