![Honest things I wish I knew when I first started 👇
Cinematic means shallow depth of field
- you don’t always have to shoot wide open and cinematic can most easily be achieved through contrast.
Being afraid of the dark
- Contrast is a great visual storytelling technique. It’s probably the most important concept I learned to quickly achieve ‘cinematic’ visuals. Learn contrast ratios!
Light to illuminate the subject
- lighting to illuminate is part of it but as cinematographers, we are more than that. Learn to shape light, control shadows, and guide the viewers to where you want them to look.
Fix it in post
- the term I hated most. Coming from a photography background, I always liked minimal editing and getting things right in camera. Maturing is realizing how little editing you need to do to a great image.
You need the best camera and a crew
- you really don’t. While it’s good to have them, creating stunning images and telling stories only requires what you already have. Your imagination and any camera.
What I’m currently learning: Develop a strong taste. That’ll always outlast styles. Your taste will always be ahead of you and that’s okay. Keep consuming good content and you’ll grow.
